MadGolfer's WITB - Mp-4 UPDATE

Recommended Posts

UPDATE in post #142....AND #152

Previously, during the SNOWBANK edition...

Okay, guys. I have taken out the previous WITB pics with the Mp-59's and Mp 650's, so keep that in mind when you read through some of the responses below.

The unfortunate part of this update is that winter has finally hit up here in Maine, and rather than shovel off my back deck, I decided to update my WITB instead. Lighting is crappy inside, so I just jammed everything in the snow. I am in bag-building mode, too. Anything that didn't work well from last season is gone, and I kept only the pieces that behaved well and were reliable.

What you are seeing is my set of 4-gw JPX 825 Pro irons with my beloved Project X satin prototype 6.5's  . They have NDMC white grips with three layers of tape. Apart from that, they are bone stock in setup - Mizuno sets just fit me without a lot of bending one way or the other. I did a LOT of practicing last season and reclaimed a ton of my previously very good game. I actually have a different problem than some here - while I do have a reasonable amount of club speed, I also still need a little help hitting it higher. The PX and JPX seem to be a good match on that. The JPX 825 Pro's just looked right to me at address. I had the opportunity to pick up the 850's (or the 800's) at the same time, but the 825's looked better to my eye - a little sleeker. A bit longer heel to toe than Mp's for sure, and little bit chunkier overall. But, not overly so. They are kind of in-line with other "player model" irons from other OEM's, I think.

Once I had my PX installed in the Mizuno heads, I was completely taken aback at how long-hitting they were. In my first round with them I overflew two par 5 greens on the second shot. The first was about 185, so I pulled 6i and blasted it over the green by 10 yards. The second was a 180 yard approach and carried it over with a 7i (thinking I would come up short). I don't usually have much trouble with distance control, but these were just in a different league in terms of matching my swing.

I also picked up a set of Vokey SM5's in the very late part of the Fall. I have a 50 (not shown, the set-matching 825 Gw is more versatile, strangely), and 56 (F grind) and 60 (K grind). Only really hit them a few times - not sure that I am sold on them. I've usually been more of a Callaway wedge guy, and have moved away from them in the last few years (may need to go back). I will say the s400's and mid-size Z-Cord's are about as perfect in feel as you can get for a wedge. I have a couple of PX wedge shafts around, but I'm not sure they are as good (for me) as the s400's. The DG's are just excellent. If you play with a beefed up grip and haven't tried the mid-size Z-Cords, you really should. I feel like the normal .580/.600 Z's come out undersize, and the mid's really just feel like a normal grip with a few extra wraps.

You'll see also my 9 degree JPX EZ driver with Motore Speeder... "blah, blah, blah." Too many names for one shaft, geez...basically just a 60 gram, X-Stiff, mid/mid shaft that has been tipped 3/4's. It is set open, playing at 45.25, which is right at the upper limit for me in terms of length. Has a Golf Pride Plus 4 Blue grip on it with three wraps of tape underneath. Little strip of lead tape on the bottom too. The shaft was a pull from a JPX 850 driver. This thing plays like a slightly lower spinning G15, which is one of my other favorite drivers (in the 7.5 or 9 degree lofts anyway). I don't really give a crap about spin numbers, and honestly don't think this particular head would be classified as "low spin" (wank) anyway. But, the launch is mid/high, right where I want to see it, and it runs out enough, if conditions allow. Playing in softer conditions in Maine, you can't be hitting little dry-weather dirt-shooters and expect to get any real distance. Up here, you have to carry the ball down the fairway, because you aren't going to get a ton of rollout, no matter what you do. This setup gives me what I need, and I actually won a local, in-tournament, long drive contest with it late last summer. I forget what the distance was - lasered in the 320 range, or something.

That said, I do have a 12 degree SLDR 460 (white) head out to DriverWedge (the stealth-ninja driver build a GURU!), :ninja: and also just picked up a new KK black 60x to try with it. I've tried the higher lofted SLDR's and actually kind of liked them. They are completely ridiculous in premise and name (the movable weight does nothing), but the higher lofted ones still spin just enough to stay practical for me. The launch on them is kind of cool too, getting up in the air like they do and flattening out. I get why people liked them. If nothing else, the white head on the black and white KK shaft should look cool. Picked up a white Pure Pro grip to match with it too - anyone play those? Thoughts?

In the works also is going to be a Yonex eZone 380cc 9-degree driver with my old Flowerband Whiteboard 73x. I'm debating whether to send it to Continental Golf to get it pimped along with my Mp-650 fairways, but it is too cold to think of that now. More on that later once it gets warm.

