The first pic is the backbone of my bag, MacGregor 1025m ViP irons in 3-pw, Callaway Mac Daddy 52/58 wedges and Scotty Cameron California Del Mar putter. I also tote a Taylormade RBZ 10.5 bonded driver, Callaway X2 Hot Pro 15 three wood, & Titleist 909H 17 hybrid.

The second pic is a 1/250 Centennial Anniversary MacGregor Staff Bag in leather & fabric. The third is my collection of MacGregor persimmons. The fourth is a closer look at some of the woods.

Wow. Those persimmons are beautiful

Thank you, it was quite an adventure collecting them and then getting them refinished.

Man oh man great actual wood clubs. I used to have the Tommy Armour. Ever take any of them out for a spin?
Only the 1986 MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Super Eye O Matic that I have three of, it's a 945 head with a wider/diamond point insert. The drivers are amazing, with a good swing on a urethane ball it will go...but it takes practice. Different swing/different rhythym...no grip it and rip it. I tried it last week for the first time in a few years...very humbling.

No, not much. The trick is ball position, tee height (lower-much lower), swinging at about 60% to start. Then with practice you can work up to about 85% of your full speed swing. With a 100 mph swing, square strike, and today's balls it will go 270...I've seen that with my own eyes. Makes you really appreciate how good Jack was with the old balata ball.

Yes he certainly did...125 mph swing speed with a driver (42 3/4 inch, 9-10 degrees loft). Imagine what he could do with today's equipment if he were 25-35 years old and the same level of skill and committment? Everybody oohed and ahhed over Tiger's 260 yard 2 iron into the par five at Bayhill last year--and it was an impressive shot. But Jack hit an identical shot at the 1975 Masters on Sunday...a 248 yard one iron with the old balata ball (a MacGregor Tourney--one of the worst balls ever). Both shots were over water and roughly the same distance with nearly identical clubs...an iron that was 40.5 inches long (Jack's one iron 17*, Tiger's two iron 18*). The only difference being the ball...and what a massive difference there.

I have a set of the VIP 1025m's also. A great set of sticks!
I carried the heads around for over three years...bought them from a MacGregor employee when they cleaned out the tour van. The 4-pw are the tour version (no offset/deeper grooves) and the 3 iron is the commercial version. Pulled a set of DG S300 shafts out of some relatively new MP-67s and had them installed, plus I added sensicore inserts & black on black new decade multi-comp grips. Best irons I've ever hit...let some of my golf buds swat them and they light up like a Christmas tree!

Alright now!!!! Finally a WITB I can relate to.
Thanks...I know what you mean. sometimes the more hi-tech it gets, the less interesting it is. When I saw the Mizuno MP-4s for the first time I told the salesman I've seen these before...he says "they just came out!?" i told him they are an almost exact copy of MacGregor's Muirfield/VIP irons from the 80s/90s...dude had no idea what I was talking about. I just saw that Wilson Staff brought out a new 8802 and I ordered one...can't wait to get it. It'll be my go to putter for stupid fast greens.

What is the teardrop shaped wood in the picture that gives an overview of all the woods?
If you're referring to the rack picture, the one in the middle that looks like a polo mallet is a MacGregor Streamliner...bulit in the 1930s and USGA legal for about 15 minutes. The six woods in the closeup are: from bottom right, MacGregor Tommy Armour 945 Eye O Matic , MacGregor Tourney PT4W, MacGregor M85 Eye O Matic, MacGregor SS2W, MacGregor Jack Nicklaus Super Eye O Matic, MacGregor 67 ViP. The JN SEOMs were built in 1986 and the last really good persimmons MacGregor ever made.

Last week I taped the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf episode filmed at Sunningdale's New Course in 2000. A 60 year old Jack Nicklaus reached all four par 5s in two, to include the 562 yard par 5 on the back nine and shot 66. He also demonstrated he could still hit a 220 yard two iron, hitting that club/shot 3x during the round. As I watched I was remembering my round there last year, shooting a 77 off the whites...I was on cloud nine.

My next project...combining these into a 2-PW set that I can play as a spare or for nostalgia. I'll use the CB-92s in 2-6 and 7- PW in the ViP blades. Specs will be just about stock as Mac was alot like Mizuno, alittle flatter than everybody else. 20* two iron, 50* PW. DG S300s w/sensicore inserts and GP multi compound grips. I played the CB-92s for 10 years but the 2-6 are still in excellent condition; however, the 7-PW are worn quite a bit...thus the trade off. The ViPs blades are in excellent shape too so should equalize out pretty well. Once the work is done will be very interested to see how these perform with the latest urethane ball...like a Taylormade TP.

Have canned the above project...ordered a set of Cally Apex Pro 3-PW with Dynamic Gold Pro S300, +0.5 inches, 2* flat. Hopefully they arrive next month. I have decided I need a touch of forgiveness with a higher launching steel shaft, and I'll save the Mac 1025m ViPs for the summer.

Couple things. Always loved those irons ya got there! And boy are you right about the Macgregor Tourney ball back then. Was mush. I believe it had a liquid center although not positive.

I was lucky enough to see Nicklaus play back in beginning of 2002 when he was opening the Bears Best course in Vegas where I worked. . So he was 62 years old. He was there for exhibition to officially open the course. They had an old persimmon wood in the clubhouse on display (should still be there) that he teed off with on the first hole. He mentioned he was a little nervous about hitting it which cracked me up cause he's NICKLAUS darn it!! Anyway, he knocked it down the middle I'm guessing around 270. Very impressive since he probably hadn't hit persimmon in at least 10 years.

Next hole, Number 2 there playing the tips is a good par 5. Guessing about 540ish from the tips where he was playing from. He nailed drive there (back with his regular driver metal/titanium driver, don't know what kind exactly,, but it was up to date for 2002) then hit very high fairway wood onto green and it stopped dead. Keep in mind, this was brand new course with brand new very firm greens and the ball with fairway wood landed like wounded bumble bee.

Needless to say I was impressed! He still had IT even with whatever ailed him at the time. Think he had/has hip problem. Also I remember he cruised around that 7100 yard course in 2 under while giving commentary on a mobile PA system explaining the course design. Was a fun day.

Sky Sports has been showing the Shell's Wonderful World of Golf episode from 2000 where Nicklaus & Player tee'd it up at the Sunningdale New Course...Jack hit all three par fives in two, and was still hitting a 2 iron 225 yards, shot 66 to boot. The man's talent has no bounds.

Golfsmith has auto-cancelled the above order for the Callys...I think somebody is trying to tell me to stick with the Macs, that's the sixth order cancelled in the last six months. I think I'll just re-shaft them with either KBS TOUR V or Dynamic Gold Pro...have to do some testing first. The clubs are in excellent condition even though I've played them now for two years...keep castle bay covers on them, I hate seeing forged irons that look like road kill. However; I will get fitted for the new Taylormade Aeroburner driver when I get to Washington in February.

I got a chance to hit the Cally Apex Pro 6 iron and 3 iron with KBS Tour V recently...great sticks. I love that KBS Tour V! Gonna check out the Taylormade RSI TP and Cobra Fly Z+ Forged and then decide. I might look at the new Scotty Go Lo 3 too, but the Taylormade Aeroburner TP is a lock provided it performs as advertised.
