Phoenix Area - Establish Handicap

Hi guys,

I'm in the Phoenix area and jump around quite a bit on the courses I play. During peak season its mostly the city courses though, primarily Aguila or Maryvale. Next winter I'm going to rejoin the city card and probably hit Papago as well. Summertime I roam more, I like Vista Verde. Lookout mountain is close to home. Etc.

I want to establish an official handicap now and would like to play some tournament golf again (haven't played any since I was in high school, 15 years ago now).

If you were in my shoes, what would you do? I see mens clubs at Cave Creek (close to me), Aguila, and Maryvale. I suspect there is also one at Papago. There's also this Golf Channel tournament thing that someone I was paired with mentioned to me.

http://www.gcamtour.com/

Looks like they play a lot of upper tier courses.

I think I'm overloaded with options. Suggestions?

Yeah, I just stumbled across that nsmga.com group. Only turnoff was the non-GHIN handicap. Are those golfhub tournaments pretty active? Good turnouts or small groups?

Tournaments are very active. 3 flights, plus skins and prize fund. Seems theres always a ringer in every flight, but they're fun nevertheless. Locations / courses center around the East Valley.

NSMGA still has me intrigued. Tournament greens fees seem pretty damn competitive and some courses on their list are Private. I think NSMGA coupled with GolfHub for the true GHIN handicap is a pretty solid way to go.

Yes.

This is exactly what I have Golfhub and play in NSMGA. So I have a GHIN to play in any event nationwide, Get Golhhub events at a discount and play nsmga weekly.

Sorry, I don't just want a handicap. I also want to play some tournament golf. Trying to fulfill both wants with one fee.

nsmga fees are for the league....so can't avoid those. Do Golfhub...it will be your best choice.

You can post your NSMGA rounds in the GHIN system right? Are your NSMGA scores counted as tournament rounds in the GHIN system? (I haven't worked with handicaps for a while but I seem to recall tournament rounds being weighted, could be mistaken though). I'm honestly intrigued, I think that the golfhub or Southwest Desert Tour Club for the GHIN cap coupled with NSMGA may be the way to go. Those NSMGA events look really fun. And they play some great golf courses.

You can tell there's real tournament golf being played there too if you look at the results. Plenty of blowup rounds. I actually like that they don't use the desert rule. That's a big hazard out here.

I have mine through Lookout Mountain. It's like $75 / year but you get a free round of golf with it. They have some tournaments throughout the year.

Thanks for the advise guys. I just signed up for the NSMGA. Looking forward to playing some tournament events.

One_Putt, I'm going to be the same way. I'm just starting to play again after several years of not playing at all. I feel like I could go out and shoot somewhere between a 78 and 100 on any given day. Could get interesting.
