Marc Leishman On 18 - 260 Out, Down 2, and Layup?

18th hole scoring average = 4.81

Par 5, 570 yards

4 eagles
97 birdies
173 pars
28 bogeys
9 doubles
0 others

Sure, it was a low percentage shot, but he could have pulled it off.

Given the decision he made, I'm going to suggest that Mark disagrees with you.

I don't know how far he hits his 3 wood but 260 is a long way from the rough!

Holding that green would have been basically impossible and even if he did he would have been highly unlikely to be able to get it close enough to have a real go at it.

In the end he did the right thing I think T2 nice pay cheque and some world ranking points, rather than dumping it in the water making bogey and being in a tie for 6th.

If he'd dunked it in the water someone would have started a topic saying "Leishman on 18 what an idiot!!".

If he keeps playing the way he did this week he will have plenty of chances to win, just needs to get that putter to behave!!

This is dumb. It can be solved with a simple theoretical bet of the earnings he would have been gambling with: roughly $170,000

I bet you $170,000 that you have to either get up and down from 260 yards in the rough, OR you have to hole out a sub-100 yard wedge shot. Which do you take? It's a no brainer my friends.

Edit: this is also on the 18th at Torrey in the same conditions. No question you hit the wedge...

The only chumps here are armchair caddies, OP.
No doubt.

The shot requires a 255+ yard CARRY over water. At sea level. With ambient temperature dropping. From an iffy lie in the rough. Anyone on the bag who recommends that shot is not going to be on that bag very long.

I don't think there were any eagles on Sunday, except for one wedge jarred from the fairway, but hey, Leishman birdied the hole. What a knucklehead!

I assume you mean in this situation with water in front... no brainer for sure. Not many people can fly a 3 wood 260 yards from the rough when its getting cooler late in the day like it was.... not many people can fly a 3 wood 260 period. I don't think there was anyone in the field that could fly it 260 at that point in the day from the lie he had.

No water in front then getting up and in from 260 is much better odds than holing a random wedge shot.

The only person that would probably try it is a 20 handicap with his mates 'yeah i'll just hit my 3 wood as hard as i can'

Every scratch player will be thinking about what yardage they'd like for their third shot.

Silly ego driven risky shots are why most people never make single figure handicaps.

Just saying, before the keyboard warriors kick off ;)

Just for the record I'm not far removed from a 20 handicap and wouldn't even think about trying a "Sunday best" 3 wood over water all carry.

I know some people who would but not me!

I also know a 5 handicap who would definitely give it a go!

Stanley got screwed by low rough that didn't hold the ball after he hit the green with lots of spin. He played a wedge. No?

Tiger or Phil would have went for it. Leishman is a chump.
Didn't Phil have a very similar situation on the same exact hole with a very similar pin position on Sunday to win with Eagle and he chose to lay up and try to hole out from wedge distance. Could have sworn they played that highlight with bones tending the flag from 80-100 and Phil trying to hole out for eagle.

They did indeed play a replay of that, I think around the time he was taking the cart path drop

Phil had a similar shot two years ago and chose to lay up and try to hole out the wedge.
He did and I remember it because he had bones tend the flag. Phil's lie was terrible though when he laid up. You don't think Phil would have gone for it in Leishman's situation. Think about what he did at Augusta out of the pine needles. Second place doesn't mean much to Phil at this point in his career. Just look at his US Open record.

I was sitting in a fairway tent on 18 all afternoon. Horschel was right in front of me when he holed out that shot. This thread is absurd, Leishman was not laying up for a birdie and accepting second place.
A wedge to the slope behind the pin that spun towards the hole WAS HIS BEST CHANCE AT EAGLE and a playoff. Guys were coming close all afternoon, and Horschel pulled it off.
Every player that went for it sailed the green on the right side, and had to scramble for birdie. Andres Romero made an incredible up and down from the left bunker, but that was still for birdie. A lot of guys from the middle of the fairway and about 260 out were not even clearing the water.

I think the much better question was why did Pat Perez lay up from 245 in the middle of the fairway when he needed eagle to tie.
True. Just looked at shotracker.

Jason day had 237 he went for it and had an eagle putt. Perez had 245 and layed up. 2nd place is a win for most of them.

looks like we was playing not to win. He obviously doesn't subscribe to the famous Reese Bobby motto...."IF YOU AIN'T 1ST....YOUR LAST

to me, if you're a rookie or guy who will work hard to keep your card... Lay Up and finish 2nd.

but if you're a top 25 guy who has their card secured for next year and $$$ isn't an issue.. Then like Herm Edwards says. YOU PLAY TO WIN GAME. YOU GOTTA SWING THE 3 WOOD.

Perez's third shot ended up 2 ft from the pin, Jason Day's third shot ended up 5 feet. Who came closer to making an eagle?
