Getting new wedges should I spend the extra money to get the sm5 or save and get 4?
[/quote]

My SM4's still get the job done. My buddy has the new SM5s and they felt no different to me.

If you are looking for a different feel the TM Tour Preferred wedges feel "softer" in my opinion. I have the 52* and it feels much like my MB's.

SM5s best wedges I have ever hit. Get the right bounce/grind and they will be money!

This. Matching up the right bounce and grind combo has been a huge game changer for me. As far as spin and feel theres not much difference but I love the bounce/grind options.

I didn't like the SM4 and went back to the '09 Spin Milled. SM5 in my opinion is much better than either the SM4 or '09 SM. I like them so much I bought 46, 50, 54, 58.

The SM5 have a little more compact look then the SM4 (Big plus for me). People that are saying they get so much more spin with the 5 were probably playing with worn groves or suffering from placebo effect. I have a Hand Ground Vokey with SM4 groves and I don't see an appreciable difference. Another thing to consider is if your getting the tour chrome finish, the 4 has a dull grey finish and the 5 is pretty bright chrome. Both great wedges

No, not at all. Unless you want some speciality grind. The SM4's feature the M and S grind, so if that is what you want, get the SM4's. I personally like the SM4 because it has the same grooves in the 52 as it does in 56/60. The wedges stronger than 54 degrees in the sm5 do not have as deep of grooves as a 56/60 etc. My Titleist rep says this is because people do not want max spin in a gap wedge, but I personally want the same grooves in all my wedges. SM5 has a more compact head, but after hitting them all on a launch monitor, see very little difference in spin numbers.

Ya I'm getting the sm4 52.08, 56.11( has m grind) and 60.07( has s grind). Those are the grinds I wanted anyway and seeing that sm4 has them I'm not gonna spend the extra.

Thanks

I haven't really noticed any difference in feel and spin between models. Though, I'm a big fan of the K grind 60, which is not available in the SM4 range. As stated earlier, if you're looking at getting grind/bounce options that are available in both models, I personally would go with the SM4 and save some cash.

On a side note... As a fan of the rust/raw looking wedge, I'm a little disappointed that my raw black sm5s are not rusting as quickly as I thought. I have just over 50 rounds and some practice time on them, and the only parts of the wedge showing wear are the face and sole. The rest of the wedge looks good as new. The old oil can finish would have been raw by time you got to 20 rounds. Oh well, looks like a project for the winter.

I prefer the look of the SM5s personally, but there isn't much difference in performance other than more OTR grinds available on the SM5.

How often do you replace your wedges? If you are practicing seriously, and playing regularly, replacing sand/lob nearly every season is not crazy.

So when you start to notice the bite on chips isn't quite what it used to be, consider replacing. Keep the older club for sand practice, which will extend the life of the club in your bag.

No need to "switch," just replace. And yes the 5s offer some better options-- certainly more precise bounce choices, and I like the new black finish.
