Please.... Release this putter!

With the #1 and #2 ranked players in the world gaming a slant neck Spider, TM should close up shop if they can't get this thing to retail before next Spring. I mean literally...they no longer deserve to exist as a going concern if they can't make that happen.

I was told by our Taylormade rep that they are releasing the exact replica of Jason Day's putter late this fall and it will cost about $300. Same red color, no site lines, slant neck, etc. Really hope they offer a black version as well though.

sorry, but that doesn't make sense. TM released 15 of them through the vault last month. They are being flipped right now on the Bay for $3300-3700. One guy has one on there for $10,000 Obo!! LOL! Crazy stuff.

They were talking about DJ's putter change on Sirius/XM Golf Channel 92 over the weekend and they said that DJ kept seeing JD making all kinds of putts when they played together so he asked TM for one. They of course sent him a red new one and while he liked it he didn't like the red color. Low and behold his brother Austin had a black version so Dustin grabbed it and used it to crush the field this week. Maybe Austin will get a little extra cut from the purse this week lol

So the slant version of this has a bit of toe hang??

Yes, and the double bend is face balanced.

I might actually prefer the double bend for this reason. I don't use it bc Day (and now Johnson) does- I use it bc to me it's an incredibly solid putter that I align and stroke well w great weighting.

That's the exact reason I use the double bend. I like the slant neck look better, but I simply putt better with face balanced.

Agreed. I don't want toe hang in a mallet. Also, the single, long sight line is great for alignment (as opposed to the tour Guy's naked version). I don't know why TM released the version it did to the public, but a non-cynical view is that we'd putt better with it than the slant-neck, naked version.

I absolutely agree. Frankly I think the sight line, and to a greater extent, the half circle graphics on the original and ghost spider make alignment even easier. I appreciate the clean look of no line, but I'd rather have the visual functionality of the alignment aid on the putter. I really think the ghost spider, double bend, with full graphics is the easiest spider of the bunch to make putts with.

I have been saying this for months now, but everyone wants to just focus on what TM hasn't released versus what they have. The slant neck, no sight line version is not easy to line up if it doesn't immediately fit your eye/stroke. I believe a major part of TM's decision to release the Spider Limited with a sight line and a double bend shaft was to release a putter that was usable by most of the golfers who would buy one. Face balanced mallets with alignment aids are more popular than mallets with toe hang and limited alignment help.

If you think you need an alignment aid to line up that monstrous head, it probably doesn't matter what's on it. I mean seriously, you may prefer the look of something on top, but I can't imagine it would actually help you line a putt up any better than the montstrous head alone does. That said, to each his own.

Many people want a mallet but have a more gated stroke. The whole face balanced thing has been marketed to death to the point that people think that it's a positive whether they actually need a face balanced putter or not. I suspect MOST people fall somewhere in the middle and would do better a little toe hang. The good thing about Day's/Johnson's putter is that in theory, it's the best of all worlds: a little toe hang, all the benefits of a high MOI head and some roll technology.

I have been gaming the JDay black Itsy Bitsy proto with the slant neck and no sight line since last September, so I can speak to this from experience. This putter generates a lot of interest from other golfers who want to try it out, but the vast majority of them can't hit the hole from 3 feet away on their first putt. The head is not that big for a high MOI mallet and its surprisingly hard to align for a lot of players. It's one of those putters that if it fits you well immediately, you're going to fall in love with it. But I just don't think it fits that many players from what I've seen.

I agree with you on the face-balanced concept getting over exposed and way too much hype as a cure-all. But consumers seem to be the ones buying face-balanced mallets over ones with toe hang, so that's what companies are going to produce for retail. The few plumbers neck mallets that Odyssey have release never seem that popular and even the slant models of TaylorMade's Ghost Spider S and Si weren't very popular in their time.

I do hope that TaylorMade releases a retail version of the Itsy Bitsy proto at some point, now that they've had two of their staffers have great success with it. It's an amazing putter.

You'd know better than me then. For some reason plumbers necks on mallets just never look quite right...

Cameron usually manipulates toe hand with the shaft or some internal weighting method I suppose in his shaft-in-head designs.. I think the M2 has a little toe hang, for example, and Ping does this, too, with their stroke fitting system. People must prefer that look to a slant neck.

I posted this on the other DJ putter discussion thread. Pretty interesting video. It shows how much work actually is involved in making the Day/DJ prototype.

It also partially explains why TM hasn't released it on a large scale. Too time consuming to produce. I'm sure they could cast an entirely new head if they thought the demand was there, but apparently they don't. Perhaps someone in management also just likes having some models be rare and have a "buzz" around them.