Further down, you'll see old trusty White Ice #7 putter with the headcover on, trying to stay warm. There is an entire roll of lead tape on the bottom of it, and as a result actually sits up off the ground slightly. I chopped it down to 33 inches and put a SuperStroke FATSO grip on it. It is ugly as sin, and stupid to look at almost, but I can't get rid of it. I've made just a filthy amount of putts with it since I've owned it. It pisses me off too, because the back prongs won't even collect a ball off the ground - but, I can't get rid of it! It works that well.

However...

I did just order an Odyssey Metal X Milled #7, so...we'll see.

Okay, yes...I am missing some sticks in between driver and 4i. More on that in a regular post below. Maybe you guys can help me figure something out?

Sigs come and go. I have an experiment going with a J40 430 driver and 14 degree fairway. Not sure they will knock off the 650/Blueboard setup though.

Nice bag Mad.

Mizuno does make some very good, competitive woods. Biggest issues are that so few stores have them and they spend so little to market them, if at all. If they start getting more aggressive with their distributors they could definitely push the needle on woods.

I really want to admire your bag but admiration is the state
furthest from understanding. So maybe I'm misunderstanding
your bag and admiring it.

You and Sean both with Mizuno drivers. Are you trying to start
a trend? A friend of mine now has a Mizuno driver. What's
going on? :coolpics:
[/quote]

Sean and I have played together and we both have the same supplier/enabler.

No admiration necessary!

That is really what is pushing the public opinion about Mizuno overall. People think of them as an iron company. However, especially lately, the woods have come around big-time. The 650's are very long and low spin. Really excited to see what happens with the new "Luke" driver!

Agreed. I have serious doubts (meaning I don't believe it for a second) that LD would switch from the SLDR to the JPX850 unless it performed better. He doesn't need the money, but needs a win.

Well, why would he? Don't switch if something is working. I don't think he is the strongest driver of the ball out there anyway.

Totally not, but I see the comparison. I actually picked up the number 7 right when that geometry was available, and he didn't put it in play till later. I have played Mizuno forever. Just coincidence.

I phrased that entirely wrong lol. He wouldn't change drivers to Mizuno if they paid him more to use a club that doesn't perform as well as his previous driver. He needs a win, not an extra grand a week.

For anyone who likes TEE fairway woods, the same cup technology is available in the Mp Titaniums and the 650's. Lower spin than the TEE's too, at least the ones I have played.

Awesome looking bag Mad! The 650 woods are easily the most underrated woods I've hit. I had the 5 wood for a good amount of time and it's as good as it gets.

How do you like the wedges? Been thinking about a 54/60 combo myself. Just worried the sole on the 60 may be a little wide. I haven't seen them in person, is there some subtle heel relief that make it easier to open it up?

Thank you. These 650's are very "meaty" heads. Good weight, slightly firm feel, good ball speed. Easy to move around too. The driver head is very traditionally shaped, but has a medium deep face and is fairly low spin. Lofts appear very spot on.

Hi JJ. Looking forward to maybe meeting you and playing a round this summer with DW and Sean.

I like the wedges. Not a lot there in terms of grind (which don't typically like), but they get through the turf nicely. The leading edge is just a hair softer over the Mp-T11's, and they have a touch more bounce with a wider sole - all of which I need up here in Maine, as the ground is usually a little softer throughout the year, and I am a digger. The grooves are just great. They work, but don't disappear after a few hits, like you get with some of the Cleveland and Callaway offerings.

I wish I could say that these open up nicely, but they don't open in such a way that the leading edge also comes down. I have been playing mostly square shots with these. I need a wedge that will sit square if I sole it. Some of the previous Mizuno wedges fell open on me before (Mp-r12's for example), which messed with my accuracy if I was a little off. These, I just play square, but they are really precise in terms of distance control, and offer consistent spin.

For sure. I may be going up to that demo day DW is doing in June. Sounds like a good time and there isn't much for demo days in my area.

I know what you mean with the disappearing grooves. The shape of the T4's is 100% better looking to me than the current Cleveland's and Callaway's as well. I really like what Mizuno has done with optimizing the groove dimensions for the loft of the club. I guess that is the most important part to me along with the looks and feel. They really look great in your pics. I may just go with the 60.05 and bend it to 59 or 58 if I really need to kill the bounce. Thanks for the info.

I probably meant the disappearing milling too! These things spin just the right amount.
