Best Hidden Gems of Myrtle?

Armypilot84

Recommended Posts

My dad and I are going to Myrtle in April, during Masters weekend. We are doing a package deal and staying in Calabash and playing five rounds at the "Big Cat" courses (Lions Paw, Leopards Chase, etc.). We wanted to get one or two more extra rounds in at other courses while we are there. I was wondering if anybody has any suggestions on good, but not crazy expensive courses to play? Hidden gems that may not get the publicity of Caledonia, and TPC Myrtle.

P.S. The Barefoot Courses are not an option because Mike and Mike have their huge "Monday after The Masters" tournament, and I imagine they will be closed in preparation for that.

Heathers Glen and Glen Dornach-http://www.glensgolfgroup.com/myrtle-beach-golf-courses/glen-dornoch/
River's Edge-http://www.river18.com/

These are in the area you are staying and usually get good reviews.

Great Bay is just North of Myrtle. Nicklaus track. Nice set up. Never really crowded. Crow Creek is another good one. So is Leaopard's Chase. All up in NC in Calabash. Also places like Oyster Bay up there. Can't go wrong with that either. Tidewater is unbelievable. Glenn Dornoch is also a nice place to try out.

Crow Creek used to be considered a hidden gem, nice course and condition but is getting a bit over-booked. Tidewater is great, best to play in am before afternoon breezes come up. Oyster Bay and River's Edge are nice, avoid River's Edge on Wednesday am as there tends to be a local money game that if you get stuck behind, slowwww going.

Personally one course if you're looking for a cheap option that is stil solid is River Hills. I like the layout, some tight fairways but some really interesting and fun holes. It has been in good condition both times I played as well. Oyster bay can be played for a good price but expect it to be crowded and slow. If you don't mind driving down highway 501, MBN Southcreek and MBN West course are solid and very well priced.

Oyster Bay, Thistle, River's Edge, Cape Fear National. Tidewater always seems to have condition issues.
Thistle is a GREAT track. All three 9's are very nice but if he is looking to keep price down I can't imagine they run too many specials in April

Right around the corner from the Big Cats. The Pearl. 2 good courses and a nice 36 hole day. If you only play one play the West Course.
Oyster Bay is also a good choice.
Thistle is nice.
Rivers Edge if you are ready for some tough holes along the water.

Tidewater and Thistle look great but they are a little bit more than I was looking to spend for these additional rounds. They are both over $110 during the time period I will be down there. If I'm going to spend that much I would probably just bite the bullet and play Caledonia. It is my fault. I should have clarified the specific price range I was looking for. Are there any courses you can recommend in the $75 range? Thanks for the suggestions so far. Keep them coming.

Like I said, River Hills or the Myrtle Beach National South and West courses definitely fit your price range and are solid tracks IMO. I would also look at Wild Wing, conditions can be hit or miss but it is a very fun layout that is easy to score on. If you didn't mind driving south to Litchfield or Pawleys Island, River Club or Tradition would be good options but they might be a little more than 75$ at that time.
You mean Long Bay up on Hwy 9 in Longs don't you?
For some older courses on the north end of the strand that are older courses
Eagle's Nest
Beachwood
Possum Trot
Azalia Sands
these are older courses most built in the 70s I do not know what kind of shape they are in> It can vary These are not on the mainstream vacation packages. I don't get on the North end of the strand too much any more because I have 6 courses within 5 miles of my house on this end and it is less miles for me to go to Litchfield or Pawleys Island

What about True Blue? We played there using one of the Myrtle booking sites and the greens fee was really reasonable for the condition. I think it was MBN.

Boom I can't imagine that would fall into the $75 price range... But cheers to the Dunes Club. IMO it is the only REAL tour caliber golf course down here. Definitely a must play

Heritage and the River Club on Pawley's Island. Heritage is very similar to Caledonia at 1/2 the price and without the pretension. River Club is just a really nice layout.

A number of the names being given are way down South. That is 60 miles from where you are located for the other rounds. There are more than enough solid choices at the North end that you should not have to drive that far.

bruinspat.......tour caliber? Not Barefoot Dye? Not TPC?
Barefoot Dye is a close second IMO. TPC could be but I haven't played it when it is in top shape. Dunes Club to me just has a feeling that is different than the rest. Obviously that is just my opinion, many others would certainly disagree.

These choices make a lot of sense since the OP is already staying in that area near the big cats. I love the holes near the Marsh at Pearl - really pretty - also those finishing holes at River's Edge are amazing with the water on the right. I think it is #17 a dog leg right where if you play it too safe you will hit it through the fairway and into some back yards but if you try and cut off too much over the water you won't make it.

Long Bay. My mistake. Thistle is a very nice place too. Sea Trail is a less expensive place with 3 nice courses as well. The Farmstead or Homestead, forget which one it is, is also a less expensive track that is fun.

I will second that. Definitely go check out the Pro-Am on Monday at Barefoot Dye Club if you can. It is a great time and seeing the celebs and ams hack it up next to pros is entertaining.

If you play Sea Trail ONLY play the Jones Course. The others are not real good even at a low price. They have had some real financial struggles the last five years and it shows.
