Why do guys say the G25 driver and fairways are high spin?

Recommended Posts

It's a comparative statement. The G25, for every single player I have fit, including myself, creates a higher level of spin than the SLDR. Doesn't make it a bad driver, and for a lot of people it might be a better all around driver.

Call it whatever you want.

Titleist TSR2 15* & 21* w/ GD UB-7,8 (S)

Titleist T200/150 5-PW w/ Steelfiber i110 (S)

The G25 isn't high spin, but it is noticeably higher spinning and launching than some true low spin drivers.

I compared the G25 against a bunch of my drivers at a demo day last summer. The demo was at a range where you could see the full flight of the ball, there was a strong face on wind , so spin was noticeable.

A 9 degree G25 with the stock TFC shaft launched higher than a 10.5 XL Classic, a 10.5 Answer and a 10.5 F12 LS. Into the wind the G25 ballooned and was easily the shortest.

I switched the shaft to an Ahina and the flight was much better but still slightly shorter than the F12 and XL. I would gladly trade off those few yards for the extra forgiveness of the G25 though.

The $400+ new price tag of a G25/Ahina combo is a little hard to swallow . Maybe I'll ho a used G25 when prices drop.

I own the 913D2, G25, Anser, and XL Custom, each in 10.5. I can play any of them no problem and they are all in the same ballpark for distance.

One thing I have noticed with the G25 is I can fire hard and it doesn't go left very often. I have a bit of a hold off move, so at first, I hit some high spinners with the G25. Once I trusted that it wasn't going to go left and put a good honest swing on it, the flight leveled out and it bored into the wind better. To the point I was using it in the "-" 10 degree setting and went back up to the 10.5º setting. My G20 was on the low end of spin at 2200 and the G25 I have no idea what it is, but the control is great and the distance is nothing to sneeze at. The "high spin head" thing has mostly been in relation to the Anser, which is lower spin. The Ping heads have been pretty low spin for a while now.

Maybe the stock shaft may spin a little bit more... but as a poster put up earlier.

The Ahina + G25 is great. I have the 3rd generation W shaft from Mitsubishi at 77g, and it is an absolute bomber... I've tried the SLDR and Big Bertha too on Trackman...

I don't think this driver will get out of my bag for years to come. I've only owned two drivers since I started playing anyway.

It was too low spin for me, 1500 spin when balls teed real high, had to let her go

I have three G25 drivers, 9.5* and 10.5*, but of those three drivers, all with regular shafts, there is only one shaft that really works for me. They are all supposed to be the same, no? But, they are not. Two of the shafts frequency on the very soft side, and oval. The shaft that works for me frequencies firmer, and straighter.

With the shaft that works great for me, I hit the ball hard and straight. I don't need spin numbers to tell me how good the driver is, because I have tried it against a couple of Titleist drivers, 910 D2 and 913 D2, with different shafts. The Ping combo goes - straight and penetrating.

But, more important than spin numbers, the driver goes straight for me most of the time. I really don't care what the spin numbers might say, because I have a driver that gives me confidence and enables me to get off the tee to the best of my ability.

Oh, btw, I have a Titleist 910 D2 10.5* driver with a stiff shaft at 46" that goes pretty straight and long as well. Most would say that 46" is too long; but that driver has also given me plenty of great driving rounds.

Play what works.

  • 1 year later...

I think the G25 series is the best driver for me thusfar. I bought and tried the 8.5, the 9.5 and the 12. I used 5 different shafts and the G25 12* was very much a high spinning head-- I lost a lot of distance with that one. I ended up keeping and playing a 9.5 set at neutral with a Diamana Ahina 70 stiff. This pairing for me gives the best accuracy, distance and forgiveness. I am buying a 10.5 to complete my personal testing, but so far the 9.5 is just ideal for me, so I doubt the 10.5 will beat it. Just my 02
