So Why Don't Tour Players Use Colored Golf Balls?

Just wondering why this hasn't caught on on major men's tours? Granted, only Srixon makes a tour level colored ball (possibly Volvik) at present, but hardly any pros use them. Why? OK, so pros are creatures of habit, and probably grew up playing traditional white golf balls, but you'd figure a few players would put them in play. Color is A-OK in other parts of the game, but for golf balls it's like its taboo on tour. Brightly colored clothes? No problem. White/colored drivers, fairways, putters, golf shafts? Sure. But a colored golf ball. No way! This seems odd to me.

What's your theory on this?

Impossible to read their minds, but I suspect that the traditional white golf ball is the look they have been ingrained with, and as an 25 round/year 18 HCP I also feel the same way. I have played bright yellow balls in the fall to help me find them in the leaves, but that is a rare exception. Keep in mind that the pro's have spotters to find their errant shots and the rest of us do not.

You may have noticed that Volvik came out with a "White Ball" since it is what most golfers want.

Since the vast majority of PGA tour players play either the ProV1 or the ProV1x (which has no colored option), perhaps that the answer.

Also, I believe most people play a colored ball because it provides better optics and is easier to find. However, is that a concern for a pro? A PGA player has his caddie, tournament volunteers, officals, and fans all tracking his shots. Quite different than us, who are lucky if our playing partners see where our ball landed.

I think this gets at the heart of it. The ball most have decided to use is only offered in white and the utility that most of us that choose yellow embrace (easier to see in flight and then find) is not required when you have galleries and forecaddies to locate your ball.

FWIW, there are quite a few LPGA players that play colored balls.

I think it has to do with the fact that the #1 ball on tour doesn't come in any other colors. That being said, I doubt many pros would change to a colored ball even if it did come in something other than white.

Pro Golfers are very conservative

I believe it was David Feherty that said politically they are just to the right of Adolf Hitler.
[/quote]

So wouldn't that make them still very left wing as Hitler was a Socialist?

Sorry, but I cannot help it. Mussolini, the founder of Facism, was a Radical Socialist. Facists and Nazis are mistakenly portrayed as right-wing. Radical right wingers? Anarchists.

I'll shut up now.

I would play orange ProV1s in a second if I could. Until then, it is orange Srixon Z-Star XVs from Japan for me. Hooray for Rakuten!
