Walking vs Riding

Recommended Posts

Recently a playing partner and myself have begun walking instead of taking a riding cart just for the extra exercise. Our pace is fairly fast not by choice but we are both ready golfers and it is just our natural pace. (2 hours and 45 minutes to 3 hours and 30 minutes a round) We thoroughly expected that we would get lapped by many players in carts but our results were quite the contrary. We played a round in 3 hours and 45 minutes and we were able to maintain a two hole gap between ourselves and a group of three using carts.

I know pace of play is a big issue in golf these days. How do my fellow wrxers choice to play do you prefer walking or riding? How do you feel about the issue?

I prefer to walk, for the same reasons. I like the exercise. I also feel like I have a better rhythm when I walk as opposed to riding a cart up to a ball, just to wait for the next shot while the green clears. It's over all just a more enjoyable round to me. I played a 3 hour round the other day with another Walker and we pushed a riding twosome the whole way.

I agree walking made the experience a whole lot more enjoyable. I even felt like I played better golf. I felt more focused since I did not want to hit a bad shot and have to walk to it. Another bonus was that I could find my ball a lot easier since I could walk directly to it instead of having to go to my partners ball first and lose track of mine if it was in the rough.

I voted for ride, primarily because that is what the Mrs. prefers (we play a lot of golf together). If playing a round by myself, I typically walk. Also depends on the course. Even if riding, I typically do a fair amount of walking in the fairway and to the green. I agree 100% that walkers, playing ready golf can move along every bit as fast if not faster than riders. Each walks directly to their ball, no going to one ball location than across to the other.

I am all about pace of play and cognizant (sometimes to the detriment of concentrating on my game) about our groups speed relative to our position on the course. However, I do not play speed golf, I like to enjoy myself, it's not a track meet. Dependent on the length and degree of difficulty of the course, I try to play the round in 4 hours. I always let a fast moving group behind us move through IF there is room to do so. What I find irritating is when there is a group on my tail and the course is sufficently crowded so that there is no room to let them play through. They can see what is ahead of us, we are moving along at the given pace the day permits, and not the reason for their wait. Do not hit into us and act like we are your problem for your waiting. If one wants to play a fast round, pick a day and time that permits it.

I agree with you 100 percent about groups on crowded courses being rude. I hate feeling like I should rush only to wait on the next shot due to overcrowding of tee times. There is nothing more annoying than getting hit into to only get a phony apology when they pull up to there ball.

Walk, I think carts are for when you couldn't play if you had to walk (injuries/handicaps, terrible heat/humidity, extremely hilly course, bad course design with ridiculous walks between holes). Of course, if you knew the course was empty and you had an hour and a half to play a round, get the cart and hit the links.

To me, walking and the "slower pace" is a huge part of the golf experience. By slower pace I don't mean playing slowly, just the feeling of not being in a hurry, having a few seconds to listen to the birds, look at the scenery etc.

I think that just proves that it's not riding or walking that makes for slow or fast play. People who are fast will be whether they ride or walk. Slow players are going to be slow no matter how they get around the course.

As for us, our course is probably 90% riding except for the winter months when no carts are allowed. So I ride. Pace of play is very, very quick here, normal Wednesday men's day rounds will typically top out at 3:30. I think if a person was walking during these rounds while the rest of the group was riding he would have a difficult time staying in position.

There is nothing better than walking a course that is empty at dusk...very relaxing way to end a day. I only ride if I play with someone that insists on it. Otherwise I will choose walking every time hands down

Yesterday after work I walked 14 holes in a little under 2 hours and practiced chipping 4-5 balls on about every hole. No one was around me but you can easily keep pace of play walking. In fact I think it is sometimes easier as you head straight for your ball after hitting. Not driving to someone elses waiting for them to hit then driving to yours ect.

Yep. It's not exactly rocket science. It's a lot simpler than a lot of people make it out to be.

I used to caddy and walked at least 2-4 rounds looping and then at least another 2 while playing caddy/employee golf and was in really good shape.

Since stopping caddying, college, and working, I've put on way too much weight and NEED to get back to walking.

