Reshaft or Buy New

I'm new to this forum and I have read lots of great information here.

 

I currently am playing TM Tour Burner irons with the Rifle shaft(stiff) that I purchased many years ago. In talking with some of the local golf shops here is SE Michigan, they state that not a lot of changes have occurred in iron development. Most of the changes/progressions have occurred in woods.

 

My delima is whether to reshaft my current irons for a better shaft/feel/distance, or purchase new irons. Irons I'm hoping to hit in the near future are the MZ 32/60, Titleist 735 and the new 695. I have never been measured for clubs, and I don't know my swing speed. I can hit my 7 iron around 160 yds.

 

Has there been a tremendous amount of changes to irons since my last purchase, or am better off reshafting to a newer shaft?

For me, forget reshafting. Get new clubs. Have not hit the Titleist 735 or the 695 but i have hit the MP 32 and loved it, in waiting for the mp32 dgs300 to arrive. The DG S300 shaft works well with mp32. The 60's i have heard great reviews about them. But i recommend to try all the irons out there. As far as the equipment getting better, i think it is, especially the technology and the development of forged irons. Good luck.

msm210- Yes a lot has changed since you have bought your clubs. TaylorMade specifically, has made 2 generations of Oversized irons, 2 Generations of Low Trajectory irons, and have 2 generations of Center of Gravity Back irons or cgb for short. Not to mention several tour models. Plus the 200 and 300 class irons. Cosmetically, TaylorMade has dramatically improved it's look from the late 90's, by getting rid of the copper coloration centers. Today's irons are more pleasing to the eye.

 

In short, I'd retire the old and get new. You are gonna spend about $6.00/shaft plus pay to get them reshafted. It's not worth it. Today's technology is a ton better trust me.

correct.. it will be approx. 25-30 per head to reshaft..

definetely get anew set of irons.the reshaftin is goin to cost a fair bit anyway so you mite as well pay na few more dollars and get a new set of clubs while youre at it

In your situation, I think that it would make more sense to go with new irons. I feel that a lot has changed since your irons were new. One of my foursome finally took the plunge and bought new sticks after playing a set of 15 year old cavity backs. He always argued that the technology has not changed that much, but now all he can talk about is his new sticks. How much better they are etc...

Reshafting irons doesn't appear to be worth it, unless you can do it yourself, or the set is a newer release. I was looking at reshafting my TA6's to stiff shafts, and was quoted $35 dollars per iron. That was with your basic Golf Pride Tour Velvet grip. So, the total cost of $280 + tax didn't make sense to me to reshaft them. I've kept the set as a back up / travel set.

 

If nothing else, going through a fitting session would be good.

 

By the way, the MP60's are pretty sweat. If I had more iron game, they would be in my bag right now. Maybe in a year or two. :)

nothing has changed since the taylor made burner days??? if that isn't a misrepresentation i don't know what is. i guess the cut muscle design, forged cavity backs, lowered center of gravity, all those things were around back in the early 90's but no one really used it. sorry just my sarcastic side coming out. it's true that between one generation of irons the ones before it the differences might be really small and unnoticable but from what you are playing to what is available now is like beta vs. dvd's. your irons might work for you but their are so many more irons out right now that might just blow your mind. and the sets that you are talking about...mp32/60, 695 and 735's are all definately worth a shot, and if you need an opinion my vote would be for the mizunos.....jaw droppingly awesome

Good advice here. I can make a good amount of $ from reshafting irons but when I see a set like yours, I 98% of the time advise against it. Not worth the time and money....not when there's Wrx Classifieds and Ebay. Now if they were a prized set of FG17's or Eye 2's....then you might consider outlaying the money. Definitely not saying a reshaft won't improve on what you have but the big pictures says you won't pay a whole lot more for superior irons with a shaft that fits....alittle butt trimming, swingweighting, loft/lie...and you might be all set.

the other factor you have to add in is the hosel size of the TM shafts. I tried to reshaft a burner iron for a friend with a rifle shaft and found the TM shaft had a wider hosel size. Hence had to return to TM which cost almost $100 for a single shaft.

 

Buy new - you'll not regret it.

Thanks for all your feedback. I guess the initial question of whether to reshaft was I like these irons, and was told that I need possibly up to 1" longer shafts.

 

Also, I too was surprised when I was told there was not that much technology change to irons. If it were not snowing here today, I might head to a local golf megastore and hit some of these new irons.

 

Anyone playing the Bridgestone J33 Combo irons? These are also on my demo list.
