Dobson Ranch in Phoenix

Hey guys,

 

I am playing with my buddy this weekend at Dobson Ranch "his home course".. he lives about 5 minutes from there.

 

I however, have never played it before. We always go elsewhere cuz he plays it during the week and likes to venture out.

 

We play for a buck a hole, buck for front 9 score, back 9, and all 18. Just to make it interesting. You'd be amazed how much a dollar will mess up your putting stroke.

 

Anyway, those that have played the course before and often.. any tips on holes or tricks you can think off the top of your head?

 

I wanna be able to steal a good $10 from him and make him buy me a round or two afterward.

Dobson is a great old layout. The trick to it is not to drive it through the fairways on 3,5,6, 13, 15 and 16. Get a good yardage from the tee to setup your approach. The trees out there are old and big and it is easy to make a big number if you aren't smart off the tee.

Ya he said its a great course to walk. We are getting out early, so I think we do plan to walk.

Great course, rohlio pretty much nailed it. Greens can have a deceptive amount of break to them too, Grain really seems to pull them as the putts slow down.

If you're a longer hitter, many of the dog legs can be cut off though. If not, play to the opposite side that the hole bends so you aren't blocked by the trees(dogleg left, play right).

I am strong until you throw trees in the equation. No problem carrying 270 with my driver.. mentally, not quite there.

That too is good advice regarding the doglegs. I wonder if i'll be laying up a lot so I dont drive through the fairways.

I've heard the course is in great shape too.

Stay below the hole. Being out of position on some of those greens make two-putting a chore. Also, don't be afraid to aim at the fairway bunker on 8. Visually intimidating tee shot but if you're even average length you can aim at that bunker, go through it, and have a reasonable second shot, and if you cut it a little off the tee you're perfect.

Also just got an email.... all the bunkers surrounding the green on 12 are to be played as GUR. I think they are redoing them starting today.

Oh that kinda stinks... but only one hole.

So will the drop are be on the green? ^_^

[/quote]Good move. The bunkers at Dobson are what you would expect at a muni, some much better than others, but the bunkers on 12 are a disaster.

Yes
Those bunkers were brutal because the sand was rock hard and if you bladed/thinned the ball coming out of them the entire green outside the bunkers is surrounded by that little stream/lake

Played there yesterday and today, par 3 12th hole bunkers are out of play with a drop zone just off the left side of the green. Both front bunker raised lips have been contoured down even with the putting surface , back bunkers are being taken out of play and growing the grass to hold a long shot from getting wet..construction will take maybe one more month or so ....they have a temp green in front for weekday play during the construction period....hit it straight , stay below the pins and doby is a walk in the park...haha.....have fun.

#12 hole construction is complete ....looks good played there yesterday course is in great shape.

Numbers 8 and 11 kill me every time. Can never hit safe on either hole and the green on 11 is nasty.

Ideally you want to be as far left on both holes for a better approach into the green. The bunkers short and right are death.

I am happy with a couple bogeys on those holes.
