I feel like I’ve lost between 10-15 yards on every club in the past 12-18 months. Same equipment, pretty much same swing etc. I just turned 37 and I’m in decent to good shape, not like I’ve lost muscle or flexibility......this has confounded me though. I never really recorded my swing speed previously so don’t really have anything to compare it to. Has this happened to anyone else in their 30s? I figured a loss of distance wouldn’t happen for another 7-10 years.

About two months ago I went in and got fit for iron shafts as it had been about 3 years since my last fitting. While I had no intention of buying new irons I did want to try the MP-18 MBs and SCs as well as the z785. I really liked the profile of the MP-18s compared to Mizuno’s I had tested in the past such as the MP-4s, MP-5s, and the JPX 900 Ts. The amount of, or lack of offset in the MP-18s was what really caught my attention. For reference my current gamers were the z745s with DG S400s. My fitter (Puetz Golf in Seattle) had the Mizuno shaft optimizer so I gave that a try and it spat out 3 different shaft recommendations: DG X100, KBS C-Taper 130X, and the Project X 6.5s. A little background, handicap is currently sitting at a 6 with a 6 iron SS of 91-92 mph and definitely more on the steeper side swing wise. I hit all three heads with all 3 shafts and then my current irons up against those. I had hit the C-Tapers before and knew they were too much shaft for me so I left them out and instead hit the Project X LZ 6.5s. I also did not post the MP-18 SC numbers as they were negligible compared to the MB as was the feel and forgiveness (in my opinion). The numbers: I hit 5 balls with each set up. All done through Trackman off of a mat (I know not the most optimal). Just carry average numbers in this post . I didn’t get a full print out for spin, launch angle, etc. but the MP-18s spun more (around 200 rpms) for me no matter the shaft but not that surprising due to the lofts being weaker. MP-18 MB • MP-18 MB 6 iron w/ X100: Carry average was 180 • MP-18 MB 6 iron w/ PX 6.5: Carry average was 179 • MP-18 MB 6 iron w/ PX LZ 6.5: Carry average was 181 Srixon z785 • z785 6 iron w/ X100: Carry average was 184 • z785 6 iron w/ PX 6.5: Carry average was 182 • z785 6 iron w/ PX LZ 6.5: Carry average was 184 Srixon z745 w/ S400 • z745 6 iron w/ S400: Carry average was 184 I came away surprised that I didn’t lose much in terms of yardage as the MP-18s are anywhere from 1 to 2 degrees weak compared to the Srixon’s. Of all the shaft/head combos I hit I had the best dispersion with MP-18s with the x100s (and in my eyes the best ball flight, the S400s did go a bit high at times), followed closely by my z745s with the S400s, then the MP-18s with the LZ 6.5s and then the z785 with the PX LZ 6.5s next in line. I will say the LZ’s felt amazing and I had great numbers with them and will be a consideration the next time I get fit for irons. What ultimately came of this was me buying a combo set of MP-18’s (4&5 SC, 6-PW MB) with X100s and selling the z745s. My reason for switching? The slightly better dispersion numbers but mainly the eye appeal of looking down at an iron that had very minimal offset and an overall great profile. After about two months of playing the irons I started to come to the realization that the X100s were just a bit too stiff for me. Or more so that I felt I had to focus on loading the shaft much more than I did with the S400s. I also noticed a little more resistance in turf interaction compared the z745s. Fast forward to today. The MP-18s have been sold and the z745s with the S400s are back in the bag. Why? Two main reasons. First, the shafts and second the sole. I had always thought that the “Tour VT” sole helped, especially for a steeper swing, but I didn’t realize how much I would notice the difference. I will say I did consider pulling the trigger on the z785’s but got extremely lucky and found a new set of z745s on the bay and I still prefer the shape and slightly less offset compared to the z785s (or the z765s for that matter). Hopefully this helps someone who was in the same position as I was a couple months ago. I have no bad things to say about the MP-18 line they are fantastic irons and I think the best looking of any current blade/SC offering that isn’t National Custom Works (someday haha). That being said, if I were to do it all again I would have stayed with my current set up or maybe even experimented with making the switch to the LZ shafts with the same heads. But again all of the numbers between those and the S400s were negligible that I didn’t see the point in dropping $300 dollars just to re-shaft my irons.

All research and demo use have led me into this upgrade. Adding clubs each month. These clubs are awesome, I am a believer now in Callaway, long, tight dispersion, great ball flight , and good shots if mishit occurs. Very workable, Anyone else a fan of these? Have added a PW, thinking about AW,SW,LW, how do they perform?

I've heard that these irons cannot be bent to a flatter/taller lie because of the black finish. Please tell me this isn't true!!! I am about to splurge on these beauties but not tall enough to swing standard. Anybody have issues with this?

