Golf Grip Size / # of wraps.. has it helped you?

Recommended Posts

I'm finding that as my swing speed gets faster and I get stronger, my hands are turning over faster without trying, and adding a little to that grip may help keep a straighter flight. I'm wondering what the best way is to figure out if I should or not? I can't just go changing grips for trial and error, too expensive. What do you all recommend?

I seem to recall Wishon, maybe, saying the conventional wisdom on how smaller vs. larger grips may work is actually the opposite way for some. I'm no pro, but I like a couple extra wraps under my right hand. That feels much more comfortable and I just want my grips to feel good in the hands and figure if I take a proper grip mission accomplished. Can't speak to using grip size to slow my hands down, interesting idea.. Maybe it's just a shaft issue as you've gotten stronger/more efficient?

I'm thinking it is probably more shaft related as well. I was paired up with an Aldila Tour Green X on an M1 head and my numbers were near perfect. Now I just have to make sure I can't replicate that with a Titleist head because my 910 D2 is still the best driver I have ever hit.

You may want to try out the Enlow Grips (www.enlowgrips.com).

A few years back I saw them at the PGA Merchandise Show. I have always preferred small grips on my clubs despite having big hands. But, the Enlow grips felt different and I thought there was some validity to them.

A few months ago I tried the JumboMax grips and couldn't hit them. Hit everything dead right and high.

But, I bought the Enlow grip and put it on my driver last week. I think it's amazing. I was surprised how straight the ball went and how much more forgiving the driver is.

I'm going to put one on my irons and see how that goes. But for now, this is staying on my driver

Much of grip fitting comes down to personal preference the problem is personal preference doesn't come without some experimentation. It took quite a few tries before I stumbled on to what feels best for me. I now install all my grips on an entirely parallel tape job. Meaning that I layer tape on until I have a .610 thickness through the entire grip. This give something similar to a Golf Pride MC4 but a smidgen over standard grip size. Good luck in your search, don't be afraid to try something that might seem really odd or out there, it just might work for you.

The larger a grip is the more it impedes roll over of your hands. I use 4 wraps under standard TV grips. My buddy easily loses shots left. It took 8 wraps to slow his roll.

I have seen consistently positive results when my students get fitted to the correct overall grip size first, and then in a non-tapered or nearly so grip second.

About 75% of my male students have hands that are too large for men's regular size.

Too small a grip diameter will actually decrease forearm roll during Release since you have to naturally hold on too tight to keep the handle from slipping in your hands - polar opposite of conventional wisdom. One of the advantages of non-taper too.

Of course if your grips are off the charts too big - that will also impede arm roll, but that is far less common.

That looks cool. I think I might give this grip a try.

At a minimum, midsize grips have helped with arthritis in my hands (and fingers, especially). I wear a men's large glove, and standard grips just require a little too much work from my fingers and forearms to stabilize the club through impact.

I played Jumbomax small and medium grips for nearly 9 months (a span that included the best run of my life), but a prolonged stretch of sh*tty ball striking saw me switch back down to midsize grips in March. I've been hitting the ball well since then, averaging in the upper 70s with 9 GIR (over 28 rounds). My handicap is down from 7.5 to 2.7 over that same time frame.

The bottom line is that with midsize grips, my sidespin is FAR less (and more predictable), my misses are more consistent, and I feel like I have better control of the club head (which includes not re-gripping at the top of the backswing because I'm able to hold the grip securely).

If it weren't for the fact that interlocking becomes uncomfortable at larger grip sizes, I'd probably try to go larger. As it is, midsize seems to be just about perfect for the way I like to hold the club.

I got a regular golf pride mc4 grip which is like 4 tape bigger in the lower handle. I then add 2 layer of tape. I don't see massive improvement in performance or it stops my over draw, but it's "feels" more control.

I tend to grip the club very tight and my glove dies out in 3-4 range sessions.

With the bigger grip, it changed on my grip pressure.

It's all personal preference. I recommend putting a midsize grip on an old club and taking it to the range to see if you like it. I have varying different grip sizes depending on the club, my irons are just midsized but my wedges, and woods are midsized with 3 extra wraps under them. I like a bigger grip on my wedges because it eases tension and on my woods it helps smooth out my hands. Like I said its all personal preference and I recommend trying it out on an old club before putting it on your gamer set.

If you have access to an air compressor you can easily put grips on and take them off yourself. There are YouTube videos that show how to do it. You put the grip on right over masking tape or the shaft itself. No solvent or double-sided tape is needed so you can reuse the grips. This allows you to experiment with adding masking tape to build up the grips until you're happy with the results.

I definitely found a little something when I went to larger grips with no taper

Just a word of caution to all. I played with Jumbo to mid and now back to standard and gained back all kinds of swing speed and control going back to stock. Can't remember why I thought I needed special grips that are not off the rack in the first place. Unless you have big hands... I mean really big mutts.

Just regrip one club an extra wrap at a time until you find the thickness that you like
