Love My New Gap Wedge . . .

. . . So now I am thinking of getting rid of it.

I have struggled with my wedge game for some time - forever really. I recently started experimenting with over length irons (+1") and found that my overall iron and wedge game improved dramatically. So, I bought a new 50/12 Vokey SM6 with KBS TOUR 120 at +1" and have been knocking down flags for the past few rounds. My plan WAS to get the matching 54 & 58.

Here is where my plan starts falling apart.

At the time I purchased the SM6, I also bought a new set of MP64s (+1") with KBS C-Taper 120s. Also knocking down pins - best I've ever hit a set of irons. The real game changer, though, is the C-taper shafts. I have picked up a solid club to club and a half of distance through the bag, which leaves quite the gap between my PW (140-145 yards) and my GW (110-115 yards).

The answer to the distance gap, I think, is to replace the KBS Tour shaft in my Vokey with a C-Taper. But, I am sort of addicted now to the Mizuno feel. Add to the fact that Mizuno has no up-charge for the C-Taper (and grip of choice), and I am a little torn.

Should I stick with the Vokey I am having such a nice run with, or should I go with the club that should provide an easy transition from what might be the best performing and feeling irons I've owned?

Commit to the matching 54/58, there will be a little learning curve, but having a properly gapped set will be nice.

OR

stick with the 52 (bend it to 53) and buy another SM6 @ 58

Putting c-tapers into my wedges is the best thing I have ever done for my wedge game. Knockdowns and full swings have been incredible. I like the fact that the shafts make you hit them the right way to make them spin hard vs trying to keep spin off.

I have a Mizuno S5 50* and SM6 60*. I've always played Vokeys above 54*, but a 60* S5 is likely going to be in my bag shortly. IMO the feel of the Mizuno is by far an advantage, whereas the grind selection from vokey gives it an edge. I don't think there is anything spectacular about the Vokey 52 F grind, and if you're into the Mizuno feel you'll absolutely love the S5. Not to mention if you're sticking pins with one, I doubt you'll have issue with another - kinda a feel thing here IMO.

Why can't you add another wedge in between? Some people wouldn't be able to take the thought of not matching loft numbers I know but if you can find a 48* at 125-130 why not get it? Win- win

Interesting suggestion. I think I am kind of set on going 46 (pw)/ 50 (gw)/ 54 (sw) / 58 (Lw). I really think the gap is due to the difference in shafts. The C-Taper was quite the revelation for me. I have always spun the ball excessively with every club in the bag, and lost a lot of distance as a result. I played KBS Tour X for a few years to fight spin, and saw some major distance gains when I first put them in the bag. Over the past couple of years, however, I've lost enough swing speed to where the X-flex was no longer a viable option for me. I had resigned myself to the fact that distance was lost for good until I hit these C-Tapers. Distance is right where it used to be with the KBS X, and significantly improved over where it has been for the past few months. I assume that I can get rid of the gap by adding the C-taper to the wedge, but might need some loft tinkering as well. Thanks for the insight.

I have been shocked by the C-Tapers. On paper, they are a perfect fit for me. I have played a flex too stout due to spin issues, so a lower spinning shaft would seem to be the ticket to getting me into my "proper" flex. I tried the C-Tapers when they first came out, though, and hit nothing but low bullets on the range. Unplayable. Two weeks ago when deciding on this set of irons, I decided to give them a try (I figured I could pull them and sell them if they didn't work). My first swing on the course with these was a 9 iron that was as high and straight as any I have ever hit, and I can say the same through the bag. I was actually astounded at how high I hit them on the course (and I mean this in a good way). I am very curious to try them in a wedge to see if I see similar benefits in distance and accuracy.

Definitely give them a go.. I'm playing S+ in my wedges and between the two sets of irons I have, I'm either gaming X100's or KBS tour 130x's. If I didn't have so much money into the damn irons I'd be replacing the other shafts with some S+ as well.

Not sure that I have the swing to achieve proper launch with the C-taper x's though.. 7i down would be fine I'm sure, but moving up to the longer irons, I need to hold a green every now and again lol.

I did game the C-taper stiff's for a bit in my cobra kings when I got them, but they spun too much. If the S+ works in irons like they have my wedges, I've wasted a lot of time not gaming them lol.