Hello WRXers, I haven't posted in a while since moving to Okinawa. However; I am in the need of some opinions and advice regarding shaft options. For almost a month, I have been using an indoor launch monitor at a local shop (Foresight) to test and record shot data using various heads, shafts, and lie adjustments. My goal is to narrow down a better shaft than what I play now, DGS300. In my opinion the flight is too low, and the spin is too low. I also am looking for a lighter shaft as well (less taxing on the body). Of course, I'm limited in options to try, basically only the Mizuno Fit Cart (and being it is Japan, they don't have x flex in every shaft model either). Below is the data I've recorded from the shop (averaged based on all shots of course). Also, for those who will ask, the same MMC head was used with all shafts. 1. Shaft, Club Speed, Ball Speed, Launch, Carry, Total, Offline 2. Nippon 105s, 77.25, 105, 20.8, 143, 155, -6 3. Nippon 120s, 73.75, 100.25, 20.2, 139, 155, -16 4. Nippon 120x, 74.5, 101.25, 21.9, 137, 148, 4 5. Nippon 125x, 71.75, 97.5, 20.3, 132, 147, -8 From what I've learned, the fastest and longest is the 105s. The most accurate is 120x. When it comes to feel, the 105s feels a tad too light (even the employees say its too light). The 120s feels the most fluid. The 125x is very taxing and heavy. When using an x flex shaft however, the dispersion seems to be far tighter and more centered (less offline). Oddly enough the Mizuno 3d shaft optimizer (3 times now as the #1) has recommended 125x shaft (hince why it is listed). Also in the top 5 is 120x and 120s. Unfortunitly, the fit cart doesn't have a 105x, and I've been to 3 locations hoping someone had it. Which leads me to my question. The 120s and 105x weigh virtually the same. So is the 105x a good shaft to consider or is a shaft I've already tested good enough? Since I can't try it out for here I hope the WRX community could provide some feedback. My thoughts are the flight pattern of the 105x will mimic the 105s (same L profile, launch, and spin characteristics), the feel will mimic the 120s (same weight), and I should see my offline move more to center along with a smaller dispersion (as observed by using stiffer shaft). Also if you have any other recommendations that would give a higher launch and a bit more spin please feel free to recommend away. Thank you all very much for your feedback.

After testing different sets of irons and shafts, I notice that I prefer the feel of non-stepped iron shafts. I am not sure what it is, but when swinging stepped shafts I feel like I lose the club in the back swing and have to be very deliberate in transition to find the feeling again. Non-Stepped shafts have a much more solid feel, and I feel the energy transfer through the shaft and into impact better. Would love to hear anyone else's feelings about these types of shafts. For reference, the stepped shafts I have been testing are S300's, S400's and X100's. Non-stepped shafts I have been testing are CTapers, Project X 6.0/6.5

Hard to part ways with these beauties, but I am going to be playing much less golf with baby #1 on the way and I don't have the time to devote to perfecting my swing enough to use these butter knifes! Irons have about 10 rounds/practice sessions of use and look like new. No bag chatter or visible blemishes at all. These are equipped with MCC +4 grips and DG s300 shafts. Standard loft/lie/length. **Asking for $800 shipped obo.**

I’m wanting to get into club/putter restoration and refinishing. Just picked up a bench grinder and some buffing/polishing wheels. Where do I start? What clubs or putter models are best to start out with? What are some good putter finishes to begin with? Etc. Any tips I could use for starting out would be greatly appreciated.

I am looking to change the shaft in my 4 iron. I play ns pro modus 120 stiff shafts in my z585 5-pw. I am considering switching to graphite for my 4 iron. I have noticed a lot of pros are using graphite in their longest iron and/or utility iron. Any suggestions on where to begin my search for a graphite shaft? I see Louis O plays the Project X HZRDUS Red Hybrid 85 in his 3 iron. Thoughts on Aldila nv, vs, or nvs proto by you 75-85? UST? Grafalloy pro launch? I guess my question is what is the best utility .355 tip affordable shaft? Brand and/or model? @75-95 gram shaft. My ss for driver is @105 mph. Hdcp=8 Thanks!!

Hey all, I need a bit of help. So I’ve been playing golf for nearly 20 years, since age 10, and have never had a proper iron fitting. Currently playing cobra pro cb/mb with project x 6.0 that were released in 2008/2009. They’ve worked for me but now I feel I’m in a spot financially to upgrade my irons. So I got fitted at local shop that came highly recommended. Going into the fitting I was a bit nervous because I’ve been working through some swing faults. After working through my 7 iron, the fitter first started by trying to zero in on my shaft. Ended up the project x 6.0 was perfect for my swing. Now the head, eventually settled on Callaway apex pro with titleist t100s being a close second. Numbers showed I had the lowest spin without giving up distance on apex pro. Initially I was shocked, I wasn’t really looking at the apex pro going into the fitting. I had been thinking about maybe titleist, mizuno or taylormade. Since the fitting I’ve been watching and reading videos on apex pro, and reviews are good. I’m torn between apex pro and t100. Here was problem with fitting, I didn’t try any cobra heads, jpx919, t100 head wasn’t in the shop (from what I’ve read there is a difference between t100 and t100s), and taylormade p730 was just discontinued. My thought is to go to a different fitter, thinking Haggin Oaks in Sacramento area, and try again. In the mean time, I’m still working on my confidence with irons and trying to schedule a lesson. Any advice you have would be great!
