  1. I'll let you know how Star Ranch is in a week. I'm playing in a scramble there next Saturday the 27th. We've had a lot of rain (10-12") the last several days, so the courses should be loving it and should be in tip top shape. Played Blackhawk yesterday and it does not drain well.. fairways had puddles and bunkers were filled it with water. Greens were good.. hopefully star ranch drains better, it should have recieved the same amount of rainfall
  2. Bill, are you playing in the rain? Got 6 inches this weekend the NW area, so haven't even attempted trying to head out.
  3. easy course.. need course knowledge to go low, but you will be playing with a member so that should not be an issue. Front 9 is flat and straight. Back 9 is tree lined and relatively tougher.. shot a 74 this morning (my best score after playing there regularly for 2 months) They have $25 guest fee's which includes cart fee on Tue, Wed & Th, so you should take advantage of that if you want to play prior to the tournament. Playing in that labor day tournament? I won't be playing.. weekend will be taken up with kid's soccer tournament

  5. When I was first just beginning golf last summer I was shooting in the 95-105 range and headed up to Colorado and promptly shot 88, 86 at two different courses. I really think your statement could be true where Texas golf just prepares you. At the time those were my best scores. I kind of wanna take a trip back up there and play those two courses now that my cap is <10 and see if I can really hammer them. I found I score better when playing out of state course when on vacation. For me it is a combination of not knowing the course (playing conservative) and also not swinging 90-100% wit
  6. I saw. Quarry is def a top course to play. It's amazing. Its the only course I've played in SA.. the holes inside the quarry reminded me of River Place in Austin..
  7. That answer would probably be Star Ranch. I braved Blackhawk last week....and that course has really turned the corner. It still has some rough spots in fairways...but tee boxes and greens are solid. If you haven't played it in awhile...you should check it out. Shadowglen also is on the upswing. It will always have those goofy holes (3, 7, 13)...but conditions are really good right now. They actually added a lake at the bend in 18 to toughen up that easy Par 5. Used to play @twilight there quite a bit, since it was close to work. i like their layout.. and if they have grass on the fair
  8. I enjoy walking on Lions.. but I like to play early or twilight.. else you are looking at 4.5-5+ hour rounds.. Not sure about the shape thou. Also, not sure if you are aware that the green fee on Austin city courses (clay/kizer/lions/mowilly etc) are valid for all day. So you can plan in the morning and walk on again in the evening with the same receipt. Or pay for a cart and ride in the evening..
  9. Played there and it's in amazing shape as you say. It's fantastic since the reno my coworkers say. Yep, heard they did a renovation 3 years ago. Wish some of the ATX course green keepers can go there and get some tips..
  10. Got some elevation, carry over water etc.. so does not play like 6000 yards... would play it more if it wasn't an hour+ drive for me..
  11. Anyone play Landa Park Golf Course in New Braunfels? The greens were fantastic.. better than any country club I've played in Austin. Rest of the course was in great shape as well.. and interesting layout with water and bunkers that can make it challenging on bad misses. Did I mention their fantastic greens?? It was 10/10.. not a bad spot on any of the 18 greens.. In the 50+ different of courses that I've played their greens would rank as #1 (at their current conditions)
  12. If anyone is interested to do a 3 month trial membership at Balcones CC, let me know or PM me for details. I did one in summer and ended up joining (mainly cause its a 5 minute drive).. They have a trial/preview for Fall and I can sponsor anyone that is interested in giving it a shot.
  13. I'd like to buy the TW15 in Sz 10 if anyone finds a pair at their store.
  14. Nice! congrats! I like that hole even thou i've hit my ball into the trees on the right many times :)
