Sky Caddie or Pin Seeker

Recommended Posts

I had the skycaddie given to me for free but still bought the Pinseeker. I will never look back. In 18 years of golf it is by far the BEST golf investment I have ever made. I like that I can take it to EVERY course and not have to buy a subsription. Also I LOVE To hit balls on the range and I find the Pinseeker most useful there, as I hit at different ranges.

20ft? wow...they must have it mapped wrong. i play with guys who have pinseekers in skins and at most the diff is 2 to 4 yards. 3/4 of the time its 1 or 2 or spot on. The pinseekrs have probs with seeking the flag if it's up or down or obscures by trees or bush while the skycaddie, i can dial the flag position in just looking at the flag relative to the contour of the green.

the real minus with the skycaddie is that it needs a yearly subscription. i have the sg3 so i use the rechargeable AAs for it.

Also, you can move the flag position on the skycaddie to where the flag is and dial it in more accurately. So it's just not the front, middle and the green. Also the skycaddie has the bunkers and waters markers as well so you know what you need to carry etc. Very useful on a course you ain't never played before...

In KC's post, he mentioned 20". " means inches, ' means feet. I could be wrong and KC can correct me if I am.

Also, if the Skycaddie is off by 20 feet. Someone did a bad job of measuring the course.

Sorry for the confusion, I did mean 20 feet. It is not that things were not measured properly, just that GPS doesn't know where the pin is today. Please remember, I am now playing on the BIGGEST GREENS I have ever played. Courses with average size greens would never be off by that much. I am not putting down SkyCaddie at all, I think it's a wonderful tool, and the older and shakier I get, the more I am leaning towards adding one to my bag.

Doesn't the skycaddie have the intelligreen feature where you can move the pointer to the exact pin position? If it was off by 20 feet, that is nuts. I know there is a margin for error in GPS but that is crazy.

There are plus and minus to both, but just say (of course I never do this) hit in another fairway and you can't see the pin but you know you can carry the trees, what good is the pinseeker? Skycaddie tells me the yards regardless. Now some of you may be good enough to hit with in two or three yards, I am a 2 index and 10 yards yea I need that but two, I don't think so imho!

You guys are all misreading that post. He did not say that the SkyCaddie was off by 20'. He was trying to say that the flag can be up to 20ft off of the F/B/C yardages that the SkyCaddie gives you.

Same goes for the "center" and "front" readings as well. GPS devices only give you distance to the greens (and other targets) not to the pin. You still have to determine how much you want to compensate for pin placement, wind, elevation, etc...

Personally, if I played only one course that I knew very well, I think the Pinseeker might be the better choice. But if you play different courses, and want to know important info that the pinseeker cannot give you, a GPS is the only way to go.

Information that you can only get from a GPS:

How far to the end of the fairway?

How far to cut the dogleg?

How far to make it over that creek?

How far to layup before the water?

How far did I hit that drive?

How far did I hit that 7-iron?

How far is it to hit the front, back, and center of the green?

Often times, you may not want to aim right for the flag if it's a poor pin placement. Maybe the better shot is to aim for the big fat part of the green--the number the GPS will give you.

BTW--I own an iGolf Neo, and love it. My buddy got the SG2.5, and it's great too. There are many GPS units you can get that do all kinds of things, and not all of them need a subscription to operate like the SkyCaddie. Do some searching around the forum for more info.

It let's you move the pointer to where you GUESS the pin may be. If there were pin sheets every day I would imagine it would be right on... Again, I maybe should not have used that comparison in my post. I am playing on UNUSUALLY huge greens.

If you get a pin sheet you are ahead of the game. My club doesn't provide them.

The gym I go to is open 24 HRS a day, 7 days a week.

When do I go to the gym? Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, between 5 and 6 pm.

What's my point? While the hours of operation were a selling point for me when I joined the gym, it's a "feature" that I never use, and probably never will use.

Think about what you want and need in a rangefinder. The ability to travel the world and be able to measure yardages on any course on the planet is a great feature, but if you play the same handful of courses in your area, and only those courses, don't rule out a SkyCaddie.

As I said...you can dial the yardage to the pin exactly- If the pin is to the front and left, dial it up on the SG3 where the shape of the green is shown and you put the cross hair where the pin is, visually. That gives you exact yardage. It's just not the front, centre and back of the green that you get the yardage on the SG3 - maybe on the older SG1 and SG2 but the SG2.5 and onward it's fast...

At the end of the day, whatever works. I have money riding on my shots for the skins game and it works for me, better than some in the foursome cause I've taken their money.

All's good and it's a good discussion as well ;)
