Who would try a 15 in. cup?

I would enjoy it. If anything, it'll speed up rounds because anything inside of 6 feet should be nearly impossible to miss. I don't think it will have that big of impact on scores though. A current hole has what, 2.125 inches on either side of center? A 15 inch hole will be 7.5 on either side, so just over 5 inches more "play" on any given side. I see a lot of people miss most of their longer putts by more than 5 inches either short or wide.
that may be true but with the larger holes you can take a more direct line to the center of the cup with greater speed so it could help. I think it would be fun to try.

We do realize no one is trying to change the size of a regulation hole, right? The 15" hole is for some tournaments, some courses, some people, some times. It will never replace the hole we all use now. I'd love to see a course, once in awhile, set up with a 15" hole. It would be fun to play. I think it would improve alot of serious golfers chipping and putting. Most people get so nervous chipping and putting to that tiny hole knowing they have to get it super close to 1 putt, that the 15" hole would actually loosen them up and chipping and pitching would improve on a regular course too.

For those people that say it wouldn't speed up the game, I'm saying it would. I work at a course and watch the fiasco on the greens all day long. Chips and pitches, and marks, and lining up, missing, marking, lining up again, ......for christ sakes this goes on for each guy. The game would be easier, putting would be easier, more putts made, more chips made, more one putts....it HAS to speed up a round, period.

REMEMBER.....it is NOT replacing the standard hole. It would be a blast to play once in awhile. For the purists......your "real" handicap is safe.

We have a local 6 hole kiddie course that has both sized holes on the green. I can tell you that when playing the larger holes, there is no satisfaction in sinking a long putt. It would be like playing a pick-up basketball game with 8' rims. You might have the game of your life but will you really get as much enjoyment from it knowing you made the game easier?

Lots of Knee-jerk reactions to posts here, and anything to do with tee it forward. These changes are not replacements just alternatives to allow more golfers enjoyment. I think the big cups would be fun for a round or two, but ultimately I would still want to play traditional holes. Alternately-a round with the kids, or coworkers who just want to get out of the office and do something different, I could see where the 15" holes make for a fun afternoon.

I have yet to really witness during my rounds this season anyone whose score would greatly improve with the use of one of these cups. I just see way too many lost shots before getting on the green. While putting is still difficult, it has a more compact stroke that is at least easier for most to do OK than the full swing. And the player *usually* doesn't hit their ball off the green into the woods when putting and has to search for it.

 • 2 weeks later...

I finally found a course that had these 15inch cups and to be honest I thought it was great. Each green had 2 pins (one 15inch cup, one traditional) and I didn't mind the double pin setup at all. IMO, I think all the 15inch cup does it make hacks putt more like pros -- meaning 2 putts on almost every hole and the chance to sink a few. I hit a few longer putts at the giant hole and surprisingly I missed a few, so it's not a complete joke.

Let's be honest, what average (20+ handicap) has the time in their schedule to practice putting a few hours a week in order to have a legitimate shot at sinking 15-20 footers, or eliminate 3 putting.

As far as growing the game, I don't see how a 15inch cup is any different than starting at closer tees. As your game progresses, you can move to the traditional cup. Just as you would progressively move back tees.

Count me in as a fan.

Seriously?

Absolutely not.....

Yea, lets treat symptoms ;)

It makes for bad medicine but it'll be "good for the game"

Yea, ok ;)

Have a nice week-end :)

15" sounds too easy. But if you time how long it takes for a foursome or fivesome to finish putting on just about any hole, it is easy to see how much time is spent on short putts. I would support a study or testing to determine a hole size that significantly shortens that time without being too easy. From reading this thread it seems around 8 inches might work.

It is just excruciating to stand on a green on a hot summer day while everyone misses putts, marks, waits, etc. What is the average first putt in your group? 30 feet? How many of those wind up outside of 2 feet requiring more time to prepare the next putt? Likely at least half. So if there are 6 putts requiring study, each taking a minute (including time for marking, cleaning the ball, brushing off the line, plumb bobbing, lining up the ball's aim line with the expected path, etc.), cut that in half and you save almost an hour per round.

Speaking of slow play, I am sure at least two of the players in my group spend more time studying putts in one round then they did studying for their college finals.

I say make the 15" holes mandatory for all scrambles. We might knock an hour off of these 5-6 hour events and I can get my weekend round of golf in.

I've seen some scrambles set up where there are automatic 2-putts. So give the first a shot and if you miss it, the next one is good. I don't remember playing in one, but I can only assume it would take some time off the round although I think most of the spent in scrambles is spent looking for the balls to pick up and move to the one you can actually find.

Agreed, The two putt max fixes the issue. No need to screw around with a 15"cup.

Slower, true rolling greens and more receptive pin placements could make putting easier as well without having to change the cups.
