Help me pick a hybrid shaft! (95-100 grams)

Recommended Posts

Looking for a new shaft for my BB Alpha 815 20* hybrid. I have the stock Speeder 865 X in it and it just feels too light to me at 86 grams. I'm looking for something around 95-100 grams, and not too expensive

I'm a high speed, high launch, somewhat high spin guy. Also, this hybrid almost goes too far, so I don't want a shaft that is going to drop my spin a ton or kick hard and give me extra distance. Just want something that feels decent, and will give me consistent results and accuracy. Maybe lower torque should be a criteria that would help? Not sure. I guess low launch but not low spin is ideal but not sure if that's possible

Unfortunately I can't try these shafts but I did some research and narrowed it down to this list. Would love some feedback with your experiences and how they might compare to each other.

UST:

  • VTS Silver 100 X
  • iRod (new one) 95 X
  • Elements Fire 100 X

Aerotech

  • Steelfiber hls980 X

Aldila

  • RIP Phenom 100 X

KBS

  • Steel Hybrid 110 X

Thanks guys!

You describe me to some degree. Except I'm not that high launch or spin more mid.

I got a Fujikura Motore Speeder 9.8HB Tour Spec on a whim in a trade once. I figured it would be too much shaft for me. Oh my god I love it. Smooth but stout. Beauty piercing flight. And heavy!

Otherwise I was looking at the Toud Ads but they expensive.

A cheaper option was the Mitsubishi Diamana Shafts S+ or D+. Can get them in 90-100gram

Or experimenting with an Aerotech Steelfibre in a heavier weight.

Ever since my first hybrid (Sonartec MD), I've used the ALDILA NV 105 Hybrid shaft. I'm a high ss and high spin player as well, and I bought a number of them so that I could keep using them as shafts in new hybrids (Sonartec HB-001, TM RBZ stage 2, and now TM SLDR).

You should take a look at the NV 105 Hybrid...can be found inexpensively now (around $30).

The Kiyoshi Black hybrid sounds pretty close to what you are looking for. It has low launch, but it is not super low spin. I believe it is 93 grams.

Too expensive

Well, I haven't used any of those, but I would personally lean to the recoil or steelfiber. But I am used to iron shafts in hybrids.

How are iron shafts different than hybrid shafts? Have no experience with that

I will vote for lightweight steel !

use to have graphite shaft on my 21* hybrid, never works for me.

After changed to NS PRO 950GH Utility, the result is very very different. 5w out of my bag.

add a 16* hybrid with the same shaft later last year, but can't launch the ball higher, replaced the shaft with NS PRO ZELOS 7 HYBRID two weeks ago, about 20g lighter the the 950 utility, problem solved! 3w out of my bag.

I say go with the SF iron shaft. It's far more stable than the Aldila Tour Green, gives a pretty flat mid flight, costs <$50 new and feels great. I have the 110s in my R15 hybrid and Apex UT. Another good option is the Recoil but that has more of that kick feel you said you didn't want.

Feel isn't as important, I'm just wondering if the kick will boost distance which I don't want.

Also, anyone know anything about the Graphite Design G-Series shaft? Really cheap for some reason, and there's a 95x

I didn't notice the extra kick or an appreciable distance boost but I gained a lot of consistency after installing the SF. The ball flight with the SF is very straight. The G series is more of a mid-high launch/mid spin shaft so it's probably not what you're looking for.

Another vote for the UST VTS. I used to play one in my 20 degree hybrid and it's really stable, controlled and heavy. I went with a UST Irod in my new hybrid and like it a lot, bit it definitely kicks more compared to the VTS.

Regards

Michael

But what does the kick mean in terms of results?

Hi Miami,

that's a tough question, that I can't answer. I used our own design (Kimura Shihan) with the VTS and changed to the Titleist 915H just to demo the Irod shaft.

The ballspeeds are higher with the 915, so I do see more distance with my hybrid. I wouldn't say, that it comes from the shaft. The Irod feels more like the Recoil shafts in my irons, while the VTS feels more stable. I can hit a pretty hard hook with the Irod, that I didn't see with the VTS. Both are fairly similar in weight and length and swingweight are also compareable.

The 915 is a bit more upright, which promotes the draw a bit. I will have to adjust the lieangle to the flatest option and see, if that changes the hook tendencies with that combo.

Regards

Michael

I know it's not on your list, but the shaft you described it the Nunchuk hybrid. Fits everything you asked for.

How so?

Heavy. Check

Consistent. Check.

No jump in distance (maybe less). Check.

Feels decent. Check

Not crazy $$. Check

Was already on my watchlist! Trust me I really dug deep thru the internet lol. I read up on it earlier and I think it's more of a low launch/spin tho

Good price too. Also saw some Axivcore shafts that look good. The thing is I'm a cheapskate and all the shafts I listed I can get for under $20 thru my shop
