60* lob wedge........7 degree vs 11 degree bounce?

Recommended Posts

I'm playing golf again after a several year layoff. I haven't concentrated on my short game in many years and was working on Remax Long Drive qualifiers before quitting so I focused solely on driving for quite some time.

I'm going to purchase some new equipment and a 60* lob wedge is part of the plan. When considering two wedges that are exactly the same specs--same model, same loft...... except for the bounce which 60* wedge bounce would you find to be the most versatile between 7* and 11*?

Depends what your intent of use for the 60 degree is.

There are many good golfers here so take my words with a grain of salt.....

I have a 60* Lob wedge with 7* of bounce. I use this club often for tight lies around the green, hard bunkers and for dangerous situations where I need to really open the face to get a high trajectory.

I wouldnt use the low bounce for soft bunkers and long roughs. To much digging and the high loft = disaster.

any ways, you need to figure out what your shot type with that degree of loft and what you will mainly use the club for. I dont take full swings with my 60 as I use it primarily for shot control around the green. Im not much of a bump and runner, im rather a flyer and stick. So this clubs works well for me.

As for versatility, I have mix setup so I have versatility. 56* SW with 11* bounce and the 60* with 7* bounce.

The SW I will use in the longer rough, the softer sand the full shots to get spin etc. The bounce is a great life saver in those situations.

So again depends on your natural shot type and your intent to use the club.

What he said. :)

I use a 60/07 and a 56/11 also. Two different bounce configurations in my opinion is the way to go.

I use my 60-04 from 100 yards and in for everything, including the beach. If I am inside 100 yards no other club leaves my bag until its my putter's turn. Different strokes I guess.

I don't see any reason why you would need or want a high bounce lob wedge.

1) Wedges, especially your lob wedge, are finesse shots, not full swings, a 3/4 swing at most. You're not going to be "digging" or anything of the sort.

2) If you plan to use it for "tight lies" and other such challenging shots, bounce will only hurt you by making it harder to keep the wedge playable when changing the face angle.

Get yourself a lob wedge with as low bounce as possible. If you're hitting it fat, you don't need more bounce, you need better contact.

I'm in the UK and we do get rain, and a lot of it some winters (like last). I use a 60* lob wedge for a lot of shots around the green and out of bunkers, and my basic concern is that the club is reliable and doesn't dig. So I go with 10* bounce. As long as the leading edge gets nicely under the ball I don't see a problem and I like the extra bounce. Whether I'll need less bounce when the courses are hard and parched I don't know - haven't experienced that yet. But I have a few 60* wedges anyway including a 6* bounce, so I have the possibility to switch.

Does it have to be "either-or"?

And anyway, why 7* or 11*? There are quite a few good wedges at 8*, 9* and 10*. And the ATV grind which is very versatile.

Agree with others... best to have bounce options in your set. I go with 60/07. Mostly I got it for harder and wet sand (both frequent here) but I'm using for other shots also.

My real money club and frequent use club though is my 56/11, that I recently had bent to 55/10 (and like better after the change). I'm on the "Wet Coast" so even though I'm more of a sweeper, I wouldn't want to go lower than 7 degrees for a lob.

That is another option for you, to have the wedge bent a degree or so to better fit your distance gaps and bounce preference. Or simply if you can't get your hands easily on a stock one that fits your preference. One degree stronger = 1 degree less bounce and vice versa.

Why only 7 or 11? I'm partial to Japanese forgings and in this particular wedge those are the bounce options. I have a higher bounce sand wedge already in the bag so I am going to go with the 60/7. I just wanted to get thoughts on the lob wedge bounce. I played to a 4 handicap as a teenage high school golf captain and was a good wedge player. But that was in the late 1980's. I'm 44 now and have stayed away from golf for a while. When I was a good player I don't recall having as many bounce options as we do today.

There's nothing wrong with a high bounce lob wedge, if you use it for what it's intended. Either too much or too little bounce can kill you with a high lofted club. I've tried both and found bounce to be my friend.

With all the different grinds we have from different manufacturers right now, is it even relevant to talk about bounce as a pure number? Wedges have to be tested outdoors in real conditions (tight lies, rough, sand etc.), otherwise you have no idea if they will suit your game and home conditions at all.

I play a 60 with 4* bounce , pretty much anything 70 yards and in this is my club. There are a lot of hard pan areas around the greens where I play and if I'm going to try and get under the ball, that extra bounce is only going to get in the way, if I'm hitting it from 60 yards out, I'm hitting down on the ball and I'm not sure the bounce will come into play as much.

And see, I personally lay the sod over that shot without bounce. So to each his own.

bounce is the enemy of a "feel" shot .....for me anyway...a high bounce wedge interacts with the turf terribly...I play Bermuda rough courses mostly...try getting 12 degrees of bounce through thick Bermuda....you may be able to if your used to it, but I promised its easier with 4....on a 60 you may want some more bounce...I don't play a 60 but in my 56 its 4 and also my 49....
