Golf Trip With the Wife

Recommended Posts

Looking to take a extended weekend trip somewhere this summer/fall with the wife. She enjoys golfing as well so I would like to go somewhere were we can play a round or two and still do some relaxing seeing the town kinda thing. Possibly stay at a golf resort? Just kinda depends. We aren't night owls. Just a nice relaxing getaway kinda trip, hopefully somewhat budget friendly.

We are in TX FWIW.

any suggestions.....i've thought Kiawah, or maybe Arizona but I'm not sure what to do there at both places besides just golf. I even thought somewhere in the mountains would be nice to get away from the TX heat.

any good suggestions???

Kiawah is a good idea. Charleston is very close by and is a great city to visit if you love food. Streamsong in the Fall is still warm but a very new, modern resort close to Orlando and Tampa. Reynolds Lake Oconee is near Atlanta and has several golf courses to play. The Ritz there has plenty to do besides golf.

We live in AZ (and NYC) but have the done the following weekend trips in the last couple of years.

Weekend Trips:

Pebble

Pinehurst

The Algarve in Portugal

Norway (Lofoten and, believe it or not that was only a weekend trip)

Bahamas

Ireland

Ft. Lauderdale

Longer trips:

Bermuda

Scotland

Cabo

Now, we are both commonly in Europe for business so the weekend trips there seem a little more daunting than they are even if one of us has to sacrifice flying there and back for a weekend. I can recommend all of them as worthwhile other than Fort Lauderdale. It blows.

I'd go to Monterey / Carmel, CA. You can spend as much or little as you want. Can blow big money at Pebble on golf, moderate amount at say Poppy or go budget at Bayonet. Same with hotels... Ive stayed at Spanish Bay for $600+ per night and I've stayed at the Hyatt in Monterey at like $100 per night. Awesome restaraunts in Carmel too. Place is tough to beat and it won't be hotter-than-hell like it will in Texas.

Wife and I did a Napa trip a few years ago. Played golf in the AM wine tastings in the PM it was one of our favorite trips. Kiawah is nice weekend trip, as mentioned above, because Charleston is only 30 minutes away and is a historic old town to explore with lots of great dining spots. Reynolds Plantation would also work. A lot of great golf, there are a lot of activities around the lake and perfect for those who are not night owls as there ain't much to do there after dinner.

He said $3k. I don't think there's any there that you couldn't do for $3k if you wanted.

A couple might be slightly more but $3k for an extended weekend is quite doable in most situations.

3k is gonna get a couple to Europe? Pebble? I'd love to see the ledger that makes that work.

Yes. Here's the ledger for Portugal:

Flights available for as little as $534 each = $1068

Nice hotels available for $122 = $366

Now we have $1600 left over for golf and food which are both fairly cheap in the Algarve (unless you play Monte Rei). Also rental car which can be had for very little cost as well.

Proof below in two screen shots:

Expertflyer fare list:

Expedia hotel listing:

That was a quick look. I'm sure I could do better if I try with hotel + golf packages

I take quite a few long weekend golf trips and the best thing I found is to see where the direct flights from your closest airports go. It's not worth wasting a day each way for travel especially when you're in Texas and could be on either coast in 3 hours. Plus the possibility of the airline losing your clubs goes down significantly.

As for places to go, my suggestions are Charleston, SC and Asheville, NC. Both have good golf, good food and things to do when you're not golfing and eating. Plus in the early fall, the weather should be beautiful.

Oy. Kiawah is too isolated. Yes, Charleston is close, but not close enough. Same with Reynolds. Scottsdale is nice, but just too hot in summer. Same with Orlando and Streamsong. Northern Michigan has fantastic golf, but unless you like mother nature, it's light on cultural attractions.

Southern California is excellent. Maybe Kohler in Wisconsin. White Sulphur Springs?

Lots of good suggestions made, and I've visited many of them.

But, living in Texas myself, I enjoy escaping the 100* Texas summers for the cooler north.

My personal preference is northern Minnesota, where summer temperatures are in the mid 70s and the fall offers spectacular foliage color - something not present in Texas. The terrain is rolling, the forests are different, and lakes and rivers abound. You can fly to Minneapolis and hit the Mall of the Americas, then drive north.

I'd suggest you look at one of the north central states of Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Michigan. The farther north you go, the cooler the summer temperatures.

My Southern wife loves it up there - and we now have our own place there - we're locked in/addicted to it now. Oh, and did I mention the fishing and boating?

If I can help with specific suggestions, please message me.

Pebble is VERY do-able... They run specials all the time that include golf and room..

Want to get away from the heat and still have plenty to do? Come on up this way--plenty of great golf courses in Salt Lake City area and plenty to do. Look at the Teton Valley in Idaho--great courses west of the Tetons and then play in Jackson Hole. Do Yellowstone for a day and then cruise on over to Sun Valley, Idaho for golf. Shouldn't cost you an enormous amount of money, the weather is great, the people great, and the scenery/golf fantastic.

Took my wife to pebble about 6 yrs ago for a long weekend...... She now loves to go every year. Not to many places with the mild weather and beauty of the peninsula. It will challenge your budget, but with a direct flight for us from Phx to Monterey, travel and scenery make this a very relaxing trip. She loves most the fireplaces at the lodge (always request the Alvorada building), but there are some less expensive options both in hotels and Golf. If you stay at the resort they will send a driver for you in San Fran.

Or you could just make it a staycation and Play the TPC courses and stay at the mariott in San Antonio..... Had a great time there a few years ago. Really liked the courses.

Asheville would not be a bad choice, although we lack high-end (public) golfing in this area.. plenty of decent options though. But tons to do in Asheville (good food, great craft beer scene, good music scene), the Great Smoky Mountains Nat'l Park (<-- see avatar) is a short drive away, Blue Ridge Parkway (<-- see avatar), etc. Regional airports would be Asheville, Greenville-Spartanburg, Johnson City, Knoxville and all have direct flights to TX.

If you go in the Summer, I recommend Lake Tahoe. Great Summer weather and wonderful golf courses.

If you go later, I recommend Cabo. It's a very special place.
