My indoor "putting green" project

Joneser - I built my own putting green based off of your thread here and even used the Camry trunk liner (same ebay seller). Mine is 4'x just under 12' as I didn't take into account the actual size of the 2x4 when doing my engineering. In any case, how is your liner holding up? While my overall craftsmanship isn't the greatest (you can see the joint where I had to mate the 4'x8' and 4'x4' plywood and has now progressively become uneven where it was previously pretty darn close), the felt seems to wad up like a hairball quite a bit. Have you had this issue as well and have you figured out a fix for it? Between that and the fact that it's a pain to vacuum anything out of it (mine is my detached garage that gets a lot of dust/debris on it, I almost wish I went with an artificial turf. The ball rolls smooth and fast though on it.

Mine is holding up perfect. The MDF was screwed and glued in many places so it isnt going anywhere. I also don't have any seems so that is another bonus. I have not had any issues with the carpet but I dont run a vacuum over it or anything like that. My son has used it to sit on while playing video games and we have not seen any changes in the surface. I do wear shoes on it too so its certainly not like its babied. The only regret I have is how heavy this thing is. Its hard to move but if I would have used less wood it would not be so sturdy so there is a trade off.

I've only vacuumed once and the primary reason I did was that it was wadding up. Well that and the debris.

Everytime I look at these DIY putting greens I get upset I bought a birdie ball and didn't just make one myself. All of them look way better and feel like they will roll truer.

Haha.. even the wife has an opinion with our toys! that is a great

about a carpet in garage with a putting disc... You'd have to give me strokes on your course

If I recall correct, you live in the Austin area. I am giving mine away since we sold our house. We can number the pieces before breaking it down and you can just screw it back together. As long as you have a truck, it's yours!

Any reason why you went with two pieces of MDF? Do you think a single piece of 1/2" would be okay? was this more for getting the right height built up or for the stiffness you wanted? Just thinking of how to save some weight

Just picked up an 8x12 (actually 13 feet but they charged me for 12) piece of Global Syn-Turf from Menards. Price was around $50 ($.69/sq ft).

 

I laid it down over carpeting and it Stimps at 8’8”. I have no doubt it will run faster when it is perfectly flat and on a more solid surface. Do you recommend using a thin dense pad (foam gym mat tiles, perhaps) underneath, to add some cushion?

I thought this was going to be something else. The professional at my old club did a significant indoor putting green in his basement. He actually had someone drill 4 1/4 inch holes in his concrete floors and layers down Fine AstroTurf. Massive green.

Definitely cheaper to buy it from them direct. Wish I knew before as it would have been $68 for the same thing including shipping on there site :angry22:

It looks to be a substantial savings, going through the website... $100 vs $40! I posted earlier in some threads that I had some turf from Menards but that may end of being used for a hitting mat, now.

I built mine last fall and I can attest the trunk liner/speaker box liner is hella fast. Like 12'+ stimp. I had to buy a different carpet to slow it down, glued it ontop and now it's closer to 10, possibly a shade under. More realistic for my average courses in the local area.

This looks like a project my father in law and I can tackle, he's a big woodworker. As a bonus I know someone in the carpet fitting business so I am sure I can find an offcut at around 10-11 stimp from him.
