REVIEW: Odyssey Versa Putter

Recommended Posts

Tested: Odyssey Versa #7 BWB 35" 1* loft, 1* upright w/ Superstroke 2.0 white/green

Pros:

Odyssey brought back the infamous White Hot insert which has been the insert of choice on Tour since its inception. Combine that with the new Versa alignment and you have one of the most accurate and best feeling putters on the market.

Cons:

The very thing that makes is so good might be the very thing that turns some off. Not everyone will like the paint scheme and some might want a milled steel face instead of an insert. Also some will want a high MOI offereing that's is not yet offered.

Bottom Line:

Odyssey decided with the help of their new CEO Chip Brewer that although the cost is 3x's higher then the previous inserts the White Hot needed to come back. The insert is extremely consistent and feels extremely solid. Speed control is impeccable and can make even the hardest of lag putts not so bad. The Versa paint scheme is simple yet impressive and quickly lets you know if your set up square to the target. Again simple yet highly effective.

The Review:

Looks:

The look at first glance is not impressive but not offensive either. It's kind of a head scratcher to be honest. But once I understood the meaning of the Versa paint scheme and actually set one down I was blown away. Now the Black with the white vertical line just screams class and drained putts. ALso it's important to note there are 4 different color schemes for the #7 model and I recommend you find a shop that has all of them to truly dial in what your eyes picks up the best.

Rating: 4/5 stars

Performance:

The Versa performs extremely well is every area. Again I can't say enough about the insert. The White Hot is truly the king of inserts as it feels extremely soft yet solid with amazing consistency. Distance control is the name of the game and the Versa does it very well. With the Versa tech the putter makes it extremely easy to tell whether or not your putter is open, closed, or square. I realized I tend to have the putter closed but I was able to correct leading to more made putts and MUCH better lag putts. I also love to see the white versa line on the backswing to insure I"m not sucking the putter to the inside. I see it out of the corner of my eye just enough to self correct. All in all it's another step forward in aligment technology.

Rating: 5/5 stars

Feel:

If you haven't guessed it by now I love the feel. Again the White Hot is a soft and responsive insert but not mushy. It also creates a great roll of the ball provided you get fit for the proper loft. Mine is 1* as I tend to flip at impact added 2*. Anyway where it really shines is consistency. There doesn't seem to be any "hot" spots on the face. The feel is the same across the face creating the distance control we all want.

Rating: 5/5 stars

Overall:

When it all said and done if your a fan of Odyssey's insert putters you will love the Versa. On the flip side if your someone who has trouble lining up the putter and hitting your lines, this might just be the missing link. I tend to see vertical lines better over the ball so the Versa has helped me with aiming correctly then making sure I'm square to the target. Combine that with the White Hot insert and you have a huge winner. So much so that the more and more tour players are using them every week and that includes a lot of non staffers. So in closing if you have not yet rolled one do yourself a favor and head to your local shop. They have just about every style of putter with the Versa paint scheme so I have no doubt you'll find your flavor.

I've been gaming my new Versa #7 for about 2 weeks now (3 rounds and hours on the practice green) - love it!!!

I agree with the review above - well done by the way, so I won't repeat what's been said.

Personally, before making the move to the Versa #7, I switched putters back and forth b/t SC GoLo and Odyssey Dart. To me, nothing rolls purer than SC's. With that said, I like the feel of the Odyssey better. For me, I putted better on slower greens with my SC and better on faster greens with my Odyssey. The Versa #7 thus far gives me the feeling of both. It just feels right at address.

Give it a try!
