anyone have recommendations for private courses with junior deals (reduced initiation, dues) in NW Suburbs? Im being relocated, and looking at homes in Glen Ellen, Elmhurst, Naperville Area at the moment. My office is in Schaumburg.

Does Medinah have a junior offer?

I'm 33, and have a budget for high dues, but don't want to spend a a ton upfront (no more than $10K).

I've never applied for membership at any clubs, so take this for what it's worth. Most of the "higher end" or prestigious clubs, Medinah included, you probably cannot just call up and become a member, especially without a hefty down payment. You can certainly try, but all the talk I've ever heard is that the better clubs require big money up front, and connections. There are a few clubs that aren't as prestigious as say the Butlers, Butterfields and Chicago Highlands around the Western Suburbs that might not require initiation, Itasca comes to mind, but you probably won't get the same level of a course to go along with it. There are a few clubs that are located along or near the Des Plaines River, Oak Park Country Club, River Forest Country Club and Park Ridge Country Club, that are all on the "smaller" end but I have no idea of their costs and none of them advertise it on their websites like Itasca does. I don't know anything about those clubs though. Another course in the area you mentioned is Glen Oak. I don't know how much it costs, but it's in Glen Ellyn and isn't too far from Schaumburg. But it looks like you need to be sponsored by 2 people to get in.

I know there is a cluster of clubs on the South side that are seemingly more open to members, or at least are more proactively searching for them, but that would be a long drive from Schaumburg, or the Elmhurst/Glen Ellyn/Naperville area.

Best of luck and keep us posted if you find anything out.

I spoke to somebody last year at Royal CC of Long Grove abt a junior membership. Very aggressive offer and I really enjoyed the course the handful of times I played it.

We moved to NWI last year and looked around a bit. Similar situation, a little younger. Called and toured Olympia Fields, they wanted 50k initiation half now, the rest at 35. I thought that was a lot...we ended up going to another club which is more reasonable. I have a friend who joined a top club out east, they took the $50k initiation dropped it to 30 and rolled it over 6 yrs. still a lot. Would be much easier if you were a legacy! Then no initiation.

Just get on the websites and start emailing clubs. You'll find out a lot quicker and more accurate than anything here. I've found that there are a lot of rumors and guesses what things are on here, and many times they are way, way off from reality. I'd also say, that at least with a lot of clubs, EVERYTHING is negotiable.

Also a lot of high end clubs run Jr initiation until 35...but at that time you have to pony up the difference. Since you are 33, something to keep in mind. They may let you in now for 5-10k, but then want another 30k or more when you hit 35, if you want to stay.

Michael / goduke8 - PM me and I will give you the real low down on Olympia Fields. There hasn't been a $50K initiation fee for a long time so not sure where you got that from. For Juniors (under 35), there is a great deal with very minimal upstroke later (none depending on when you joined). I joined at 31 and will owe nothing else when I turn 35. We have a ton of members from the Western Suburbs. The facility is awesome and just went through a great bunker restoration last fall (all leading up to the 2015 US AM).

I think people should look at The Grove in Long Grove, IL. For under 40, it's $395 per month with no cart fees (pretty sure about this) for the first year. If you get between 10 and 20 guys, they will also offer a few months free (e.g., 4 to 5 months, which basically cuts your membership cost in 1/2 for the 1st year with no cart fee). Great course layout that avoids the typical back and forth you see on most courses. Happy to discuss further.
