How do I know which is best for me?
How does someone pick the right ball for them?

What questions should someone ask them self before picking a list of balls to try?

How would someone know that is the right ball for them?

I think that ppl place too much thought on this. 90% of players should go with a ball that feels good to them from 100 yards and in that will give good spin on short chips. The balls that reduce spin are mainly for players with a consistent hook or slice that could benefit for a Bridgstone E6. Most of our shots are around the green unless you are hitting 80% fairways and 80% GIR you need a ball that will check up around the greens which are your ProV's Bridgestone E5 or 330-s Taylor Made Blacks or Reds etc. I think that too many players play these rocks that really do not offer any more distance and perform like sheet from 100 and in.

look at

Bridgestone E5's or 330-s

ProV1 or 1X

TaylorMade Black

Srixon Zur-s or Zur-c

Callayway HX Hot Bite or HX TOUR x or IX

Tough call. Most high ball hitters are likely high spin as well. To get the flight down, most balls are on the harder side. Not softer side.

The Nike One Black comes to mind, as does the Ignite. Both are lower trajectory balls, but neither would be considered soft. Even the ProV1X is on the harder side.

I think you arein a slightly tough spot. Maybe a Bridgestone E5 or E6 would work.

Typically Spin, feel, and price are the main factors in determining a ball. Having a brand preference also helps. While brand preference is an 'arbitrary' decision, meaning there is rarely a REAL reason for it, it really can narrow your search pool. It may eliminate the "best" ball for you, but when I was looking for "THE BALL" I bought dozens upon dozens to try. Callaway, Nike, TM. I was all over the place.

Even now, if you are looking for a mid-tier/price with solid distance, and decent spin the choices are endless. Bridgestone E5 or E6, Titleist NXT, Nike Ignite, Callaway HX Hot or Hot Bite, Burner TP, Srixon...Wilson.....Precept. EVERYONE has balls for every player. Trying to find a ball is TOUGH. Any way you can weed them out, go for it.

as a 7 handicap though, your ball choice WILL affect your game. At least it should.

Play with some higher end balls and with some cheaper distance balls. Actually the Pro's should be playing the lower spin balls and the rest of us should use the Pro-V etc. Some balls in the middle are the E5/HX Hot Bite/ TM Burner TP/Titleist NXT Tour ......these balls spin well off of full swings and are close to the tour balls which like I said earlier tour balls should be used by us and the other balls used by them. In all honesty play a few round with a Pro-v and anything similar and you will save some strokes.

There is a web site called golf balls 101 and they have tons of info on balls. You can pick a ball based on you're needs and not by what people who don't know you think you should play. If you do the research on that site you will know all you need to know about different balls. Here's the link

the Nike Ignite DOES NOT spin, its a lot closer to a HX Hot then it is to NXT Tour/E5

I'm in the same position as you are. I'm a 9 and I don't really like shelling out $45 a box for the premium balls given that with a 95-100 mph driver I'm not going to compress a ProV1 type ball enough to get the performance I need

Right now I've been stocking up on Nike TA2 SPN's but I've got a coupon for a free ball fitting at Golf Galaxy, figure I'll give the E5, Trispeed, HX Bite, NXT Tour a try and perhaps try out some of the premium balls to see if they're worth it

Check out the Golf Magazine article which had detailed specs on dozens of balls, just in the last month or two. After reading the article, I decided my current niche should be mid-spin, softer cover, average or better distance, reasonable price. I then purchased 12/15 each of the Wilson 50, the Topflight D2 Feel, and the Noodle Plus. Now I'm spending time, using a different brand every few rounds to see what I like best.

Previously I was using a Precept Laddie which is lower compression but has a hard cover and is durable. But when you hit them, even with a putter, they go "click" and tend to jump off the wedges and putter which makes it harder to control distance i.e. poor "feel". The outside of the box says good feel but the article in Golf Magazine showed the specs and this ball had one of the hardest covers of any ball.

I have already found that my greenside chipping in particular is much more responsive to touch with any of the softer cover balls, and I am getting much closer to the hole. As far as I can tell, I have not lost distance.

Note that the three balls I am trying are still only mid spin and they are all still pretty cheap, relatively speaking. I just decided to go one step at a time, versus trying to jump all the way up to a high spin 3 piece ball.

I am a high ball hitter so I can assume I am a high spin hitter. I played the HX Hot last year and had no problems holding greens. At the practice range I compared the chipping spin the Hot had to the ProV1, ProV1x, Bridge330, HXTour.

I saw for my own eyes the differences on my greenside shots, and adjusted my targets accordingly.

I loved the trajectory the Hot gave me,...and they are only 25 a dozen.

You can try this site: it is a pay site with a discount coupon it is reasonable for a 1 year membership.

It has had good reviews as it asks about 15 questions based on what you prefer from a ball.

Only problem I found with it is it hasn't been updated recently with the new balls available and has balls that it recommends that are no longer being produced. I have emailed them about this and they have said the site should be updated shortly with the new balls.
