What was the key to your best round?

Minimizing / eliminating blow-up holes. Which means not going for broke from trouble.
Scrambling - getting short game shots within 5-6 feet.
Making the putts inside 5-6 feet.

Trying to be as boring as I could be. Fairways and greens. I had a lot of confidence in my putting at the time and knew that if I just hit greens, I'd wiggle my share of birdies in while also minimizing my bogeys.

It was the most boring round of golf I've ever played, and when we added them up, it was pretty good.

The key to my best round (76) was swinging with ease. I was calm going into the round and did not try to force one shot. Every swing was just a steady back and through. It's amazing how hard doing that can be!!!

My best round (76) occurred while playing with good friends in December, when the "golf season" for club tournaments was over and I had very low expectations. I was hosting someone new to my club and trying to make sure they had a good time, and basically I played my best golf without thinking about or trying to play my best. I just hit the shots in front of me and it added up to a great round.

My best round was an 84 about 15 years ago. The biggest key was getting off of every tee, no penalty shots, and limiting 3 putts. At my handicap level my score is still based mostly on my drive which is where I lose most of my strokes.

My best round was a 78 a few months ago. Somehow, I found my perfect rhythm/tempo that day. I swung within myself off the tee. I made solid contact with my approach shots. My chipping and pitching seemed like it was in slow motion and my lag putting distance was spot-on. Ever since that day, however, I haven't been able to match that perfect rhythm/tempo. Golf is a frustratingly, funny game. When you think you've found the answer...you're quickly humbled the next time around!

I have had rounds in the 70's where I have missed only 1 GIR. Then again, I have had rounds in the 60's where I hit 12/18 or so. I believe there are 3 main keys in this order:

1) Proximity to the hole on approach. Your chances of birdie multiply exponentially the closer you hit it.

2) Your short game 100 yards and in, especially around the green.

3) Putting. If you can lag putt decently and make most of your putts within 6 feet, you're going to 3 putt far less.

This is true for me as well. When my iron play is on it flows into all other aspects of my game and just gives me tremendous confidence. After those great-ball striking days the common thread and key for me and what I always try to recreate is that feeling of calmness and staying relaxed, especially at impact.

My home course is relatively short, so if you're driving it well, most par 4''s are less than a full wedge. I had a day earlier this spring where my driver, wedges, and putter were all on, and I also made a few longer putts. I shot 74. My typical round is high 70's to low 80's.

Shot 72 yesterday. Had two sand saves and was putting well. I tried very hard to think only about shot shaping ... not about the score or swing mechanics.
