MD/VA/DC Golfers - Ten Seconds or Less

Question for you guys building your own clubs: I'm thinking of attempting to do this myself. What all do I need? Any brands or versions of tools/supplies I should use over others? I'd like to be able to install shafts in adapters and clubs and also regroup my clubs. I've been hoing so many shafts I figured this will let me save a couple bucks.

I do all of my own work and have for a few years now. Do some work time to time for dudes on the thread as well.

The only thing equipment wise that is truly golf related is a graphite shaft extractor if you want to do adapters, etc. I found a deal on a really nice used GolfSmith puller. People buy them, use them once, then dump them. No need to buy brand new.

Other 2 things you will use all the time: electric drill and heat gun. 3rd thing: if you want to do the world's easiest grip changes, buy an air compressor. I literally just did 5 of my clubs this evening in 5 minutes. No mess.

Other stuff I have / use: 2 part golf epoxy, highly suggest a hosel brush (thanks Fabb), ferrules, grip tape/solvent if you don't want to blow on, tape measure, metal blade hack saw, gram scale (Skiballs can assist here probably), razor knife, sand paper, acetone, 1.2 million paper towels, butane torch, bandaids.

Thank you! Checking Craigslist now for a puller. Do you use any specific brand of epoxy?

I use the GolfSmith tour set epoxy. I really like the 5 min stuff because I am really impatient. The latest I have been using is the normal set which takes a couple hours to gel before you can finish ferrules / wiggle them / put them in your bag and forget about them.

Words of experience: You only need at most a quarter sized dollop of daisy epoxy. Use an applicator of some sort (I use a small drill bit or metal skewer) to add epoxy to the walls of the hosel, apply a thin coat to the tip of the shaft, then spin when you install the two. This evenly coats all surfaces and you don't shoot 4" of epoxy into the shaft. I have seen installs where there was 5-6 inches of dry epoxy in the shaft. I have no idea how its humanly possible. This can also snap a graphite shaft in half.

Make sure to drill out the old epoxy from the shaft entirely. You must have somewhere for the air to escape from the hosel or you will have an airlock and won't be able to seat the two properly. Also a good time to have a compressor so you can blow out the rest of the epoxy residue from the shaft.

Edit* good luck on CL, ebay or a WTB post on here would be your best bet.

Ditto on all this, but I guess I need DT to teach me how to use the air compressor.

I have always had good luck with Golfworks for epoxy and ferrules. Invest in a good, hydraulic puller. Dont try the "economy" models.

I held out forever. I thought it was bogus. I was wrong. It is awesome. Plus I can save all the grips when I burn through clubs. (Like the clubs I did tonight)

Other recommendation: Get ferrules through Diamond Tour Golf. They have designated iron / wood ferrules. I haven't had to finish a ferrule since finding them. So far they have fit everything I put them on perfectly. Fabb ordered some Titleist ferrules through GW for the CBs I did. They were a real pill.

Oh no, I bought a compressor, and have generally failed at everything but pulling superstroke grips.

This is something that saves a ton of money, get that T shape tool so you can save grips. So many times grips still have plenty of life but get cut. A decent amount of mineral spirit, slip the tool and spin it around to break the seal between the tape and grip and then work your way down then pull it off. First few times its a pain, but once you figure it out its easy

Ive had great luck with cell parts, golfsmith ferrules, golfsmith club building epoxy, and I have an economy puller and its fine for what I do. When I need to be really careful, I head over to my brother in laws and use his legit one.

Also, torch is so much easier and faster then a heat gun..

GTF: -12. Book it. You may as well just pay me now. I'll use all my winnings to invest in dried mangoes.

Yep, book it. Was pounding it at the range compared to normal. And by pounding it at the range I mean I was poking it out there mostly kind of straight. One of the best range sessions I've had all year.

Those are words that I can't possible come to regret later after I stink it up.

Tinkering with my new Big Dog, didn't come with a tool so was using a drill bit. Ended up stripping one of the adjustable weights and can't get the s.o.b out. Anybody ever pull such a Dbag move? Have any Jack of the Trade tips for a fella? That poor dog didn't make it to its 1st tee box..

Next time ask the local Callaway rep if he has an extra wrench laying around before using a drill bit.

I have a few extra Callaway wrenches and will stick one in my bag for tomorrow. Taylormade/Callaway/Titleist all use the same wrench, and only Cobra uses a different one to my knowledge.

It sounds like you had a problem with some redneck engineering though.

If I get down there in reasonable time maybe try to swing by 1st, ill call ya in the a.m. It's obviously still functional, just in the fade set up, as in 40 yard fade set up.. atleast I kno I wont end up in trouble on the left ay

If you can't figure out who the D player is within the first 5 min of seeing Fabb's post, you are the D player.

As the D player, I expect you all to carry us to -13.

Looking at the Grint, you are actually the B player. I'm not feeling so good about all my bets now.

If you're already conceding any chance at winning, I heard eagle is looking for somebody lacking integrity to get their entire team to throw a hole and make a double bogey so he can win $10 off city.
