Forgive me Titleist, for I have sinned!

In doubting that your PV1x is the best ball for my swing speed. I was fortunate enough to play golf this past Saturday with an former client, a retired aeronautical engineer/pilot. He is 61 with a driver swing speed of about 90 mph. I am 56 with a speed of about 93-95. I noticed he was exclusively playing with the PV1x. He is a 9 handicap and I am probably a 6-7 now,(was a 3.5 when playing regularly). His exact words to me, " don't believe all that crap about compression, the most important aspect for a ball is the dimple design , and how the ball is affected by the wind, lift, drag ,friction in other words, the aerodynamics of the ball". I got a short lesson in physics and wing aerodynamics during a couple of holes. He wanted to prove his point so he hit my new Wilson FG Tour and Callaway Supersoft a few holes to compare to his PV1x. I in turn did the same. Not once in 4 holes was the Wilson or Cally longer , for both of us!!!! I played 9 holes the next day and again, the PV1x was consistently longer. Now mind you, it was very windy here is S. Florida on both days! I am going to try to compare on a calm day.

I think the Pro V1 and Pro V1x are fantastic balls... i just prefer the feel of the Bridgestone B330 line and the Srixon Zstar Lines better... its a feel thing.. they are on par performance wise. but to me the Srixon is the better feel...

I think subconsciously you hit the Callaway and Wilson balls worse because you wanted the ProV1x to perform better. There are at least a thousand members here that will argue to the death that Callaway Hex aerodynamics are better than Titleist therefore disproving what one random engineer said. Im sorry... I dont buy it that Titleist is superior in the aerodynamic aspect of every single golf ball made.

Don't get me wrong. The Wilson is a very good ball and the Cally at $20 a dozen is hard to beat. I wanted the Cally to be much longer. I know that around the greens it will never match the Titleist, but I was quite surprised to see that the ProV1x was longer by at least 8-9 yards on average. I was just so cut up with just concentrating on the compression to match my swing speed that I failed to realize that compression is just a very small factor. I found a sleeve of older zstars and chromes. I am going to compare . I don't like losing a &4 ball in the lake!!!

Buy a sleeve of B330 RX and throw that model in the mix. My father plays that ball. He is very happy with it. It is designed for players around 90 MPH swing speed. According to him the bridgestone performs better with the driver for his swing speed than the pro v1 but gives him the same amount of spin around the greens.

Hahaha just playing a little devil's advocate.

In all seriousness I have noticed quite a difference in a Callaway's ability to fight off the wind. I played today with the Pro V1x and a Chrome+. The Chrome+ definitely cut through the wind better than the Pro V1x, but is it a game changer? Eh... For my game I'd rather play the ball that better suits my general game than play the ball that helps me in one certain scenario. If it requires clubbing up that's perfectly fine.

Truth is, USGA initial velocity testing is done at 100mph swing speed, and max distance testing at 120 mph. So there aren't going to be big distance differences between any conforming balls at these speeds. If the engineers could make any of these balls any longer, they would likely be non-conforming.

Now while they all should do about the same on these tests, there will be some small differences in how they get there. Different balls will have different spin and trajectory charateristics. Which is slightly better or worse for you will be an individual matter, dependent on your swing (since you aren't a swing robot). So unless another golfer is producing the same launch angle and ball spin, they may get different results.

Also, with a swing around 100 mph, yes dimple design and aerodymanics will still matter some, since this doesn't effect the initial velocity tests. But again, what dimple design is best will depend on your own swing, do you need more or less spin, trajetory, etc. And some will certainly perform differently in different conditions, such as wind.

But with today's balls, compression will only have much impact on distance when there are large mismatches. With swing speeds under 80 mph, a low compression ball may help with distance. I don't know why you thought this would be any benefit though for a 93-95 mph swing. Plenty of people with higher swing speeds still like the lower compression balls, but that's usually about "feel" more than distance. Which is also a very individual thing.

The Volvikk IV and the Nike Xi-x are both roughly 5 yards longer than the prov and v1x for me, and they all three spin the same for me.
[/quote]

The Volvik Vista iV is definitely longer than the Pro V1x for me but I prefer the spin of the V1x. Now the Volvik Vista iS and S3 are amazing balls which flat out perform with the top echelon of manufactures. I have been playing the iS and S3 for weeks and can't find a reason to even look at other balls. If you are not loving your Titleist you will have to give the Volvik Tour line a shot.
