Marc Leishman On 18 - 260 Out, Down 2, and Layup?

He was off to the right and had a good angle. Could have hit a draw in there and run it to the middle of the green or chipped from the right side rough. He didn't have to carry 260. The announcer said 260 to the flag. Coming from the rough he should have expected some run out anyway.
If he thought he could have gone for it and pulled off the shot, I'm sure he would have. We have no idea exactly what his lie was like, how he was feeling about the shot, etc. My thought is that if he had the ability to hit a fairway wood 260 to a pin tucked front left, just over water, out of the rough, he probably also had the ability to hit his tee shot in the fairway, giving him a much better chance of going for it. Since he didn't do that, I agree completely with his rational decision of laying up. Being aggressive and trying to win is one thing, being stupid is another.

About $200k is the difference between where he finished, and where he could have finished if things went wrong.

Two hundred thousand dollars for two stinking shots. I say he did the right thing.

eh , even if he was able to carry the water 260 and get it on the green , then hit the putt , or hole a chip from around the green

I have to think the odds would be the about same if not even a bit easier to hole that layup shot from money distance with a backstop ... I saw lots of guys getting it pretty close with the pw/ sw in hand using the slope ...

I think its the right call in that situation

The only person that would probably try it is a 20 handicap with his mates 'yeah i'll just hit my 3 wood as hard as i can'

Every scratch player will be thinking about what yardage they'd like for their third shot.

Silly ego driven risky shots are why most people never make single figure handicaps.

Just saying, before the keyboard warriors kick off ;)
Just for the record I'm not far removed from a 20 handicap and wouldn't even think about trying a "Sunday best" 3 wood over water all carry.

I know some people who would but not me!

I also know a 5 handicap who would definitely give it a go!
"Guys I'll just wait a few minutes for the green to be free"...

...shanks it in the bush 50mt away...

We all have been there...
I go for it!

Just be thinking...just a nice fade here...

Stanley got screwed by low rough that didn't hold the ball after he hit the green with lots of spin. He played a wedge. No?

Tiger or Phil would have went for it. Leishman is a chump.
Didn't Phil have a very similar situation on the same exact hole with a very similar pin position on Sunday to win with Eagle and he chose to lay up and try to hole out from wedge distance. Could have sworn they played that highlight with bones tending the flag from 80-100 and Phil trying to hole out for eagle.
They did indeed play a replay of that, I think around the time he was taking the cart path drop

Day had a much worse angle in to the green and he went for it. Day is NOT a chump.
I think Day was about 220 out, so he could get an iron on it which allows for a steeper landing angle (lands softer) and allow it to hold the green (which it barely did). Day also had a better lie which allowed for more spin on the ball. Different situation for sure so bringing that into the discussion shouldn't have much merit.

It's ok to to say that Leishman's decision may have had a lot of validity to it. You asked Champ or Chump.... A lot of information here identifies he was far from a Chump. Can't say he is a Champ either since he isn't holding the trophy. After that, it's just bickering...

Maybe the immediate paycheck wasn't a concern for him, maybe he wanted to get the FedEx points for the much bigger payday on down the road??

And I disagree with your worst case scenario that had him walking out of there with bogey, he could have made a zillion on the hole with a bad break trying to muscle a 3 wood out of the rough, late in the day, all over water. I totally agree with the layup and THAT giving him the best chance to make an eagle, 3 wood at best goes long over the green and then he's chipping back down towards the water for eagle. I'd take 100 yards and a backstop in that case.

Worst case scenario: He ducks it in the water, pitches up, and one putts for par. That pays $190,116.67.
I humbly disagree.

Yours sincerely,

Kyle Stanley

But seriously, 260+ out (all carry), in the rough, with a front pin tucked over water and with the cold evening air that was killing distance. I know this is WRX and all but WTF? Who on earth questions that? Virtually nobody on Tour has that shot in the bag

if you can't hit the shot you can't hit the shot, and there is no sense going for it. It's like asking your kicker to attempt a game winning field goal into a breeze when he doesn't have enough leg to get it there. If that's the case you have to try the hail mary. I doubt Leishman didn't know the situation, and he's made around 1M or more the last 3 years and was coming off a 230K check at the sony, so i don't think it's fair to assume he's chasing money.

Leishman did play to win. No one eagled all day with a putter. Best chance to win was holing a wedge. It seemed safe, but in reality a smart decision. It was an easy decision actually.
Why are you so stuck on landing soft? Leishman has a 2 hybrid which can easily make the center of the green by rolling it up there. What's the landing soft all about? The guy had a great lie with the ball slightly above his feet. He can easily carry that club 245-250 and roll it up there. How hard is that to understand?

Perez just wimped out totally. 245 to the pin from the middle of the fairway. He was hitting his 3 hybrid at least that all day.

Why risk 2nd place money right? Perez and Leishman would probably fold pocket Aces in a 10 player sit-n-go because they don't want to go all in. That's obvious.

Stallings could have layed up. He went for it and won. Big difference.

i remember a couple of years ago when Kyle Stanley layed up and made the 8 and eventually lost, he got roasted fr not going for it. Some people were convinced it was impossible to make an 8 by going for it, despite the fact that if you've played the game long enough you know anything can happen. I'm sure you'd never expect a pro to make a 16 but Kevin Na did.

Anyway, a few tournaments after another pro had 2-3 shot lead heading into the 18th, layed up and won ( i think it may have been Mickelson at Pebble, where he won by 2 and the closing hole is a par 5).

But i mean, mostly when it comes to armchair quarterbacking, "right" and "wrong" is too often judged only by negative results. Very rarely do we look at successes and think about how it could have backfired, but every tournament is filled with shots that you could've played another way. There's an awful lot of grey between "right" and "wrong" decision

Big difference for amateurs, not pro's. Pro's can hit 2U real far.

This guy is hitting the same club Leishman has. Titleist 712U Iron 250-268. Depending how you play it. Does anyone grip down .25 or .5 inches anymore?
