What's the deal w/ Camillo Villegas' swing?

So this question has been brewing in my mind for a while: I've noticed Camillo plays weak lofts; On his irons up to 2 deg. weak, and he games high lofted drivers, not to mention the hybrids.

 

He has plenty of speed; He must be using these weaker lofts cause he has a steeper impact position? I'm thinking he really delofts the club and thus has a harder time getting the ball up making him use weaker lofts?

 

Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks for the replies guys, being a low ball hitter sounds like a good answer and its simple. Because he does generate adequate clubhead speed, I still have my suspicions that he might have a really low dynamic loft.. Another opinion was that he didn't produce a lot of spin. Wish I could ask him myself! Add that to my list of unanswerable questions..

In 2008, he and Anthony Kim both won twice, his events were two playoff events. Seemed like they were set to be the next two biggest stars in golf.

Man, remeber when he was killing it? Johnny was falling all over himself at his ball flight, think it was 2010 Honda classic.

He seems to spend more time on his bike these days than he does playing golf.

 

Interesting guy to be sure. Definitely thought that he was going to be one the go to guys for a long time the way that he announced himself onto the scene but that seems a long time ago now. The last couple of wins that he has had seem to come completely out of the blue and then he went back into mid-field or scraping to make the cut finishes.

It's funny to me thinking back now about his quest for more distance off the tee. At one point he was looking to gain 10-15 lbs while staying lean in hopes of hitting further drives. Knowing what we know today about spin, launch angle, etc., it seems that it would have been easier for him to perform a swing change and hit up or at least have an even attack angle to launch the ball higher and spin it less. A de-lofted swing with increased loft clubs sounds like more spin all day, which kills distance in most cases.

According to wiki, for what that's worth, he's playing the PGA tour this year based on past champion status.

I think Camillo has just enough speed that he can get away with it. On another note: Just think about all the greats from past generations: lots of these guys hit down with their drivers. Nick Faldo comes to mind.. I think the super high spin balls of that time helped those guys who hit down get the ball in the air. DJ has a really low dynamic loft also. But he creates so much power that he can launch anything! I think tiger also hit down in his prime. Looking at Tiger/DJs best driving performances you notice that their drives were basically all carry. DJ won the us open with like an 11 degree driver or something.

If I remember right there was a lawsuit between Cobra and Taylormade over his contract status. If I remember right he started playing taylormade clubs in fall/winter 2008 and he still had time on his Cobra. That could have affected a bit

It's just a number on the bottom of the club. For example, the TM 2016 M2 5-iron 21.5º. A friend of mine's 5-iron is 28º.