For me golf is a fun game when I'm walking. It's rather tedious and awkward in a cart. So I pretty much never ride except maybe once a year or so due to some sort of social obligation making it necessary.

It has to be someone I really, really, really enjoy spending 4+ hours with to be worth getting in a cart rather than going somewhere else to walk and play.

I prefer walking with a push/pull cart unless the course is very hilly. I find I play in less time because you can have a more "direct route" to your ball while walking. Unfortunately a lot of courses in my area require you to take a cart, especially on weekends which is the only time I really have to play.

Cram it with walnuts!

I'm working on a bumpersticker for some friends that says "Golf is a Walking Game." I have no problem with folks who can't walk (handicapped, etc.), but physically healthy folks in a cart? Why? Maybe it's just endemic to the US to take something that's part of the game and eliminate it. We're a fat and lazy bunch. I'd love to see courses switch to the rules Bandon Dunes has in place--if you don't have a note from your doctor, no cart for you. That's awesome, but probably wouldn't "grow the game."

I hate carts and only take them when there's no choice because the course doesn't allow walking or is more or less unwalkable. In the latter case, that's just bad course architecture.

Walking doesn't require a rush to beat guys in carts. As was observed, pace is as much a mindset as a it is ability to actually play. I've walked in under 4 hours and have a friend who can walk in 3:20, but he's moving and not pulling pins. Given the average pace of play, keeping up is no issue.

Never played all that well out of a cart. The tempo created by a cart is all wrong for golf.
Lots of places seem to require them. When the tee boxes are so far apart....

I really enjoy walking and will do so almost every time out. Occasionally, when playing a rather long or hilly course, I'll opt for the cart. I used to always carry my bag too, but I've started using a push cart recently when playing 18. My back feels a lot better at the end of a round since doing so. I'll still carry when playing 9 or at twilight rates.

I walk whenever I am able to. I like the pace of the game better, the exercise, being outdoors. I just notice it all more while walking. I feel a little hurried riding for some reason. Just feels foreign to me, like golf is meant to walk if you can. Devoted push cart user for many years. (Never liked to carry my bag, even as a kid used a two wheeler. Always walked though.)

The answer depends on circumstances. I am in the minority. I like to "play golf". My definition of "playing golf" is hitting shots and to play the hole. The more shots and the more holes the better. In a perfect world, I would play as many holes as possible. This requires an empty course and a golf cart, preferably a fast one.

I grew up in the country and now live at the base of some very beautiful mountains. While I enjoy the splendor of the golf course as much as the next player, I am not there to sniff the flowers and watch the squirrels mate. I have experienced enough nature for one lifetime.

Anyway, it depends on the situation. Obviously an empty golf course is pretty rare. Most of my buddies ride, due to time constraints and the discounts and deals available. Sometimes, given the course and the circumstances, we pull out the buggies and take a stroll. If everybody rides, I ride. If everybody walks, I walk.

I will agree with the above posters, slow players play slow regardless and fast players play fast regardless.

OK, I'll be the outlier. I like to ride. Where I play if
you ride you do a lot of walking anyway.

Frankly, I like the cart. I can stick my phone, drinks,
ice, etc. on there. It has sand on each side for
filling in divots. It's just convenient.

Some guys, I admit, take it too far and won't walk
to their balls. I have a Garmin watch. If my buddy
parks by his ball first, I'll grab a couple clubs and
walk over to mine and play ready golf.

If I have a 40 yard pitch shot, I'll grab a club and my
putter and head over while my buddy takes the cart
to the green.

We don't use a cart to avoid walking, we use it to
avoid carrying. We're old, the weather is tough and
we like our creature comforts!

"Carts improve the pace of play" is a myth, IMO. Our Saturday morning foursome will push a foursome in carts ... And our group is from 51 to 64. If it's cart path only why would anyone want to ride? It's so much easier to walk to the next shot with the right club.

As much as we like to walk, we played Fighting Joe in the Shoals 3 times last week. After the first round, we said Uncle. They obviously don't promote walking on the Trail with 200 to 400 yards between some of the holes.
