Dry cleaning a golf bag

Recommended Posts

I have a strange question, can you get a golf bag dry cleaned?

I have an older ping hoofer bag that is constructed of a dark blue cloth material....it is really dirty and needs a serious cleaning...the thought of doing it by hand is daunting and my wife mentioned dry cleaning....does anyone have any experience with this?

I just dropped my white 2013 XH stand bag at a local "mom and pop" dry-cleaners

She told me if she couldn't send it throught the dry-cleaning dept. that she would do it by hand and get it looking new again.

I'll report back when I see th efinished product.

I was planning on calling. I just was curious if anyone has tried this before. What about a handheld steam cleaner?
[/quote] Good idea. Might want to try that first, and if it works you could save some money. I never had anything dry cleaned but believe it is not cheap.

I don't see what the big deal is to wash it yourself. I've picked up a lot of used bags over the years. With the dirty ones I'll use the garden hose on it to get it good and wet then squirt some laundry detergent on it and scrub it with a scrub brush. After scrubbing it I'll let it soak for a while then I hose it off and let it dry. For what a dry cleaner probably will charge I'd try that first. Mine always turn out real nice.

Hand washing isn't that bad, just a bit messy. I washed an old bag that I had retired to experiment with. I rubbed detergent water inside and out and also used a stiff nylon brush and then hosed it thoroughly. That was the fun part because the water that washed out was black. I didn't know the bag was that dirty. I let it dry in the shade for two days and the bag came out looking new again. I've since done the same to all my bags, just to have them ready for use in case of need. :)

I do the same thing. Works very well! I did that to a very old Sunday bag that the guy threw in with my $9 set of Haig Ultras. The bag looked pretty pathetic, but after washing, looked very nice. Used it off and on for a couple years until it fell apart.

Take it to a Self Car Wash. The hose has high pressure soap, wax, and rinse.

That seems like a good idea. Even better yet borrow a pressure washer from a friend. Most have a low pressure nozzle you can use to apply a cleaner then switch to one of the pressure heads to actually clean. Just be careful you don't get the head to close to the bag or it will damage it. If they are powerful enough to put a groove in stone or concrete imagine what they can do to nylon or other similar material.

Maybe after you clean it treat it with a silicone waterproof spray. Not only will it make it water resistant it will help it to repel dirt and make minor cleanups easier. I just got a new bag from my parents as an early Christmas gift and think I will do this to keep it looking nice.

I was just wondering...

I got this super Mizuno stand bag out of a dumpster I go to for free boxes (and free...golf stuff...I guess...lol) and the bag is fantastic...but it smells like a chainsmoker's bag! The cigarette smell is terrible. The bag is very nice. I thought about just letting it sit out in a good rain storm or two...but thought about possibly having it dry cleaned. There were some good ideas in here.

Oh man that had me laugh out loud. Brilliant I tell you.

I do this without my wife knowing. I wont admit to it if she ever stumbles across this post. Fortunately our identity is anonymous. My wife has a steamer she uses on clothes. This thing is industrial it has a tank a long hose with a rack a the perfect attachment for cleaning a golf bag. I mix up a spray bottle with oxi clean detergent/water. I spray the bag lightly with the oxie clean mixture then I apply the hot steamer. It has the white parts on the bag white again and then I rinse it off and let it dry. Then I spray lightly with scotch guard protectant. Looks great I do it about once a year.

I went to the Dollar Tree yesterday and got a bottle of "pre wash" spray, sprayed my whole Mizuno bag, then I mixed up a spray bottle with laundry detergent and water and sprayed it with that. By night last night, there was a darkish black wet spot underneath where the bag was sitting in my laundry room. Just nasty stuff. Then today I went to the spray car wash and went at it. I don't know at this point what the results are but the bag is drying in my warm porch (probably two days for it to dry in there, it's hot around here these days).

I will report back...

In the meantime, I pre-treated a different Nike stand bag I got for free that had crap on it. We'll see..

Eh, the bag (so far) is a good bit cleaner, but I'll be damned if cigarette smoke saturated anything isn't among the most vile, violated fabric you're going to come in contact with. A smoker's house, a smoker's car...a smoker's golf bag. Ish.

I don't know if I'm going to get the smell out totally - or maybe it'll take a couple tries - but at least the bag is a good bit cleaner.

Check with a car detailing center. They have cleaners specific for removing cigarette smoke from automobile upholstery it's my guess that it would work on a golf bag. I would also suggest Febreze that stuff works wonders.
