Using a driver as a 3 wood, what shaft?

Recommended Posts

Quick background - With the courses I play, and with my game I RARELY use a 3 wood out of the rough or off the fairway. But I use it off the tee very frequently. I recently picked up a 12 degree 910D2 which I lofted up to 13.5 degrees.

I have a V2 shaft tipped for a driver and another tipped for a 3 wood. I put in the 3 wood shaft to see how I felt about that length/head combo, which I LOVE.

My question is this: Since I have a V2 tipped for a driver head, would I be better off putting in the driver tipped shaft and butt trimming it to the 3 wood length I like, or keeping the 3 wood tipped one in there?

My assumption is that since this 3 wood shaft is tipped for the weight of a 3 wood head, it's likely playing stiffer than it should for the driver head, but I am planning on going to V2s in my 4 wood and driver as well, so I don't care which way I go as the other will still have a home.

Your input is appreciated.

This is correct. If you don't find the need to add much head weight because of the shorter length, using the driver shaft will result in it playing more "true to flex". If you add a lot of weight to the head (10+ gm) or want it to play a bit firmer, then the FW trimming could be the better choice. However, since you already have both configurations, you can actually compare the two directly. Just choke up on the driver shaft to get the desired length.

Thanks for the insight. I find that choking up on a wood for some reason doesn't seem the same. Probably partly because you don't have that thicker butt end, but MUCH more likely user error. I think I may split the difference and put some lead tape on the head with the FW shafted head and compare. Thanks again, always good to have another voice than the one bouncing in my head.
