MACGREGOR VIP VFOIL 1025c IRONS BEST EVER?

Packnchew

Recommended Posts

I have a set of the m's. One of my favorite oldschool irons. Beautiful shape and stamping. Frankly I like them better than the c's.
Each to his own though. I don't mean to rain on your parade.
Performance wise the c's are not particularly forgiving as we have come to expect a cb to be.However the design of the long irons in the m's was ahead of their time. Very forgiving with a higher launch than other bladed irons of that time.
If you read up on them no expense was spared by Macgregor to build the best set of blades they possibly could.
To properly add to your thread I would say some of my all time fav's (I will stick to past older models) are:
Maxfli A10 tours
TM 300
Mizuno tn87
Ping i5.
I am a collector and have tons of irons so I had better stop there. :taunt:

One word answer: YES

The 1025 IS the best iron ever. Loved them. I had a combo set of the 1025C and 1025M. Fabulous irons.

I leaned my game with the vfoils. I got them for cheap from a club pro I worked for. They were just lying in storage. Definitely pushed me to practice and really learn about the swing. I couldn't hit then at first and contemplated giving them back! I've moved on to more forgiving irons but I still have the vfoils in my attic and I fantasize about busting them out every once in awhile

Definitely prefer the 1025M's over the C's. The M's are great looking and performing irons.

Had a set of CM's and liked them. Blade length is longer than your typical forging. The C's have a bottom flange extension that adds weight low and back behind the face. Extended flange is visible from the playing position on the long irons. Still have a M 7-iron with DG S300 laying around (near mint condition). Will ship it to someone for the cost of shipping if anyone wants a nice practice blade.

I had a set of the 1025 CMs back in the day. Thought the musclebacks were prettier, but wanted the forgiveness of the cavity backs in the longer irons. Probably could have played the musclebacks through the whole set, as I didn't find the cavity backs that forgiving. Great looking sticks, some of the prettiest I have ever seen.

They certainly were pretty irons, the gold accents were top notch. Does anyone know if Don White had anything to do with them? I always wondered if they were part of the Don White Era! That would just push them even further over the top. I should amend my Original post however. I meant to say I think the Macgregor VIP VFOIL 1025's are the most estetically pleasing iron sets out there. Something about those irons have always jumped out to me.

My dad still games 1025Cs but I prefer the 1025Ms. I was fortunate to acquire a set of the tour heads and put them in play last spring...amazing irons. Own four 77s on Royal Cromer, Thetford, St Andrews Eden Course, and Sunningdale New Course.

Yes the VIP V-foil 1025m are the one's I am refering to as well.
The main input for the design came from Jose Maria Olazabel. (spelling?)

I just replaced mine this year. Thinking I might just find another set that is in good shape and sell the Rocketbladez. Learned the game with those irons and loved them every step of the way. Faces are just wore out now...

The blades are beautiful. I have the CM set, the offset on the cavity clubs is too great, and I don't think the set flows together too well IMO.

They can't kick my Hogan Apex Edge Pros out of the bag though. Best iron ever.. For me at least..
Exactly my thoughts. I tried 1025's twice and they looked great in the bag, looked awful behind the ball ... kept playing my Hogan Edge Pros.

 • 1 year later...

I have them in my bag (second year straight) and had a set prior to my current set, many years ago (at that time I had the Ms).

The C's are my favorite irons...EVER. Best forgings EVER. Some of the prettiest of all time as well.

And as it so happens, I walked into Goodwill yesterday and got a set of M's for $2.99 a club, 3 through PW. Decent shape as they were.

I made a mistake on the other post you have the ones with the thick flange. The ones I had were a combo set. The flange is a little thick for me but they are still outstanding clubs

The 1025m is IMHO the best looking Macgregor iron ever (and probably the best overall in playability/workability).

1025c is very nice as well, a little more forgiving, Play the M's and people notice them.

Close 2nd in looks is the VINTAGE Mac Colokrom w/ brass face.  I just sold a set and already wish i kept them just to look at.

Back in 2k MacGregor built me a custom set of MB's 2-LW.  They also built a 1025CM 18' 2 iron in case I wanted some relief from the MB 2i.  It's a nicely designed club.  All of them are still in my golf club closet.  They are outstanding irons, but so are Titleist 670MBs where followed.  Only 20 guys on tour played them.  Then there's my current Titleist 620 MBs & CBs, which are outstanding by any standard.  A well struck long iron makes me tingle.

The best is the 1025 combo set...I had a set that I sold like an IDIOT...great clubs.  Best of both worlds.

I had some 1025CM's and they were nice, but the real beauties were the M's.  The C's had a fair bit of offset and the muscle could be seen out the backside of the club when in the playing position.

I looked for years for a set, finally found 3-PW M’s on the bay in great shape. I love to look at them. I’ve played a few rounds with them, but only on occasion for fun.

I played the M’s for 10 years. Honestly as close to a perfect blade as I have ever hit. Solid, consistent, forgiving and the perfect sole shape and grind

MacGregor had a custom order program for these irons where they offered a few different sole grinds.  You don't find many companies offering such options these days.

I have a set of the M's, 2 of C's, CM's, pcb's, and some older vintage stuff (It's a sickness).  The M's are my favorite because they look so damn good and everybody notices them.  I've been playing some Cobra AMP Cell irons but i think i'm going to put the M's back in my bag.  I hit the Cobra's better on the range, but i've never hit any clubs better than the 1025 M's ON THE COURSE.  Must be a mental thing with me.
