If I'm Spieth I am seriously considering leaving the driver in the locker room and throwing an extra wedge in the bag at Oakmont.

He drove the ball pretty solid this past week. Oddly, some of his squirrelliest tee shots came from the 3 wood.

A bag of left-handed junk.

Spieth is 12th in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green. Most all of the guys ahead of him in that ranking are bombers off the tee and earn their rank with the extra distance. Spieth does it with game management and by being more aggressive at the right times. He may not have the prettiest classic swing, but it sure is effective. I'm sure he has no intention of changing it.

Yes - he is an excellent course manager with excellent scrambling skills - reminds me a little of Seve.

I can see where you're coming from but neither player was SHORT hitting in their respective eras. .....Jack was/is the greatest course manager. ...yet he was amongst the longest. The stigma attached to the title of "course manager" stings as much as an NFL qb labeled a "game manager"

It defines a player who doesn't have the physical gifts that superstar qb's display.....in golf a "course manager" supposedly can't "overpower" a golf course.

But when you can putt like Nicklaus, Woods,Seve or YJS ....you don't need to take yourself out of a hole.....just find the green somehow. .....conservative strategy doesn't mean these don't have "bomber distance" it just means they choose to use it wisely.....

Pavin,Funk, Donald are short hitters

By "course management" I mean understanding and adopting a strategy involved in any particular hole - what side of the fairway to drive the ball, where to leave approach shots, putts etc. Nicklaus and Woods were great at it - when Woods didn't hit a single bunker at St. Andrews in 2000, he displayed superb course management. I think of it of one of Spieth's greatest skills.

Totally agree and as I said these guys would out-think you most of the time than try and chase low scores with pure brute.

Managing ones game is a vastly overlooked and underappreciated component to a players arsenal. A conservative strategy; cocky swing approach. Staying in play to control your ball.....but when in trouble not compounding it by trying to high risk high reward shot too often!

Saw the recorded version at the morning coffee. KIND OF DISGUSTING with A GUY WITH A - for a PGA tour pro - SLOPPY SWING just holing it out from everywhere. THE GUY HAS SERIOUS SWING FLAWS and still wins tournaments.

Yep, I was so disgusted that I wanted to vomit, LMAO.

This kid has had basically the same swing since he was a child and definitely since he was 15-16yo and laid a major can of Wup A** on every Am that he faced from our shores to yours.

He simply picked up as Pro where he left off as an Am~

Absolutely. Every guy on here would trade places if they could. Plenty of guys ON TOUR would swap with him , so the idea he has an ugly swing is certainly in the eyes of the beholder. I personally think it looks like $$ cash money ! Which I've always loved the look of !

Richard, isn't this site grand? :swoon:

By the same token, Trevino, Floyd, and few other greats had "ugly" swings but they did it the same way every time. Moe Norman often said the golf swing that counted was only four feet long: two feet before and after impact. If you were consistently great there, everything else was just fluff and aesthetics. When you add in a magic putting touch, you become a dream killer.

I once heard an instructor say: "If you want to see the best golfers in the world, watch the PGA Tour. If you want to see the best golf swings in the world, watch the Nationwide Tour."

I think there is a lot of truth to that. A perfect swing only gets you so far. The things that make a golfer great are owing your swing, repeating it and finding a way to get the ball in the hole in fewer shots than anyone else.

Excellent comments Mike and I couldn't agree more with the Instructor!!

To me, and I know that I'm a little different, however the "perfect" swing is whatever swing allows a Player to emerge victorious, regardless of the level or event.

It really is a collection & montage of swings, some gorgeous to some that are downright dog s***, from driver to lob wedge, from a nutted bomb off the tee to a blocked 4i into the 2nd cut.

It's the swing that you have when you're making your move and throwing darts at pins and the swing that you have when you start to go sideways on the back.

But more than anything, to me, the "Perfect Swing" is the swing that a Player puts on the ball under the pressures of tournament Play, from the first tee to the last approach.

It's the swing that stands up to the golf course, stands up to the competition and stands up to pressures of the moment.

If you go to a tourney practice line on a Wednesday afternoon, and ya walk the line, you will see some amazing, gorgeous swings.

One after the other, after the other, after the other after..............

You get me point, lol

Yet with all of these amazing gorgeous swings, roughly half will be slammin the trunks come Friday evening.

Pressure has a way of f***** with perfection.

Besides, it's not just a cliche.......

No one is perfect

Nor do they have to be-

They just have to be consistently lower than everyone else-

That's been Jordan since he was 15-16yo.

He's the Master of that 5.5" track between his ears-

He's not perfect, as Augusta shows, however when he's on, he's damn close-

Have a nice day Gens :)

I suspect Jordan is smart enough not to listen to the peanut gallery experts on golf swing theory. He's heard all the criticism a hundred times, and keeps laughing all the way to the bank.

I'd love to have serious flaws in my golf swing that would result in the following:

2015 Masters - Win

2015 US Open - Win

2015 Open - T4

2015 PGA - 2nd

2016 Masters - 2nd (would have won easily but for one lousy short iron.)

2 other PGA Tour wins

99% of tour pros would kill for this record......

Young Spieth really has to get a swing to match that short game. I wish someone could jinx some yips on him, A woodoo doctor maybe. That should maybe get his swing going.

[...]

Why? He is winning. If he is smart, he wont do a thing but practice the swing he's got...

Agreed. Also Spieth is not a short hitter. While not Bubba long he hits it pretty far when needed, he hits his irons and FW's about as long as anyone. I think playing a controlled fade off the tee in the 290 range is part of his course management.

Check out the drive he hit on #13 at the Masters after his disaster on #12, he put a can of whoop azz on that thing.

Yes Tiger was an erratic driver of the ball but a great course manager, in his prime.

And if you really want to see a pretty golf swing, watch a PGA club professional. Tournament golf is strictly survival of fittest and the fittest are those that get the ball in the hole in the fewest strokes. There are no style points.
