Sorry for the rant but I didn't know what other forum to post this in.

 

I come to this site because it's informative and the classifieds keep prices mostly where they should be.

I applaud the admins for taking the nike shoe dumps down. It seems we now have other dumps happening in the Kirkland golf balls. This sport is super expensive to start with and everyone is looking for a deal. It really irritates me that people rush out and buy all this stuff up only to sell it on here or the Facebook pages.

I hear you. On a related note: the sport would be a heck of a lot more approachable to new people if prices stayed in check. The prices for golf clothing, clubs and accessories - then add greens fees? No wonder people take up tennis. You can get a used racket and a tube of balls for $ 50.00 and play on a HS court when school is out.

I mean I'm not buying them at all, I'm just trying to make a point. You take offence with the practice on moral grounds (which is fine), but the fact is that (debatably, barring competition issues) Costco really has little to no say about what happens to those balls once they have been sold to the first customer. And from an economic standpoint (which is just something I find interesting) the fact that they can be sold at a profit on the secondary market suggests that Costco should charge more.

 

I'd also like to point out that Costco did this as well several years ago with the r7 drivers, buying shipments from third parties and selling them at below MSRP to the chagrin of Taylormade and their vendors.

This was mostly my concern, I give a lot of my clubs, bags and balls to younger guys who need them. I do list items on classifieds also. The biggest thing I hear from young people in my area is they can't afford to play. I thought we were trying to grow the game!

You can get a set of top class clubs from only several years ago for the price of a family of four at the movie theater. It is maybe the expectations that are unreasonable. Also, not picking on you, but I fail to see how people flipping KSigs have anything to do with making this game unaffordable? Again, look at the deal just posted in DoND for 60 balls for $16 shipped....

There are whole entire costco stores in major markets that exist only to sell to restaurants. They're actually pretty cool, they sell 55 gallon drums of olive oil and stuff like that.

No one 'deserves' to be able to buy a golf product - such as a Ksig - just because they are fantastic and really into golf, gosh darnit.

It's like complaining about not getting tickets to a gig, because the resellers got their first. This stuff happens, you either mitigate it or you whinge about it.

 

If some muppet is willing to pay over the odds for something, so be it. If they weren't, the secondary market and the push some make to get in on it wouldn't be there.

I believe golf is getting more expensive by the year. However I have lots of courses near me. Most are 9 hole courses. 1 is a beautiful 18 hole course that would rival most courses in this state. Single memberships range from 207.50 to 600 plus tax. With used equipment and smaller courses there is no reason I couldn't start with nothing buys some good equipment and membership and be well short of 2000 over 5 years. New equipment, clothing, and accessories not the ability to golf.

My favorite local course is Balboa, a muni. Costs $24 weekend twilight, $19 weekday twilight. For 5 or so hours of time, I'd find it much harder to entertain (sometimes!) myself somewhere else for less...
