Big improvement in my tush line and downswing. More turn through and better lead with the right elbow from what I can see. Ball flight is getting better and better. And best of all I'm getting my fade back when I get it right which I'd much prefer. Very excited about this season now!

Amazing. Look at that ball go. Good work!!
Thanks, the difference in ball flight since I started working with Monte in May is night and day, so much more penetrating rather than a spinney high flight.
Nice job Dave. Very nice. Your Club Champ better get at it now.

Thanks. But I am the club champ :D

haha spot on sir, was 1 under par in a match for the club yesterday and didn't play particularly great but my misses are a lot better than they used to be which makes for easier up and downs.

I really feel like im on the right track and that a real low round is going to come soon.

Have sent my recent swings off to Monte to get his thoughts, think I need more rotation through the ball but will await to hear his professional opinion.

I really need to practice my pitching too. it was woeful yesterday.

Sent lesson 4 off to Monte and he said swing is looking good but arms are slightly stuck which is where I'm getting my flicky over draw with the longer stuff. I need to work on keeping my tilt in transition, and more rotation at impact. More rotation zeroing out the path which more tilt would move further right.

Instantly ball flight was higher and straight or fading. Not a hint of going left.

A 3/4 shot https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tR_DhR1Zu4&feature=youtube_gdata_player

And a fo and dtl https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yq3on00DabE&feature=youtube_gdata_player

Sorry not the best camera angles I know. To my untrained eyes it does look like I'm getting more rotation which is helping the head stay back. And also getting more extension. Obviously still needs work but encouraging step in the right direction. especially if I can rule out the left side of the course!

The old Tiger/Harmon drill. Watch it from 3:00+ on.

I'm actually doing this because I "Ole" too much and get stuck as well.

Great drill, you should tweet that vid to tiger....

It would be interesting to hear Monty's opinion on Butch.

Swing is looking great too. I like the second vid were you turn to the left and blast one.... Better then resetting the camera ;).

Thanks, haha yeah the camera doesn't show it but it was quite dark then and no one coming up the 9th hole so fired one over it into the trees the other side. saves fiddling with the camera :)

practiced Saturday and played Sunday (all be it in a slightly hungover state). where my arms had been getting stuck I'd really been struggling with my 3 wood, nothing but flicky hooks and bad contact, used it several times sunday and lovely ball flight again.

Hit some lovely shots too, nearly had a hole in one, literally on the edge of the hole, lovely flighted 8 iron 138 yards into the wind. Encouraging signs. Here are a couple of screenshots from practice Saturday, nice to see hands ahead at impact which they didn't use to be and much more extension through the ball which is a by-product from working on the bits from my latest lesson. Progress is being made :D

Old habits had been creeping back in of not getting my right hip deep enough in the backswing thus resulting in standing up and loss of tush line on the backswing.

Which makes the downswing that much harder.

Have setup a net in my garage for the winter months and so I can practice movements at home whenever I get any spare time. Using a bookcase here for a tush line drill and trying to get zipper away/right shoulder Down with head back still. Feels really open at impact but it obviously isn't but it's certainly better.

on the bright side my chipping and putting are superb at the minute

Really happy with how the backswing is looking, shoulders and hips on a steeper plane than they were and deep right hip. downswing needs work still as im not creating enough room and early extending with the hips.

however I have got rid of the hook I was fighting and am back to cutting the ball which is what I was looking for. a combination of better backswing, right shoulder out more and most importantly correcting my grip: the right hand had got a bit underneath and in a very strong position. was fine with irons very nice flight but hook central with 3 wood and driver. and I HATE a hook. So happy to be back hitting a fade.

Looking forward to playing both days this weekend and get to work trusting aiming left edge of fairways and greens and letting it cut back after a few months of aiming right and hoping.

and then need to get working on the downswing to add that consistency. my pitching which was a real weakness has now become a strength. with the strong RH grip I was really struggling and not even Montes technique could get it working well. Sort the grip and keep that right arm moving and VOILA! up and down 4/4 last weekend from pitches and 2 of which were over a bunker off a bare lie with hardly any green to work with. So the game is really starting to come together now. pitching fixed and the driving getting much better which were the 2 real weaknesses in my game.

Excellent stuff Dave, thanks for sharing.

Congratulations on the weight loss, really good going and you must feel better after 18 holes :)

1.8 is a very impressive H'cap for someone who only plays/practices once a week? You must be annoyingly naturally gifted ;).

Thanks very much, nearly 3 stone now, yeah legs feel much better after the round and the last few holes. My back hurts less too.

I guess some would say annoyingly gifted ha. I've always had very good hand eye ball coordination. Played county level table tennis and cricket in my early teens before golf took over. Hopefully this summer will be able to practice more and really get the hcap down

Played today and played very average but shot handicap at a new course. A few couple of bad course management decisions resulted in a couple of dropped shots which I expect playing a new course but driver was misbehaving again. Went to my club to practice after as have a match tomorrow morning and wanted to sort it.

