The July-August 1984 Texas Golf Classics Catalog - 1984 prices

 

A little history - before the Wood Bros Texan became their main focus, Dave Wood and his brothers operated a club repair and classic club sale business.

 

This Catalog marks the introduction of the famous Texan + serves as a garage sale of existing stock, as Dave embarked on his Wood Bros Texan journey.

The 1st Texan - marked Texan on top in script.

 

The leading edge is metal instead of the later rams horn slip.

 

The state of Texas sole plate is smaller than the later clubs.

 

Linseed oil hardened.

 

Used the finest "fish paper" fiber inserts.

 

 

 

I am fortunate to own one of these 1st generation Texans.

Arnold Palmer bought a Herman Barron driver from Dave around this time.. Dave told me the story. Thanks for posting Texsport.

 

Do you know how PGA Players started to become interested in Dave's Texan? When college players qualified for PGA events and were hitting them on the range. Players noticed the clubs and thats how the interest got started. Rest is History.

Yes, that was the era of the great U of Houston and U of Texas golf teams, with many future Tour stars + local club pros who played Tour events.

 

Couples, Stanley, Mahaffey, Crenshaw, Brown,Blackmar, Fergus, Fiori, etc.

 

Collin Montgomery was at Houston Baptist also.

 

At one time, my club, Sugar Creek CC, had U of H and Houston Baptist players practicing there nearly every day + Nancy Lopez lived and played there. The Head Pro was Jack Montgomery, an original and career Hogan Golf staff member following his TCU days, and an 11 year PGA Tour player. Lots of role models for the members kids to learn from - I know of 5 kids from that era who also became pros, either Tour players or club pros, and one multiple-time ladies City of Houston champion.

 

Now the home of Top 100 instructor Jim Murphy.

 

Head pro at Sugar Creek is now my son's former roommate from his U of Houston golf team days, Eric Bogar.

 

For Wood Bros business, having the Houston Open site only a few miles away from Wood Bros shop, and having Tour access also helped.

 

Bob Tway was possibly the first Tour players to order a Texan, and he won the PGA Championship using it in 1986.

 

I have a Wood Bros Texan driver formally owned by Tour player Jim Delsing, which he got on the Houston Open driving range.

I was also on their mailing list back in the day. It would come in the mail and I would be like the proverbial kid in a candy store. As I look at their offerings, I think that I either own or have owned almost everything on the first 2 or 3 pages.

Texsport, I'm fortunate to have an early Texan as well (bought via drewspin who bought it along with a couple of other rare/one of a kind WB's of someone in the Houston area in 2009(?)). Thought I'd share some pictures here (refinished by persimmonpal):

 

Made by hand in autumn of 1984. Aluminum soleplate. Fantastic driver (didn't even dare to hit it for a long time due to the loft designation and the small neckcrack, but took the plunge beginning this year and it's been in my bag since).

I think I got mine from drewspin also.

 

The early clubs all had different inserts - red-white-red, solid red, white-black-white, etc.

While here, let me ask you the following.

 

Is it possible the LH Texan Driver you own (with the Graphite shaft) could have been made for Phil Blackmar's Dad?

Anything is possible. I sent DW a photo but he said he'd have to look at the club in person. He moved to California before I had a chance to show it to him.

 

The Blackmar story sounds possible, as I believe I acquired the driver in Texas, which may or may not be relevant.
