Anybody else game 2-PW?

After looking over my scores from this Winter, and last season, I noticed that most of the shots I was leaving on the course were from hitting hybrids (19, 23 degree) and fairway woods (15 degree).

About 2 weeks ago i decided to pick up a 2/3 iron to fill out the top of the bag, and the results have been great. I have played at or below my handicap for the past 4 rounds, and my OBs have been (almost) eliminated.

I know it's entirely personal, as some strike hybrids and fairways better than others, but I was wondering if anybody else has had success with this setup, as I haven't seen it out on the course very often.

I played 2-pw or 18-19 degree hybrid and 3-pw, with 54-60 degree wedges, for years. Now I play with a 2 driving iron, 4-pw, and 52-56-60. I used to practice a lot more and was really good with using a low bounce 60 degree for everything around the greens, but now I find that a 56 with a lot of bounce is way easier to use, and wedge play is easier when you don't practice all the partial swings with more wedges.

I'm not very good with hybrids or fairway woods and hit long irons well, hence the driving iron. So yeah, I like this setup.

2-pw, 51, 55, 59 degree wedges, driver, putter...i find a 2 iron to be immensely more workable than a hybrid and dint have any issues with it landing softly. I think, maybe due to my height(5-11) that it is near perfect for me at set up so that i dont have to worry about contact at all.

Its my favourite club...i have a Titleist 690.cb, a mizuno mp 64 bent to a 2 iron, a muirfield (3 iron degrre now), a hogan pc 2 iron...if im seriously playing, its the Titleist 690.cb, if im having fun, ill throw in the older paper thin ones. Regardless, there is no right or wrong set up...i just ask myself, can i hit this 9 out of 10 times with positive results. I can murder my sldr hybrid, set at 17.5 degrees, but i just have more options with trajevtory etc with the 2 iron

In spite of what's listed in my sig, I currently have 2-PW Ram TG-898s in my bag. Another alternative is carrying a Golden Ram 1 iron on top of my Golden Ram TW276 irons. The 1 iron might sound impressive, but it's only 1° stronger than the TG-898 2 iron; they're essentially the same club.

I hit hybrids ok, but generally do better with long irons. The only place the hybrids are better are the occasional shots out of the rough, where a 2 iron isn't quite as wonderful. ;)

I suck at hitting any type of wood (off the tee or off the ground)...my swing is just too steep and I create too much spin. AND I am too old to start changing my swing now as I used to play to a 6.

So with all that said (when you look at my sig) I hit a PING Eye 2 One iron off the tee and have put it out there 250 on occasion...but to be totally honest I don't hit it as consistent as my i20 3 iron of the tee so a lot of the time I just hit my 3 iron off the tee. I love my i20 3 iron and I wish PING would have offered a two iron in the i20 model. Yeah there is no going for par 5's in two but the strength of my game is irons and short game so I try to play to my strength.

I once shot an 82 (from around 6.500 yards) with the longest club in my bag being a 6 iron. I was working on some things with my swing and my coach at the time said I was not allowed to swing anything longer than a 6 iron until I made the change...so one day I went and played from the white tees this way. It is very enlightening to how good one can score when they keep it in play and get up and down in two when missing a green.

Did it for my ego, 2iron was 21*....realizing they are traditional lofts....

Secondly, relized when the ball is bigger than the actual face of the club.... yeah it was time to move one.

Dumped the 2 iron......as I had a new set with a 21* 3 iron.....

Dumped the 3 iron Currently and rock 4-PW and a 5wood....

Im no pro, never will be one... dont practice like I used to, 2 kids....

the game is hard as it is..... just cant justify it anymore....... LOVE my 5 wood... that kicked out the 2 and the 3....... just saying....

That's about the same date range I was going to say. I had some MacGregor blades that I would carry the 2 iron with on occasion till the mid 90's. I had a 1 iron I tired to use for a while that was basically a Ping Eye2 knock off.

Hybrids always messed with me, but fairway woods have always been good to me. I even have a 9 wood that makes it in the bag on occasion. :swoon:

Totally understand your point, but I think you are making a mistake if you assume people who want to hit 2 irons and 3 irons are just stoking their egos. Some of us, regardless of skill level, just hit irons better than woods or hybrids. In fact, the lower your skill level and the less you practice, the more it makes sense to just stick with what you know.

Personally, I gravitate towards irins because they are just more consistent. Woods bring in a big miss that I don't want to deal with. If I totally miss hit my fw wood, I might be 50 yards ob. If I miss hit my long iron, it is usually atleast somewhere closer to the hole and playable, unless there is a long forced carry or something. Guys that are trying to break par might need to hit par 5s in 2 or squeeze extra yards out of tee shots. Those of us trying to get to single digits just need to take out the big misses and get around the course.

I've never played with a 2 iron. My brother used to have the bronze Ping Eye 2 2 iron and I hit it every once in a while. I've played 3-PW ever since I got my set of Ping Eye 3's when I was in 8th grade. Still play that setup now in my 716 AP2's.

Depending on how far back you want to take it, even in those Eye2s you're hitting a club that was a 2 iron only a few years before.

20° was the 2 iron loft of the FG-17s from 1981-1983, and 21° was the 2 iron loft for the Palmer Original Standards, which came out in 1987.

The number on the sole is just that, a number. :)

mildly related comment... David Duval interview in Golf Digest, or Golf Mag, in the late 90s, maybe 2000. The subject of Gene Sarazen's albatross at Augusta comes up. Duval is talking about how much the game had changed, that "Sarazen's 4 wood would now be a 3 iron shot" for a Tour Pro.

What's interesting about that, in the mid 30s, the 4 wood was a club with a loft around 20°, maybe even 21°. In Duval's time, the clubs he was playing had a 3 iron that was about 20° or 21°. Aside from the obvious length differences, which may not have been as different as one might think at first, it's kind of the same club.

club number, irrelevant. Loft matters much more. :)

man i used to be a baller, used these as a university golfer

This is what I had in 1-PW and then had the 51 56 and 61 added

I have the 1 in my office and my dad has the 3-PW. He doesn't play anymore so I will take them back and give them a test run this summer. I used to LOVE the hollow cavity in 1-4 iron

2 is gone somewhere. Believe it or not that was the best stick in my bag. Go to club on all tight holes. I hated the 3w back in the day

I just purchased a set of black boron baby blades, PW-2i, as my gamer irons, and as part of the acquisition, I have vowed NEVER to separate the set. So yeah I am a first time 2i owner and I am going to game it this season for the majority of my rounds. My first round out with the set I shot 82 which is good for me as a 10 'cap, so I'm good to go with it. I also hit it about five times during the round and it was just as good as the 5w (TEE CB2) that it kicked out of the bag.

One benefit of PW-2i set up is iron continuity from club to club which is helpful in a consistent set up as you switch between clubs. The setup of every longer iron than the previous just changes a little at a time. Visually everything is similar too. It may not amount to saved strokes but with more irons in the bag setup becomes a little more simple. I like just having driver, 3w and then all those irons on down the bag. And for the record I completely don't believe in the long irons being hard to hit malarkey.

So here is my 2i. I have named her 'Katana' and she is my #1 'ho in my bag of 'Porn Stars'. Our love affair has only just begun and I'm already smitten.