Videoed driver swing and it was very long at the top with some arm run off and left arm bending a bit. My swing generally is fairly 3/4 by parallel standards but my driver was nearly going to parallel! Feel more 3/4 length and much more consistent so hopefully that'll transfer to the round tomorrow.

Looks great, congrats on the dropped poundage, I need to get busy doing the same. How have you lost so much? Whats your regimen? I hate when I get narrow at the top and my arms get a little long, just adds timing and extra movement that is not needed to hit it solid.

Thanks. I've been doing it a really basic way which has proven really easy. Basically I just fast twice a week. Not eating for 24 hours. So I won't eat from after dinner Sunday night til dinner Monday night. And the same Thursday. The diet is called eat stop eat by brad pilon. I need to do more exercise tho. I'll be swinging like Adam Scott in no time :D:lol:

Yeah letting the club get long and arms run and collapse a little was something that didn't even occur to me as I know I have a shortish swing and just assumed it was the same! More fool me! Certainly adds more timing in with the arms getting more stuck, not ideal!

Impact position in post #72 is going to be tough to beat -- love the tilt and quiet feet there.

Very tidy-looking golf swing, and MANY congratulations on the weight loss. Be sure to update this thread when you hold the course record. ;-)

Thanks very much. The face on impact does indeed look good its just the process of getting there consistently and it also doesn't show the lack of rotation and slight EE visible from a DTL perspective.

thanks for the support and hopefully I will be updating with a picture of that scorecard in the coming months :D

 • 3 weeks later...

Although ive been able to get it round the course of late ive still been struggling with the lefts with the longer stuff and decided to take an in-person lesson with a new instructor at my club who has GC2 launch monitor software. This is no slight on Monte's work I think the man is a genius and thank him for his help to get me where I am I just feel at the minute I need some in person lessons which living in the UK means no Monte visit.

My numbers weren't that bad just a quickly shutting face on a 2 degree in to out swing path which made it hard to time. Using this information in accordance with video he identified my hips were getting too vertical from a FO perspective with not enough turn and the weight was in the front of the left foot (which would coincide with no turn and vertical hips) and the reason I lose my tush line.

First thing we addressed was my setup as I was setting up too much in my heels which was causing me to rock back slightly and therefore encouraging the weight moving towards the toes on the downswing. So weight more on the balls of the feet. Then several feelings to get the lower body working better and a drill of swinging to the top, rehearsing that move a couple of times then the 3rd time hit the ball. After a few of these my numbers on the launch monitor improved and even distance was up a few yards (always a bonus).

This was all a week ago and have been working hard and practiced about 5 times since the lesson and am pleased with the progress in such a short time. The ball is fading again (YIPPEE!) and the miss is an over cut not a hook. Going to keep working on this for a few weeks then have another lesson to reassess and see how the changes look. In taking this video I notice my swing plane going back is getting vertical again but am going to stick with the drill and only focus on that for the next few weeks and not worry about other stuff.

Here are some old and new pics (Old is with the white windshirt), not a huge difference FO but more extension and hips more open but much better DTL, keeping my posture more and getting more open.

Well the changes are certainly translating to the course, am driving the ball much better and the misses are a lot more playable. I even shot -6 for 9 holes last week which was a new record for me, obviously that was one of those freak days where I just hit everything like a laser and made some putts. a month to go til club champs so feel its starting to come together at the right time. having another lesson tonight just to see how the changes have worked and where the swing is now, I personally think ive got to the point now where the feel and drill I had before is exaggerating the move too much and what feels a normal swing is the motion I felt before with the feel, which hopefully means its fairly ingrained now. will be good to see video and launch monitor of the evidence.

will post lesson info and any vids tomorrow.

Really good lesson, my numbers on launch monitor were much better and video shows im getting into better positions which is all good. swing is still a little in to out, around 0.5 to 1 degree, which is less than it was but still a fairly high closure rate which is where im still a bit flicky. so in the lesson we worked on getting my body rotating more going through and getting more into my left heel and trying to keep the connection of my hands with this rotation.

after a few drill shots I absolutely smoked one 0.5 degree out to in with a tiny little fade. BEAUTIFUL! the feeling from the top is I just rotate left fast and my hands are just passive with the turn which is a lovely feeling.

finished the lesson hitting a few 3 woods to see if it was translating to the longer clubs and the last one I hit was a small cut and finished with a dispersion of 0.0 yards. not a bad shot to finish the lesson on!

here are vids of DL & FO, 6 iron, and a FO 3 wood (here you can see more the not getting into left heel enough) these are at the start of the lesson before we worked on getting more around.

as I said in my last post club champs is 3 weeks from this weekend so im not going to overdo the swing work hitting a ton of balls just yet as I want this feel to still be fairly fresh in my mind.

we also noted that a long term goal would be to work on my backswing plane but that's an off season job and he didn't want me getting into that now. very excited about my golf at the minute :)
