Replacing weights on a Scotty

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to change the weights on my Scotty but it has been very difficult to remove the originals. Even a asked some help to a Pro Shop that tried with an original Scotty tool and gave up. The original weights are stuck.

I put plenty of lubricant and left the putter for a couple of hours, no success. I used a hair dryer to heat the putter, still no luck. :swoon2:

Any other ideas how to remove those weights are be appreciatted.

A hair drier is not going to give enough heat. The weights are put in with a bit of epoxy to hold them in place. You will need a heat gun and the proper removal tool to get them out. While heating the weights you should wrap a damp cloth or paper towel around the hosel
to keep the heat from affecting the head/shaft bond.

Thanks guys!

It seems that someone used extra epoxy on mine. I'll find the heat gun. The proper removal tool from Scotty is not a problem.

If you should need enough heat to remove the weights that the integrity of the rubber sealing rings is affected you can easily find replacement o-rings at any well equiped hardware store.

As another alternative, something I've found works is to bring water to a boil in a kettle, and then pour the boiling water onto the area of the weight you are trying to loosen. It heats it enough that it will much more easily loosen the Loctite or whatever it is they use in the threads to prevent us from unscrewing them (I really don't know why this is necessary!). Anyhow, just hold the putter head with a towel since it will heat up the specific area you are pouring the water onto, and with your other hand, you can use the tool attached to a torque wrench. It does localize the heat in the area of where you are pouring the water, the only caution is to make sure you pour away from where the shaft and hosel meet so you don't have the undesired effect of loosening the epoxy holding the shaft in place. Regarding the o-ring question, if you have the actual Scotty tool, they include a couple spare o-rings.

This is good stuff because I won't heat the putter too much to damage the paint.

I'll try this and let you know. I do have the o-rings for the new weights.

You will probably have to wreck the paint to get the weights out if they won't budge due to epoxy. Epoxy won't budge by pouring boiling water on the head.

To add to the bad news, if epoxy was put in the thread, it's going to need a lot of heat to break. I recommend thick gloves good hand strength and a lot of patient persistence.

Epoxy in the thread is protected from the heat by the metal it seals. I think the same seal could have been accomplished with paper glue or white glue but people have a tendency to reach for the strongest stuff and club hobbyists normally have epoxy but not paper glue.

I can tell you that this method works. Generally all you are trying to loosen is a dab of Loctite inside the threads as opposed to a large mass of epoxy. To illustrate, here's my GoLo 3 in which I swapped out the 10g weights with 15g.

1. Inside the head, you can see a bit of the leftover Loctite (once you have unscrewed it once. For the initial unscrewing you still need a torque wrench as it will need a fair bit of force, but once loose, you can unscrew by hand the rest of the way. From there, you just want to use an x-acto knife or something to scrape however much Loctite is there out of the threads (it will make future weight swapping considerably easier).

2. In the threads on the weight itself, you will also find some of the Loctite. Same deal, just scrape the Loctite out of the threads and you won't have an issue swapping the weights.

Regarding the paint, I've done this a few times and never had any issue damaging the paint on the putter or the weight being swapped out. Again, you don't need to get it overly hot to loosen the Loctite, but for this to work, it does need to get the general area around the weight hot enough that you would want a towel or something to hold it. You also want to have it secure so your hand is pressing down holding the weight in place, so that once you start applying force, the tool doesn't pop out of the weight. Apart from that, it's easy peasy!

The boiling water technique worked! :fan_1:

First I poured boiling water and the putter didn't get hot enough. Then I just boiled water again but controlling it just below boiling point (90 to 95 degC) put the putter toe corner in the water for 2 or 3 minutes. Using gloves, I grab the putter on the left, the wrench on my right and the bloody weight came out very easy. After that, I repeated the same with the heel weight taking care that the hosel didn't get hot.

Once I removed the weights, I noticed the big amount of Loctite or whatever they used in the inside. It was easy to clean and install the new weights. Unfortunately there are a couple of scratches from the failed removal intents.

By the way, I noticed that the two 15g weights I removed are different, I attached a couple of photos of them.

With the new weights, I tried the Scotty on the carpet and I feel the difference. I couldn't be happier. Thanks so much ballana!

Glad they both came out, did you weigh the new weights you put in, they do look different?
