I have a question about Manuel’s thoughts on grip. I have his book and he advocates for the left hand more of the palm on the shaft because if you have it more in the fingers then at impact the face will be distorted. He goes on to say that compensations will be required for a grip (lead hand more in the fingers).

this is completely contradictory to what you see current pros doing and instructors like Malaska advocate for. So what’s correct?

im currently in the process of weakening my grip. I believe I’ve always had a relatively strong grip but it’s only gotten stronger and with that I’ve made some damaging compensations. I’ve always had a pretty menacing pull hook..

I really like MDLT’s methods, but instructors today have gone the opposite direction in terms of grip.. was he just wrong on this?

Manuel wisely points out that not all hands are built alike. Please see time 22:00 to 28:50

I’ve seen that video before but doesn’t hurt to watch it again. He is so precise with his words.

i plan on going to Top Golf tomorrow. we’ll see how my new grip holds up. Fingers crossed.

No...ball flight is usually left to right, or the occasional pull left.

Please carefully read "Coming Over the Top" pages 107 to 110. Then, perform the Practice Exercise on pages 109 to 110 as directed.

Needless to say, the correct grip, stance, posture and alignment is a prerequisite to performing this Practice Exercise.

Please keep us posted on your progress.

Do your bad shots only curve to the right, or do they start out to the right and then curve farther right?

I'm curious, because start right curve righter is my biggest problem  -- intermixed with the occasional snap hook (when there is water or OB on the left of course).

They go left to right, for the most part. Once in a while they go right/right...and that ain't right, lol.

My guess is you are not starting the DS with your arms, you are starting with your shoulders.  Practice with your right foot pulled back and feel like your shoulders stay closed (keep your back pointing at the target as long as possible)  and your arms and club swing past the body.

I suspect you are right, though it certainly doesn't feel that way. I have always had a bit of a problem keeping my back to the target on the DS.

I am no swing instructor, I don't want to screw you up.  🙂 I should probably keep my mouth shut now.  My only advice if you are working on the MDLT swing, is stick with that swing and that swing only, don't mix and match.  Recipe for disaster.  Good luck to you!!

Perhaps they are all right.  Manny taught a grip that was compatible with the swing he taught.  Others teaching other grips may have been doing the same

Prodigal golfer returning. I accidentally got completely away from MDLT and today started trying to go back to the method. Here's a video of my attempt. This bucket of balls went pretty well! Still trying to let my body react more to the swing rather than trying to produce the swing with my body. It's an uphill battle to change a life-long habit!

More than one way to skin a cat. Gotcha. Thanks Steve 🙏🏻

A stronger grip is very compatible with a swing that has active body rotation. Think of how DJ or a young Duval turn through the shot. Arm swinging works well with a neutral grip in my opinion.  Personally the way MDLT describes the grip is neutral, not weak. JMO.

Ya, bought a used like new hardcover book quite some years ago.  Got to the GRIP.  Had no idea what he was talking about, couldn't comprehend for the life of me.  Book went onto the shelf.

Fast forward to recent posts now.  Saw comments on the GRIP.  Thought I'd take a look at the grip part of the book again.  Nope, still don't comprehend.  Book back on shelf and goodbye MDLT method.

More I watch this guy the more I love it.  Lol.  He’s basically showing how I grip and swing a club.   Just watched the grip explained, it’s exactly me. This whole super strong left hand and right  hand underneath business that is popular requires so much manipulation on the down swing  to keep the toe from rolling , it’s crazy.  I never could  see how that was beneficial to anyone ? ( the palm up right hand and palm down left ). To have that grip be square to the intended ball path would  be to have a path that exits so hard low and left that a you’d hit your left ankle.

The grip works perfectly with the swing he teaches. If you are a handle dragging body turner then it will be a disaster.  Parts gotta match.

Not so sure it can’t be taught by reading his book but anything is better with an instructor.

I believe there are very few competent instructors, so a player may be best served by learning from a book. Either with lessons from an instructor,  or from a book, there is no reason teaching-learning good effective technique should ever be a time consuming or complicated thing. The teaching-learning component can be done in a few minutes; it is the practicing which takes hundreds to thousands of hours.
