Clubs everyone else loves, and you don't: ie Apex CF16

Recommended Posts

Whilst blathering on an Adams lovefest thread, it struck me how out of kilter I am in my 'meh' reaction to the Callaway Apex CF16 irons compared to the universal love they get at THP and here (albeit slightly less fervent).

I even went as far as to buy a CF16 7 iron so I could try it on course.

But while I hit it OK, I hit many clubs OK.

Same thing when I tried the Ping G30 driver. And every Cameron putter.

It's nothing I can put a finger on (well, sound with the G30 and missed putts with various Scotties), but somewhat perplexing.

G30 played bad for me also when tried against my G25. I was considering doing the same as you as regards buying a CF16 to test on course(such is the hype).

Guys love the Srixon Z745 and Z535 irons, but they went low and short for me on my tests.

Think I will stick with my i25s.

AP2, I have tried to like them several times but something about the head shape just turns me off and I always change my mind.
me 2. My pal off 4 plays great with his, but when I look down at them they do not suit my eye.

AP2's

CF16's

Z545's

In a recent fitting I disliked all of the above. Got great numbers from the CF16's, but they lacked the feel. Crazy thing I loved the Z745's. I got better numbers with the Z745's than I did w/ the Z545's by a long shot and did not notice a huge drop in forgiveness.

+1. I didn't like the way they felt or the turf interaction. Not to mention the price they charge for them and then upcharge on shafts on top of that.

Hit the CF16 outside at demo days. Felt "thin" at impact, similar to the XR Pro,which I was playing at the time.

Might be the cup face influence. Nothing terrible about the iron, just not "oh wow".

Best feeling irons were the ApexPro,MP25,and Ping I1E.

Hope Srixon comes out with a lefty 745 (746?),would love to try it.

Surprisingly,I've always liked AP2s. Every model since the beginning.

Not the best look or feel, but repeatable, dependable results. 714 is my favorite.

I felt this way about the first M1 I received before I knew they tipped their shafts an inch. I went back to the M1 with an untipped shaft and it was night and day for me.

I actually sold mine before I found out about the tipping. Makes me want to give it another go round. Have regretted selling since I found out

I know folks sleep with their SLDR, but to me it felt like having a brick tied to the end of the shaft. Just awful feedback for me.

Agree completely. Could possibly be the worst driver I actually paid full retail price for. I hit it just fine in the bay at the Golfsmith location where I bought it, but out on the course it just felt terrible.

Also, Scotty Camerons just don't do it for me. They get a ton of love (seemingly universally), but I've found tons of other putters that feel better and fit my stroke better

I have been bitten by the CF16 love. Albeit only in the longer irons. I ended up with the combo set, and the 8 iron down really work well in the Pro's, great feel and they are beautiful. I could always use more forgiveness in the longer irons, I would have preferred the CF 16 in the 4,5,6 and the Pro in the 7, but I am liking them a ton so far.

I have never liked any Cameron putter. I HATED every SLDR iteration I tried. I know it is likely to get me kicked off of WRX, but the Bio Cell and Bio Cell + for me were horrible. I even tried a pile of different shafts, but nothing ever worked right. I also could never get the snap hook out of my swing with the M1 either.

I also hate Vokey wedges, not sure what it is about them. I have tried different finishes and grinds, but nothing works.

Ap2. Sooooo many CB irons I prefer the fee and look of. I simply don't get the hype.

This might get me kicked off the forum, especially because I've gamed just about every iteration of TM drivers before starting with the R11. But the M1/M2 drivers we're just awful in my hands. And to some previous poster's point about the stock shafts being tipped, I never played any of the stock shafts. I tried everyone of my 8-10 TM tipped shafts I have lying around. Just plain hated it.

Honorable Mentions:

OTR scotty's although I've never rolled a tour dept model so maybe that would change my mind.

Vokey wedges

Vokey wedges, Scotty putters, Cally drivers, and Titleist drivers too. Can't stand the feedback I get with all of them. Cally I launch great but they spin like crazy and don't go anywhere. Titleist spins like a top for me too. Scotty putters feel clanky and vokey wedges have no feel to them from my experience.
