Titleist 975D, 975J and 983K

Funny this thread came up today! My son broke his R11 Saturday so I threw in an old 975D that I had sitting in the basement for him to use yesterday. We both hit it a few times and wow! I had forgotten just how solid that head feels! It was easily 15 yds shorter than my 910 but they do feel amazingly solid! Good club!

Wow, five replies to a recently resurrected thread. Awesome.

Tried it out yesterday, and after hitting a few with my Hogan Persimmon 3W, I can state that the 975D did not feel like persimmon to me.

This being stated, it is a very nice muted head, and I really liked the trajectory of the ball. Driving is the least consistent part of my game, so even if I give up 10 yds, but stay in the short stuff, this may take up residence in the bag.

I have contemplated many times tossing a 983K or 975D in the bag as a 3-wood. Cut it down to 42" at 10.5*.

Be great for a shorter golf course that has par-5's reachable in two with irons. Have the driver forgiveness with the 3-wood distance.

I picked up a 975J a few weeks ago with the Proforce 75 gold to see if it would help me turn it over better. It seems to but I have noticed distance loss on mis-hits. I'm going to test it out officially this weekend and make a decision from there. I like how it feels but if I'm givingup too much distance over the R1 I'll go back.

Can someone comment on why modern ProV1's wouldn't work well with a 975D? I don't get it.

ProV1's are supposed to be low spinning off the driver, whereas the old Professionals spun a lot.

Is that the issue? the 975D would spin the ball too much? If so, couldn't that be counteracted by a lower loft? If so, the lower loft would potentially create too low of a trajectory. The low trajectory could be counteracted by a higher launch shaft or simply launching it higher with a small swing adjustment. Correct?

I'm still gaming a 9.5 983K with a UST V2 55S and absolutely love it! I don't think I will ever get a brand new driver unless the manufacturers start making smaller drivers (which may never happen)

The 983K with the NV 65 was an absolute bomber for me. I had it in the bag a lot time before I switched over to the 905R and them played it forever. Actually wish I still had both. Classic Titleist drivers!

im just getting back into the game after an 8 year break. have been using an old hibore given to me from my dad and have been spraying it everywhere. just brought an old 975D which i was using before i quit and it as good as the day i first had one. Could only find an 8.5 would have loved a 7.5 degree.

i cant get over how odd the big heads on the new drivers look. Like swing a stick with a balloon on the end of it.

This is an old thread but I have a very nice 7.5 975d, I switched to 8.5...$15...

Any significantly larger club head will give you more forgiveness, higher launch, and higher ball speeds. If you are considering playing one of these dinosaurs go with the 983K.

Old thread. Great point. That's what I love about my 975D, no high launch, etc. I hit the ball very high, put an X flex 8.5 in the bag, stunning results (for me).

Can I get some comparing/contrasting info on the three drivers listed above? I've read through the historical data on Tiitleist's website but was also looking to hear what you WRX'ers have to say about these clubs. I didn't list the 983E because it's only available in 8.5 or 9.5 loft and I really prefer a 10.5 loft.

The 975 ad 983 8.5* and 9.5* lofts , due to the relatively small head size, play like the 420 - 460 CC size head 10* and 10.5* lofts.

I have two 975D drivers, both are 8.5* loft. One has a steel shaft which I love to death. Would game it more often but the 8.5* loft is pretty demanding. Been looking out for a 11.5* and 12.5* to come up on the bay, but missed out a couple. This week I just won an "almost" new 10.5* for a great price.

Carried 16 clubs today when I played. The two extra? A steel shafted 975D and a PT15 (bore thru) 3-wood. Honestly, I didn't see much of a difference in yardage on comparable strikes. What I did see a differences of was where I could miss it on the face and still get the distance. Hot spots have gotten HUUUUUUUUUGE since I got my first 975D. Which also made me say to myself, "Wow...you must have been one hell of a ball striker back in the day, 'Cup!".

But yeah, on center strikes with my current (R11) and my retro (975D) driver, the distance was within 2-3 yards. My PT may have actually been longer than my current (SLDR) 3-wood. Again, forgiveness is another story. Miss that PT by a hair and it goes nowhere. It's hard to miss the SLDR.

Next experiment will be the R11, 975D, and 983K all head-to-head.

My Titleist Driver journey is a bit inverted which is what brought me to this thread. Here's my Story. I just returned to golf this year after a 10 year hiatus. Always loved Titleist drivers as a junior, but never owned one. So naturally my search began with the new TS driver (2019) Liked it immediately but found better value in buying a used 915 D2 ($149). I mean, after all it was still so much newer than anything I was playing. I couldn't get used to the HUGE club head (460cc) so traded down to a smaller, older 913 D3 - 440cc ($100) Well, after a few short months and golf lessons, my golf coach/instructor convinced me to find a driver with more loft. I traded down once again to the 910 D3. Love this driver completely, put in a Tour AD GT5-S. This driver is in my bag now. Today, I stopped by a yard sale with a titleist golf bag. In the bag was a 975j 7.5 degree with the UST Proforce purple and yellow shaft, 983k 8.5 degree with Graffalloy Prolite both original with stiff shafts and matching head covers. Also in the bag but less important to me, Taylormade 3 wood, Callaway Steelhead III and a PING Putter. All items including the bag filled with miscellaneous golf tees, balls, etc for only $20. Nostalgia tells me to reshaft, regrip and game the older titleist drivers. I'm just not sure which one. The smaller 975j or the 983k. I'm dying to take them out to the range but looking for experienced feedback from the golfers on this site. Any more info? 975J or 983k? I know I'll be jeopardizing forgiveness and even distance. Just love the older smaller drivers, I still game Mizuno MP-14's from 20 years ago (2-pw) despite the weaker lofts and putt with a Spaulding TP Mills blade. Thanks.

Hit a quick 9 holes today and brought the 905S. Outstanding club. Going right to the gamer bag. First hole 405yd par 4. Piped one up the gut leaving me 121yds in. 4th hole was my next try. Slight fade (my norm) 265 yds right side fairway. Similar results on my last 3 holes I hit it. No big misses and very confidence inspiring size & shape.

The 975J•VS and 983E are still some of the best drivers I've ever hit and one of my all time favorite club profiles. They may not be as esteemed as the 975D and 983K, but that's just fine with me. The best part of not hitting 460cc modern drivers worth a crap, is being able to pick these up for $30 a pop.683577919_IMG_20210301_1655090433.jpg.81c6fbc36d361d58255d69e60957c545.jpg1369638796_IMG_20210301_1654547092.jpg.284372df8d05f5045f65ac40ffb2e8f4.jpg958576132_IMG_20210301_1655427542.jpg.6998cbdc4fd6bda4512be414ec992f8b.jpg
