1. Thank you. I was looking at that and the AW, and was actually considering a 52 wedge then 56 and 60, while tossing out the hybrids. I'm still considering the tours as well but not much feedback on those.
2. I did try them and not to disparage them, but I went with forgiveness over anything else. I'm just hoping the yardage gaps aren't an issue. It's probably not too late to try the tour variant, but would probably lose the forgiveness.
3. Sorry it's been a long time but I had to duck out of golf a while and I started playing again more frequently (IE. 1-2 times a week with the odd range session). I'll try to make this brief. I'm not concerned with my forged club obsession any longer. Nor the brand name. Just scoring. That's it. I have 714 AP2's (forged, cavities). They are okay, but not forgiving enough for me. I posted a current handicap and I think it's a 12. For me I know getting short game back will help... we all know this stuff but my irons are killing me from 150 out. I'm getting dispersion issues, but the big deal k
4. I wasn't going to post this but this particular thread brings some truth to what I felt in going through testing both the AP1 and AP 2 (714): The worst thing that is going to happen to the new 714 AP1 is the new AP 2. I was positive I was going to walk out of the store with AP1's, especially after the thread with the low handicappers all over them. After my own testing (NOT all things were equal: The shafts were the default shafts), the AP 2 is so forgiving, there's no need at all for AP 1's unless you want more yardage. The AP 1 is a VERY fine club, but the AP 2 will kill its sales. The
5. This is a fascinating topic and one I have never considered in all my instruction... from various schools of thought, it NEVER came up. Interesting. I am 6'1" (apparently a midget compared to the rest of you). I am strong, thick chested, but I believe I have short arms (don't know for sure). BUT something I found interesting is whenever I have a PING "static" fitting with the PING rep, he tells me I should be looking at 2* upright or more! When I hit on the lie board, he tells me I may need flat clubs, and I personally aim for the PING blacks (Standard) so that I'm not too flat! So here
6. I say this only because it's something I note on myself... too restrictive hip turn going back (I know others said it too). I LOVE the length of his backswing. He stops going back just before things can get timing crucial. I'm guessing he still has great distance. I don't think he does pull off the ball that much. With driver I see it, but you can get away with it for some extra oomph. His irons look tight, with a great upper body turn and controlled backswing. That's my professional amateur opinion... I like it a lot. You must be pretty proud. Great work!
7. After a year with my Mizuno 825 pro's I was 110% sure I was going to bag the AP 1 714's. Then I saw the AP 2 714's and all bets were off.... but still.. .those AP1's have to be stupidly forgiving. Then I hit the MP-54's.... I hit them as good as anything else. If there was one time in my life I was hoping for a hosel rocket it was then. But no, instead I had everything I want out of a club... repeatable ball flight, trajectory, and controllable distance with a nice dash of feel. What a merry go round. I've matured though... 3 years ago I would have bought all three sets and ebayed the 'l
8. My Mizuno wedges. Frankly I just replace with the same model every year for fresh grooves. I personally do not understand the Vokey love. I really just don't get it. They aren't bad, but the Mizuno's feel amazing, and the versatility in the grind, and head shape.... I have failed to find anything easier to hit from heavy sand, light sand, super tight flop shots, etc, you name it. 913D2 is a driver I just hit so much.... 'cleaner' than any other one I think my entire bag could change and that would be the last club you could pry from my hands. I stepped on the head late this season... I am
9.
Decided to hit both the mp54 and 712 ap2 today at the range (6 irons off the mats). Both with KBS stiff shafts. No data. But the mp54 won in all categories for me. Flight, carry, and especially feel. The ap2 felt almost 'harsh' in comparison. To me the shape of the ap2 head also makes it appear smaller and inspires a little less confidence. I am 99% sold on the 54s unless I feel a marked difference in the 714s. Different strokes for different folks!
I actually did a similar test, but here's the thing... I think the 712 AP2 m
Yeah these threads always go bad. For some reason this and iron covers get people the most fired up.
Iron covers? That's it, you just made my ignore list pal. ... lol. j/k.
11. Tmax, First off thanks for doing this. It's super helpful and insightful. Secondly, stupid question time: The steel fiber is that the AP 1 stock shaft? IE: The True Temper XP 95 ? Because if so, from your descriptions, it seems like I (we) can save some real coin by just going with that shaft. Personally I was going to stick KBS Tour stiffs in, but at 10 bucks a stick (Canadian), that's a bit stiff. (pun intended). I have a 6 iron speed right around yours (82-85MPH) and my Nippon 905 reg's hit a bit too high. I have a slower tempo, slower transition and I am thinking if what you're say
