Played the Valley Course this afternoon after another day of rain. The Valley is quite wet with cart path only on several holes. Greens are soft but very playable. The PNGA had their Mid Amateur final this morning so tough pins and quick greens. Lots of fun! Weather is supposed to improve for the weekend. good luck on your rounds. I am off for the long weekend.

Olympic View is still a great course, 30 mins from sooke. As well with both Bear Mountain courses and highland pacific also 20-30 mins away.

SC is one of my favourite courses...maybe one of the best in BC.

Painter's Lodge usually has some room rate specials before the height of the salmon season.

Just back from the Island. Played Olympic View on Thursday and it was in OK shape. Pretty baked. Played Cordova today, outstanding conditions! fairways were like beautiful emerald green carpet.

I'm 67 with sciatica and I walk Olympic View 4 days a week. There are courtesy carts after #9 to take you to the club house and # 10 tee box. The hard walk is from 17 green to 18 tee. It's a puffer but doable.

A little off the Victoria topic but any recommendations for courses in the Nanaimo area. Looking at getting in 3 rounds.

Nanaimo Golf Club allows greens fees. 30 minutes north of Nanaimo is Parkesville- Qualicum Beach with several good golf courses including Morningstar, Pheasant Glen and closer to Nanaimo, Fairwinds. Sorry for the late reply, I haven't been keeping up.

I just finished playing with two guys from Morningstar who advised of some turmoil at the golf club. Apparently maintenance isn't up to standard and the club house is virtually closed. Maybe bypass Morningstar until you can check further.

I have been traveling to Vancouver Island for the past 3 years on Spring Break (end of March) It has hit and miss with the weather but I generally walk rain or shine. I feel Highland Pacific had the most views, great drainage and not overly busy on a weekday afternoon. Cordova Bay was a little more busy and soggy but still a great track. Overall, VI is a Canadian Paradise for golf. Hope that helps

Even though my club has a reciprocal with Royal Colwood I would rather pay to play at Highland Pacific.

Wow, that's pretty high praise for Highland Pacific Golfnuck. They have some real nice flyover videos on their website, is this course walkable? It looks like it has some good elevation changes, and you would probably get a good workout there.

 

BurritosForBrekfast, Bear Mountain just up the street from Highland Pacific is also very hard to beat. The original mountain course will beat you up a little the first time you play it with some blind shots, but the Valley course is a little easier without the blind shots and is a great course.

I believe so. I've heard that lots of of people just hop on the private Victoria Golf Club on Xmas day and New Years when they are closed to play a round for free. No flags though. Just park near any of the holes there and just hop on. I believe it's only those 2 days of the year where they allow this to happen, and they don't call the cops or whatever. I have just heard this from a handful of people, but people do the same here in Vancouver on New Years Day.

bb123 - yes it is a very hilly course and the distance between the green to the next tee can be quite a walk on some of the holes.

 

Pacific Hole 5 - the drive from the back tee box is amazing. Looks very narrow thru a sliver of space between some tall trees but the fairway beyond is very generous.

 

Highland Hole 4 (my picture) - the drive from the back tee box is straight over the full length of the pond. Seems like it requires a long drive but you can go to the left and the carry is not bad.

 

I used to play at Bear Mountain annually but when they increased their rates to $249 for the Mountain Course to me the value is just not there.
