Set of irons at or under $200....?

So I've returned to golf after about a 15-year hiatus, wondering why I ever left the game in the first place (*cough* women *cough*) When I played regularly I shot mid-90's, just getting back I'm in the 110's but scores improving quickly.

My old clubs were passable copies of the '94 Big Berthas (Spectrum) and I liked them. They were easy to hit and didn't cost much. But they sat in a wet basement for too long, grips dry rotted, shafts rusted.

So I'm currently playing my Father In Law's copy irons (Turbo Power) and don't like them. Reduced distance AND lower loft. I hit them fairly straight, but mishits vibrate something awful and it takes a 6 iron to *just barely* get to 150 yards.

So I'm going to upgrade with some quality, older irons for under $200. I'm looking at Callaway X-14, Ping G2/G5 Callaway 2002 Big Berthas, Hawkeye's, etc. I'm open to other suggestions as well. I actually prefer the older late-90's / early-2000's clubs from an aesthetic standpoint, so buying used is actually my preference. I kinda PREFER a bag full of "old schools." My driver is a GBB II and I have a sack full of callaway warbird FW's. I actually WANT the clubs I coveted when I was in my early 20's.

Anybody have experience with these? Just curious about feedback.

I'll second the old Ping suggestion. Nice price point, built proof and can get bent to your specs for free (shipping blah blah). That and you can likely sell them for the same price you paid when you upgrade later.

What's In The Ping Moonlite:
Ping Rapture '14 13*
Ping Rapture DI 18*
Titleist 690.CB 4/6/8/PW
Vokey TVD 54*
Odyssey Tank V-Line

Thanks for the suggestion, jkim. I know it makes zero difference in terms of how you hit the ball, but having grown up in the mid-late 90's golf era, I can't get used to the way the newer clubs (like those cobras) look. They're like spaceships on a stick. I like the simpler look of Pings & Callaways. It just so happens that my budget suits me well to that era when golf clubs were a little more aesthetically pleasing.

There are plenty of guys in here that share your opinion when it comes to the looks of an iron. Welcome to the forum and good luck with your search.

I picked up a set of Adams xtd irons on eBay for $150. They will never win a beauty contest but they've been a nice improvement over my old irons.

If you like the older stuff I would go with Callaway Diablo forged, or ping g5 or i5. I like less offset, find it helps with proper alignment. But some like the look.

All the above can be had off the bay for that range. Plus lots of great reviews on all of them on this forum.

It's totally worth spending some money to get the club's fit to you and your swing though. It will make playing more fun and you won't be fighting the club as much.

Enjoy the journey my friend.

There are lots of clubs out there. My advice... Go with OPs suggestion. Ping Eye2s are as good as it gets and there are plenty for $150.00 to $200.00 in various places- Global Golf is very reputable. Even a set in "fair' condition can be refinished for $17.00 a club by Ping and they will look BRAND SPANKING NEW. f

You're gonna have to cruise your local craigslist and Offerup ads. I constantly see early Ping G series irons on both for well under $200, and those are all great clubs for your situation.

For old school irons I'd go Ping I5s or maybe even a set of Titleist DCIs. Those were some of my favorites back in the day.
