I just got these Sunfish premium leather covers in tonight. They look and feel very nice, but I’m a little disappointed in how little padding is on the inside. They are very thin and seem to offer minimal protection. For $109 I thought they would be more plush on the inside. I’ll give them a try and see how they turn out.

Trouble not....I've had the same head covers (really, the same, exactly) for almost three years and mine have worn beautifully. They're broken in and go on and off easily. Mine look great and there are no issues with wear or protection. They're almost better with that lack of padding....that way they can't be mistaken for the vinyl that lots of makers like to sneak in on you. These are real old-school style and they look it. I don't know how much shopping around you did but these are priced really reasonably and I found the workmanship and materials as good as any, in spite of the lack of padding that you noted. Great choice...enjoy them!

I can't really imagine that a substantial leather "sock" covering the clubhead would need any padding at all, other than perhaps a thin lining of soft cloth to avoid scratches. A golf club is built to withstand thousands of impacts with the ground and golf balls. Add to that a a couple millimeter thick cushion of sturdy leather and it ought to be able to withstand almost anything.

I understand club are built to withstand impacts with the ground or golf balls off the sole and face, but not the top of the crown. It is a pretty snug fit on my M1 driver and almost skin tight on the crown. When pulling irons from the bag you sometimes hit the underside of your woods which could result in chips or dings.

Again, they look and feel great so we’ll see how they hold up.

Thank you for your input and glad to hear they have held up so well for several years.

My new irons.

And an R580xd I found on eBay... Brand new. Yes, an 8 year old club brand new. Still had all the stickers on it.

Awesome find! Although I played an r11 briefly, 580 and r7 425 were the last TMAG drivers I really had success with....

That's interesting that they don't fit your driver too well. Mine fits very well....goes on and off very easily. That said, I don't really use it. I prefer a knit cover for my driver. Maybe it'll stretch a little over time. Best of luck with them.

I always liked superfast 2.0 v2 3 wood, it got borrowed with option to keep by my golf pro. Head was great, shaft was an actual financial loss....know many who still play r11 3, and love it.

Thanks! After another around today, I simply cannot believe how easy and fun these are the hit. Taylormade claims that these are not as easy or forgiving as the M1. I think they’re protecting their M line. These are as forgiving and maybe more so than my M2. I was going to get the Titleist AP3 and after seeing the four iron in that set I am very happy I went with the P790. Normally, I would feel like a poser, having a blade type iron in my bag. Who cares? Nobody noticed the last two days what I have in my bag anyway. We are sick group here :-)

I hit them against my M1s and they were essentially the same, except they look much better.

If I don't have them in my bag by next June it is because somehow I finally found some dicipline...

The only thing I didn't like about them was the cheap looking label they put on everything. I pulled the seam as tightly as I could and cut the offender off, then burned the rest of it with a lighter. Almost no evidence of it left. You can see the remnant on the seam of the white cover.

Cheers!

Yes, that is exactly what I did after test fitting them. Looks much nicer without that tag on it. I pulled all the stitches completely out so now you can’t even tell it was there before.

A report/review on these would be great if you're up to it. This is an interesting club to me. I don't know quite whether to love it, or dismiss it totally. It's certainly Taylormade's take on the PXG and I like the PXG quite a bit. I wonder when the rest of them will introduce similar designs without getting sued....not sayin that PXG will prevail...it's just that lawsuits are always a deterrent. I hope you like them!

(This is just a re-post of my post in Tour & Pre-release )

“So, many of you P790 owners are coming from PXG, Mizzys or something else wonderful and forged that I've not put myself into being a 10hcp. So, coming from the Ping G400/M2/Gmax world these ARE buttery soft and amazingly forgiving...first round today with steel, stock stiff, 1-flat. OMG, I can't believe how fun these are to hit on the course with a good ball (Vice Pro Soft). Found myself teeing off with my 4 iron just so I'd have another long iron into the green and scored better than I have in a long time (coming off knee surgery). Fitter talked me into stiff 105s and he was right. All I can say is that anyone who can find the ball with any GI iron can use these clubs with confidence. High, soaring shots that stay put on the green. Two thumbs up!“

For me they work exactly like my G400 irons. Same flight and distance except they feel much better...
