Most Under/Overrated Golf Company

Recommended Posts

Overrated: Cameron - I've owned six or seven, and my wife still plays one. They are pretty, but the performance does not justify the price. Also, oversized iron heads. I love perimeter weighting, but the bigger head is more of a hinderance than a help IMO.

Underrated: Sonartec fw's, nothing feels as solid. TP Mills, finally a heavier head in 35" lengths.

Underrated - Heavy Putter - Everyone of you reading this is a club whore, you wouldn't be in this forum if you weren't. This is the best club you've never tried.

YUP!

Tried, did not like it...hurt my arm while throwing it. I need to add this putter line-up to my most hated putter thread.

Wow what a great topic. My opinion is they are all great companies, it's just a matter of preference. I would like to see the demographics on who is voting here because it would make this topic that more interesting. I think that a lot of times though, people misconstrue over-rated to over-exposed. With company's like TM and Nike that have so much money to spend on players and advertising they do get over exposed a lot which deter many golfers to say their equipment is overrated. It's funny how people form an opinion just by the name too. A friend of mine refuses to play Nike because he doesn't want to swing a shoe. I won't play Bridgstone because I don't want to swing a tire. For how stupid that sounds, and it is, in one way or another we all judge companies and form opinions without even hitting their equipment first.

I have to agree with MARKMCNULTYFAN. Although I hate to admit it, Titleist does make some mighty fine clubs, expecially the 695 CB and the 735's. Great performers that tend to be under-rated.

And alot of guys have mentioned Srixon. I have never seen a finer club than the relatively unknown Pro 100's. The I-506's are easy to hit and soft as butter. Love the w-506 driver. Macgregor is a under the radar as well and the M675 is blade that almost anyone can play well and that MacTec is the longest driver that I have ever hit.

But my favorite underdog has to be the Ben Hogan line which is slipping in popularity every year, even though the quality of the forgings is 1st rate. Golf wouldn't be golf without a set of Hogans hanging around somewhere. I just bought a new set of FTX's to replace my old Apex blades.

Overrated - Driver: Taylormade (Biggest budget - biggest payouts0

Irons: Nike slingshot (if you play em, I apologize)

Hybrids: Hogan Edge (Give em credit for blazing the way)

Putter: Titleist Futura (see anyone on tour anymore?)

and many of the Odessesys

Underrated: Driver: SMT 455

Irons: Tommy Armour 2006 Forged Silver Scot Blades

Fairway Woods: Cobra SZ series Taylor made V-Steel

Putter: Golfology Octagon Putters (the original heavy putter

before anyone knew about heavy putters)

I base my overrated and underated on personal experience of myself and my competitors in tournament play and not by advertising dollars and amount of sales.

For example: A lot of people I play in tournaments are using 425 TM drivers and with good results - so in that sense not overrated but is that because they flood market and spend so many advertising dollars? I have never seen one used in LD competition and if the head was that good, you would see them a bunch because LD guys are more particular than regular pros - their very existence depends on it. Almost no one is using Nike or placing with Nike. Never seen a competitor using slingshots but have seen most using Titleist CB or simaler. A lot of Cameron putters so not overrated or underrated becuase that is what most use that are winning - Haven't seen futuras in 2 years.

I think there is something no one has addressed yet (and if they have, I apologize.) We have golfers of every size, shape, color and ability - that is a given. But we also have golfers of every NATION. So I'm willing to bet that what someone says is "overrated" in one country might be a huge difference to us in America. I know for a fact if you ask someone from America and someone from Europe that same question, you'll probably get different answers (ditto for the rest of the world.)

So please remember this when you read a post from someone and you think they might have lost their mind. ;)

Over rated companies:

- Taylor Made --- just on their marketing practice alone, multiple iterations of the same driver, again and again. And saying that even though I have T-M fairway wood and hybrids.

- Cameron - nice putters, way to pricey, way too much kool-aid behind them

Underrated

- Bridgestone

-Srixon

Both have some terrific clubs and golf balls, both of which perform well. I play the Srixon URS ball and it is terrific.

- Adams - nice mix of clubs that perform well.

Over rated;

TM woods> Yes, you bought the driver count again by having 400 players on staff. Congratulations!

Cameron putters> Standard headweights with regards to shaft length. This does not fly for that amount of coin.

The Prov1/x> There are a ton of balls on the market that are every bit as good.

Anything tour> It is the same stuff 80% of the time, just bent and hotmelted.

Matrix shafts> The price is purely a marketing technique. It's a $1,000 shaft, it must be the best right? Wrong. Tell half the tour that plays V2's or Graphite design (FW's).

Under rated;

Wilson staff> Sleepers. The Fi5, Pi5 and Ci6 irons are fantastic, as is the PX3 ball. Wedges are very nice as well. Woods may (hopefully) be starting to turn around. Going way down market for a while just killed them.

Srixon> Everyone who tries their irons has good things to say. They just need some lefty availability (hint, hint). Excellent ball line.

Nike> Many people just don't like them and have automatic negative reactions to their equipment because of this. They make some very fine clubs.

Most overrated is Titleist. The perception that Titleist makes equipment for the better player is just baloney.

Most underrated is Adams. But Adams is partly to blame because they don't pay the kind of money needed to get the exposure on the PGA Tour. The reality is nobody cares what equipment they are using on the Senior Tour.

O.R= Nike and TM

U.R= Bridgestone and Srixon

Nike is a giant marketing machine; definitely haven't produced in the quality or looks department if you ask me. TM is the blacksheep of the OEM world; started the demise with their excelerated discounting, rapid turnover and dumping campaigns. TP line saved them with the better player and boy did they charge us for it.

Overrated: Taylormade and some Titleist. Why? Taylormade's history of cranking out new clubs so often, while most of them are just sligh expansions of one another...i.e. r7 line-up. Mostly titleist golf balls are over-rated, I really like the v1, which seems to be the ball of choice but give other titleist balls a try, such as the NXT tour, a great ball. So is the Pinnacle Exception, which is not a *titleist* ball ut is still part of the Acushnet family.

Underrated: Mizuno woods, wilson staff, nike and Cobra. For all of you supposed *players* out their with your 110+ swing speed, give them a try. The new Cobra Speed Pro wood line is awesome, as well as their carbon cb. The woods even come with a real VS proto. The Wilson Fi5 is amazing, just give it a try, very square shape with great feel. Mizuno woods should fit perfectly into your bags guys, since you always seem to be saying that you hook everything off the planet, well here you go, dead square faces if not even a bit open, fwy's have a heavy shaft and the stock stiff driver shaft (exsar blue) frequencies well into X (i did it myself). The nike line is great, try and tell me the CCI forged does not have a thin topline and feels just as good as any Mizuno IMO. The new drivers sit dead square, but the guy who needs a *taditional head to look at because he gets queasy w/o one* get the SQ tour, dead square head and deep clubface, just as good as any titleist club.

Taylormade R510TP - Speeder 757 Sonartec NP-99 14* and 17* - NV Green 85 Nickent Genex 3DX 21* - Dynamic Gold SL Titleist 660 4-P - Dynamic Gold Cleveland 54* and 59* - Dynamic Gold Scotty Cameron Teryllium
