Maxfli U/4X

Recommended Posts

Just grabbed a couple of dozen Maxfli U/4x from GG. Couldn't pass up the price for $19.97. I had never played with them before but played a few holes last night. I generally liked the feel but they seemed to be a bit shorter off of the irons that the Srixon Z Star that I am used to. Driver distance was on par with the Z Star.

In defense of the ball it was about 45 degrees so it may have just been too cold for a higher compression ball. Anyone out there have a similar experience with this ball?

No difference in distance for me. A bit clicky off the putter but nothing that effects the performance. I love this ball and the U4.

You'll find a pretty long, recent thread that is very flattering of the U4/X. It's a great ball, and for $20/dozen, it's just about too good to be true.

Agree with this statement wholeheartedly. The U4x is a lot of ball for not much money.

I'm sure I am going to like them once I get them out on a decent weather day. Unfortunately, I think that Maxfli discontinued them and is replacing them with the U/6.

Genuinely awesome balls. The Maxfli guys I spoke to said the U4 and U4/x balls were modeled off the same idea as the ProV1 and ProV1x. In my opinion the U4 is softer than the ProV1. Definitely worth a shot.

I was wondering if anyone else was taking advantage of these being on clearance for 20 bucks, nice to see some love for the u4. I've played them on and off for a couple years now, and I've been stocking up this winter on them and will probably keep doing so until they're gone. Great ball for $30, and an absolute steal at $20.

Clearance? I've never seen them above $20. I agree. Great ball.

I gave a bunch to a friend of mine who does mini-tour stuff. He told me that he collected his first check in a while using the U/4. Other pros were asking him what the hell he was doing with a Maxfli. Apparently, cashing checks.

After playing several rounds with them I do really like them. I stocked up for this year so I guess I'll be playing them all year. Too bad they are discontinued.

I was told at a Dicks in the Dallas area that they aren't dropping the line, they're just rebranding it, and that a ball that is basically the U4x that we know will soon be available. To me it makes little sense to rebrand something that had a decent following (given the ball doesn't have a major tour pro playing it and is only available at two chains), but that's what I was told they're doing. I'd still scoop up whatever you can find now, because when the "new" one comes out I'm guessing it will MSRP for about $35/dozen.

As for the original OP's question, another WRX'er I used to play with said the same thing about finding this ball shorter than other brands. His loss was my gain as he sold the dozen to me for cheap.

I wander what brand they will choose. The other options are TF, Slazenger, Walter Hagen, Nickent; WH and Nickent wouldn't make sense. TF has a stigma for some, that they will never get over; I especially see this being a dumb move if they try and market a high end ball w/ the TF name on it. Although Slazenger was a player at one point, that was long ago, and what they are known for now is cheap 2 pc. balls. It seems to me DSG has three lines that all have cheap 2 pc. balls (TF, Maxfli, and Slazenger), and I'm willing to bet that some of the Maxfli and Slazenger balls are exactly the same w/ different silk screens on them. I think the TF dimple in dimple D2 ball differentiates itself enough from the Maxfli/Slazenger cheap balls to makes sense and keep. Personally I'd drop the Maxflix cheap 2 pc. balls from the line and keep those under the Slazenger, TF name and have the Maxfli name concentrate on the higher end side.

Picked up a box of U4's at Dicks today because I wanted a cheaper balls to lose in the many, many plugs we have up here this time of year. It turns out these balls perform like any premium ball until the approach shot in which they spun just a little less than my V1x.

If I had to compare this ball to another, it would be the Hex Chrome+

It did everything well enough for me to think I'm wasting money on $30 balls (Pro V1x PRACTICE)
Yes, this. I was wondering if I was the only one who knew about this secret. I played U4x's for last season after buying a box on a whim. If these balls had Titleist stamped on them everyone would game them no questions asked. Lucky for them if egos can be checked at the door they can basically play brand new ProV1x's for literally less than half the cost.
