MP 64 and JPX replacements

Recommended Posts

Just got done with a meeting with our Mizuno rep and he said we will be looking at replacements for the MP 64 and JPX 825 line this fall. Obviously we are all expecting the JPX 850 series as Luke Donald was toying with a prototype driver at the Players.

The surprising piece of information was the lack of an MP 59 replacement. He told me that The MP 54 was supposed to replace not only the MP 53 but the 59 as well. He may have been messing with me but I could see it as a possibility as the MP 4 in my opinion is one of the easiest to hit blades (musclebacks, whatever) ever and the 59 was surprisingly demanding in ball striking.

Weren't the jpx 825 replaced with the EZ and EZ forged line?
As far as my understanding and from what I was told by my rep no they weren't direct replacements. The EZ line folded into the JPX 8xx series line. So it would go JPX Pro, EZ Forged, JPX, and finally JPX EZ from most demanding to least demanding in ball striking.

Thanks for the clarification. Didn't know that.

I hope we'll see a (S)GI iron with classic looks - I am keeping my MX1000 only because I think the JPX and EZ series don't look classy at all...
I think the days of classic Mizuno looks in their GI and SGI lines are gone. No better proof of that than the Bright blue JPX driver. I think they will keep their MP line classic and simple with the bright polished finish and the JPX family will continue to get more "edgy" and "modern" (which I agree is very un-Mizuno and saddens me)

Do yourself a favor and go hit the MP-H4, they haven't lost the tradition. They just have the JPX line for the edgier big box store sales point.

No EZ is a new SGI line. I went to a fitting 2 weeks ago for the JPX-825 and MP-54 and checked out the EZ. The heads on the EZ's are significantly bigger than the 825.

Thanks. Looks three posts up lol.

I think the EZ look like the G series from ping.

I like the 825 pros. Played them for a year. Looking forward to see what they do to improve upon them. Hopefully it's not orange, blue and taken back a little.

Would love to see the direction they take with the 64 replacements. I'm a big fan of Mizuno irons, the 4s and 64 combo I have are amazing.

This year, I think there was a lot of confusion regarding which GI model/line was replacing what and conflicting communication from Mizuno, its reps and retailers didn't help. The MP-H4 irons were great but they all but disappeared or got lost with all of the other 2013 releases. The EZ line was great but how it fit within the 825 irons/woods/hybrids and 825 Pro irons was never clear. Hopefully Mizuno learned that no matter how great its woods or hybrids performed, consumers will not play unattractive colored clubs. Conservative looks usually trump. Don't get me wrong the EZ head design was beautiful. Vosh68 knows I'm a MIzuno loyalist. But the EZ Orochi black eye shafts and headcovers were hideous. Department of Correction orange. Just being honest. They need to understand that its core consumer base has an expectation on how its clubs should look. They have a winning formula, stick to it. Mizuno is about making the best quality equipment for people who play golf and take their game seriously. Leave the gimmicks and marketing BS to companies that release a new driver every 5 months and cater to the internet golfer community.

That's interesting that the MP-64's are being replaced.

I thought that they had been selling well in the LGS but perhaps not. If the replacement for them is hopefully "better" I'm listening !!!!
It's probably not a sales thing, just the fact that they wait two years generally to release replacements for lines that they intend on continuing. MP 64 came out about 2 years ago, so its time. Like you, I am real excited to see if they can improve on the 64s.

As well as the JPX 825s, those are 2 years old. Interested to see what they have in store to replace those.

We'll this was a tweet I received from Chris Voshall who's an R&D designer at mizuno:

@Vosh68: Here's what I'll say. I'm more excited about this year's launch than any in my time here!

This is a one hell'uva statement to make considering all that he's been involved with at Mizuno.

Looking forward to seeing what comes our way. Always loved Mizzy irons. And their iron fitting cart is second to none.

Yeah I would agree that they're probably hinting at their woods. It seems any hype they try and build with tweets like that are for their woods because they never sell as well as their irons. Hoping the revival of the MP line of woods is coming soon, I would gladly go back to full Mizuno staff if that were to happen.

Deck, two things. One, you have to understand Chris is an R&D guy who spends very little time on social media and can say very little about what he's working on. I actually had to drag this out of him. Two, I've been hearing the same level enthusiasm across the organization for a few months. But Mizuno for what its worth is still run like an old school sporting goods company and doesn't come out every 8-9 months claiming they've invented fire. Don't think they even have a social media person on staff. I think we've become so desensitized by all the hype over the last 5-6 years, we've forgotten to qualify the messenger first.
