Color Matching Rant

Recommended Posts

I'm going to go a little Dennis Miller here, so bear with me.

Something that has been bothering me lately is matching shirt colors to pants/shorts. For example, I just got a couple of FootJoy shirts with some gift cards from a tournament (this was one of them: http://www.footjoy.com/lisle-chest-stripe-knit-collar/132PDS.html?dwvar_132PDS_color=20360) and I'm having trouble finding shorts that match the secondary color in the shirt. I think a pair of green shorts that match the green in the shirt would look nice, but I can't find them anywhere. Is it too much to ask for a company to make many different short/pant colors available so that it's easier to match clothing? I know I could always find a pair of green shorts from another company, but Footjoy's green is not quite the same as Puma's green or Nike's green, and I just don't think it looks right if the matching colors aren't the same shade.

Ok. Rant over now.

That's what white shorts are for. :-)

+1

White pants or shorts would be the only way to go with that shirt.

Personally, I'm not a fan of wearing white bottoms, so I probably would've gone with the royal blue or white shirt in the first place.

I think Dennis Miller would be embarrassed to have his name associated with this rant.

I personally think it looks dumb when everything matches perfectly. It looks like you just went out and bought a pre-arranged outfit to wear for the day. Sometimes you have to mismatch tones or blend the color in somewhere else.

Think of a suit - a pocket square isn't meant to match a tie or suit perfectly but compliment everything else.

OP -- I don't think you're crazy for wanting your shirts and shorts to match... But I think your rant is a little misdirected. Companies like Sligo make shorts and shirts that carry the same colors over from one to another, as do Nike and Adidas and many others. I've also found many Nike shorts colors that go with the colors in Sligo shirts. Maybe you were pigeonholed into buying FJ shirts with that gift card, but I probably wouldn't have bought that shirt to begin with unless I wasn't trying to match that green to the same green. It probably makes more sense to buy a shirt knowing that you already have shorts to wear with it.

Otherwise, what do you propose? A council that assembles to agree upon one shade of various colors to be used by all clothing manufacturers for that year?

If FJ doesn't make shorts in that color green, and you insist upon that color green, then sounds like FJ and that shirt aren't the way to go.

Khaki, light grey and dark grey match that shirt as well.

if i were the OP i would prefer a matching green shorts or pants, but thats just me. As others stated, white is usually a good color with about anything.

Some people care more than others about golf fashion, i prefer to look nice even if i play bad, so come out of your hole, to hell with the smarties chiming in

Nothing crazy about wanting to match. Obviously, colors and fabrics are going to come and go, but in any given apparel release, it's not unreasonable to expect the individual pieces to fit together nicely.

The only caveat is sometimes I will dress myself for work and realize I'm wearing Tommy pants, a Tommy shirt, and Tommy socks. I then have to swap one of the pieces out for a different brand. Just feels weird wearing everything from one brand.

OP - Light grey, dark grey, a light khaki or a taupe, (which is a mixture of grey and brown and is a very neutral colour - this would be my first choice - taupe looks good with the green in the shirt) if you do not like white. To me green is a little much and would be hard to find another shirt which would go with the green pants, as it is a specific green.

Nothing crazy about such thoughts in a "Style" forum discussion!

I'm old school, older aged and (slightly) oversized so white pants are tricky for me -- definitely not under 32 years of age or 32 waistline (or whatever that saying is).

I go with the old "gray and tan go with everything except each other" for shirts like that one...

I also always heard that men coordinate and women match, so if the shirt is dark, the pants are light and if the shirt is light the pants are dark (navy blue instead of black) for me.

Bonus...a pet peeve or two: folks who "could care less" (instead of the correct "couldn't care less"), especially when applied to someone's thoughts on clothes in a STYLE forum. To me, it's the one place you should be able to express any opinion you want or have about clothes and what not without fear of the dreaded "you shouldn't care what so-and-so wears / what does it matter what they are wearing / etc.". Seems to me the name of the forum is a dead giveaway to what you are likely to be reading about once inside... ;)

White trousers would be a nice match with this shirt. Or maybe navy with a green belt, or would this be too much? You could also add some Myjoys in navy, white and green, plus a white hat.

Until recently I did not pay a lot of attention to my look on the course, but the more I read this forum, the more I try to buy matching outfits. The next step will be the purchase of two or three pairs of Myjoy Icons, as I am sick of wearing white shoes....

I agree with OP. One of my biggest complaints with Nike is their need to create new colors all the time. I know it's simply to force consumers to have to buy more product, but why make it so hard on us? I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to style, but even still there can be midnight navy, college navy, obsidian...gym red, university red, crimson. it makes it extremely hard to put together a wardrobe if you like to match and have a limited budget.
